Officials know nothing of rumored Zeta standoff on Mines Road By Nick Georgiou Laredo Morning Times Published: Saturday, July 24, 2010 5:38 PM CDT Local law enforcement was bombarded with calls from across the country Saturday asking about a report that the Zetas had taken over two ranches off Mines Road. But officials with the Laredo Police Department, Webb County Sheriff’s Department and Border Patrol said they knew nothing about such an incident, while Erik Vasys, an FBI spokesman in San Antonio, said the agency does not comment on rumors. The report, which spread like wildfire among blogs Saturday afternoon, appears to have initially been posted on a blog called Diggers Realm. The blogger wrote that he got a tip from a San Diego, Calif., minuteman named Jeff Schwilk, who said that the Zetas, former enforcers of the Gulf Cartel, had crossed into the United States and taken over two ranches off Mines Road, about 10 miles northwest of Interstate 35. Quoting Schwilk, the blogger wrote that there was a standoff between “the unknown size Zeta forces and the U.S. Border Patrol and local law enforcement on two ranches …” The blogger wrote that the story was confirmed by anonymous sources at LPD. But Investigator Jose E. Baeza, LPD spokesman, said he had not heard anything about the incident. Also, an LPD sergeant, who was on duty as a watch commander Saturday afternoon, said she had not heard anything about it either. At about 4:30 p.m., Maru De La Paz, spokeswoman for Webb County Sheriff’s Office, wrote that the report about Zetas taking over ranches in Laredo is not confirmed.

My curiosity got the better of me, and so I called the Laredo Police Department, and had a delightful chat with the acting watch commander, Sgt. Perez. Sgt. Perez informed me that I was her seventh caller about this claim since she came on duty this afternoon. She stipulated two things that blows holes in the invasion claim. 1.The location of the alleged invasion is outside of their city-limits jurisdiction, so they would not be involved, and; 2.while they would not be involved in any law enforcement response outside of their jurisdiction, they work closely with the county sheriff's office and would know if such an event is occurring. She also provided me the number of the Webb County Sheriff's Department. The deputy that answered the phone there was less amused, having also dealt with this rumor multiple times in a short amount of time. She also told me that there was no invasion and no law enforcement siege, and that deputies were continuing normal operations. Don't believe the hype. Update: The Laredo Morning Times dumps all over this false alarm as well. Update: Simple Questions For the Laredo Truthers: If there is any truth at all to this story, there will be several simple, easily discoverable facts. •What are the names and exact addresses of the ranches that were taken over? •What are the names of the ranchers and families that were displaced?

He told me the first he heard of this story was when he was contacted by the FBI. He has owned this ranch for over 30 years and has never had a problem on his ranch regarding illegal immigration or smuggling. He stated he was at his ranch over the weekend and everything was fine there and in the entire area. Well if Mr. LaRaza never "had a problem" with illegals or smugglers in 30 years, I guess he'd have no problem with Los Zetas either. Typical of the lame disinformation coming out on this story.
Thanks for that link. So this may turn out to be an internet Urban Legend? I hope that's so, but, imo, it could turn out either way. The Zetas, although they are also a sorority, are not to be taken lightly, or easily, (as were the sorority girls.)

no one is claiming the border is safe, although as one who travels it frequently on both the eastern and western sides, i can attest that it is not riddled with gruesome murders for every American who dare cross. that is nothing more than extreme paranoia and propaganda. One has to use common sense, just as you wouldnt go into south central l.a. into a hooker/drug zone at 2am with a rolex flashing 100s. this is actually about dvorck's unsourced examiner story, which has been debunked extensively over the past 2 days by those on the left and right. there are enough real border problems without making up nonsense.

He joined the Marine Corps right after high school and served 21 years as an Intelligence Specialist and Intelligence Chief in a variety of billets and locations around the world. He also served as the Security Manager for various senior commands and held a Top Secret security clearance for his entire career. He participated in the planning and conduct for both the Gulf War in 1991 and the war with Iraq in 2003. Schwilk retired in 2003 from the 1st Marine Division G-2, Camp Pendleton, where he served as the Intelligence Chief for three years. He retired as a Master Sergeant (E-8) and lives in Vista in northern San Diego County. more at link. If you do a search on his name, the guy seems like a fruitcake. In fairness to Mr. Schwilk though, most of the sites that talk about him are on the left. I doubt that a fruitcake would make it to E-8 in intelligence. The question is why would he make up a story like this? Is he still working for government intel agencies or law enforcement? Was his job to infiltrate the SDMM in order to keep an eye on them? Was he given a new mission of discrediting those who are against illegal immigration and make them look like paranoid nutcases and freaks (check out the website of him wearing female swimsuits)? It is not inconceivable that he is still working for the government. On the contrary, whether Schwilkit is one or not, it is quite likely that the government has infiltrated all of the MM organizations just like they do other groups the government considers to be enemies of the state. Is the Laredo newspaper lying for the government? While possible, I find that highly unlikely, otherwise there would be bloggers from Laredo and the surrounding areas popping up out of the woodwork in condemnation of the newspaper and LEO's. Videos and pictures of police road blocks would be showing up on youtube by now. Call me paranoid but the fact that there isn't makes me believe that this was a government setup made to discredit. To me the question is whether or not Schwilk knew he was passing on bogus information or if he received the information from some old marine buddy working within the system and trusted that he was not being played.
