While rumors of Mexican drug cartels taking over Texas ranches swirled across the internet last week, Laredo police reported that they had been deluged with calls from concerned citizens across the United States. Since then, the story has reportedly been completely debunked by those on the right and the left. The Laredo Morning Times reported that Officials know nothing of rumored Zeta standoff on Mines Road. While there is no doubt that the immigration problem needs to be addressed, don't look for the criminal federal government to do anything about it anytime soon. Both parties are satisfied with the status quo; massive unchecked illegal immigration has gone on for years and despite all the rhetoric, little if anything ever changes. Add to this the loss of American jobs, aided and abbetted by NATFTA and GATT, and the economic downturn, which has been characterized as 'the greatest recession' and even a depression. Much focus of the immigration issue is rife with emotionalism, claims of racism on both sides, and fantastic claims from all corners. Because of the relentless and dramatic coverage in the mainstream and alternative media, many Americans are scared witless at the prospect of daring to cross the 'scary' border. They imagine that as soon as they do, they are more than likely to be killed, maimed, kidnapped and robbed. While there are plenty of battles, violence and deaths taking place between the drug cartels and law enforcement, the average citizen is not in a great deal of danger if they go for a tourist visit to Mexico. Having regularly travelled to Mexico for several years, to the north in Tijuana, central Mexicali, and south to the nation's capital of Mexico City, (District Federal), I can personally attest that the world will not end once you cross the border. Haven't looked at the link but my family and I are looking foreward to our next trip to Mexico. Had a great time kicking around Jalisco, Colima for a month earlier this year. In the smaller communities there are exceptionally beautiful places, and no hint of violence. I am not talking about resorts here, this is the heartland. I would not dally in Juarez or Sinoloa, however. Nor Denver, for that matter. I guess I have driven twenty thousand miles in Mexico. Baja sur is about as safe as northern Canada. We are considering a trip to Paraguay as well. These scares keep the tourists out and the people friendly and the prices low.

Incorrect. In many cities the water is fine to drink. We have eaten from numerous street vendors and market stalls with excellent results. Have had fresh veggie drinks from the markets in Mexico - recommended. I will note that once, in a six month travel to Mexico and Central America, Sue and I got very sick in Mexico for a couple of days. The same thing happened years later in Colorado Springs from eating chicken from Safeway.

It's common to get those warnings, but they can vary from city to city. Only Ecuador's third largest city has water that's supposedly safe to drink and I'm sure generally is, but when a 5 gallon jug of filtered drinking water can be refilled/replaced for about $2, give or take, why bother? Also, if you are touring in the tropics then you run the risk of getting some stomach bug that can make you a bit miserable for a few days. It's hard to completely avoid water like when brushing your teeth (if touring then brush with bottled water). But then you get some immunity to it and it's not a big deal. In the tropics, there are also parasites that live on veggies, and unless they are carefully cleaned, consuming them can give them to you. Lettuce is one type of veggie that needs to be cleaned carefully so avoiding that in lower class places might be prudent. They are intestinal parasites, but some simple medicine can take them out if you get them. It's routine in Ecuador for buses to be stopped and the males forced to exit and show ID and be frisked, and any police that doesn't have some kind of arm with a bullet proof vest isn't any good. I've been through that a few times, and always at those places there will be M-16s present, but I don't remember seeing anyone aiming rifles at myself or other passengers. I would certainly guess that things are worse in Mexico than here, at least in that regard. THAT I've not seen anywhere in Ecuador. There is poverty here, but mostly concentrated in Ecuador's biggest city.

As a dedicated drug warrior you should be salivating over this idea of blue helmets in the streets of America just like you have embraced and supported the consequences of rest of the drug war. You know, things like LEO's murdering moms, dads, children and family pets, harassing law abiding citizens, planting drugs on the innocent in order to make themselves look good to their superiors or to hide wrong doing, eviscerating the Bill of Rights. The end justifies the means, right? All that matter is we get those drugs! We all know this is what Jesus would want!

Ecuador has a lot of beauty to it, at least in the mountains, and the beaches are great too. But it's not for everyone. It's a different culture. I think there is certainly more freedom here overall, but less conveniences. It's a bit like traveling back in time.

What's not to get? A racist oligarchy of approx. 100 blue blood Spanish families continue to rule Mexico. They live in guarded gated estates in regal splendor. They despise Indian blood Mexicans(ie. the majority of citizens in Mexico). They use some Indian blooded Mexican puppets like in groups like police military drug lords to control the others or to help off load them on us in the USA, to keep any potentially rebellious aspirations to a minimum. It's a sweet situation for the blue blood 'garchs who are way smarter than the deposed rulers of other Latin American/South American feifdom wannabes, whose fatal error was giving their mice a cookie, opening the floodgates to the mice wanting cake. The 'garchs in Mexico prefer to have their mice live in abject poverty with zero expectations of cookies or cake coming into their lives in Mexico.

Answer: based on personal experiences, the people who vacation in Mexico are cheap and they like to stay in a 5 star hotel but pay 2 star prices - they like bragging about the hotel when they return home. Staying at a 5 star hotel in Mexico is also a very practical, because in Mexico vacationers invariably goof up and get Mexican water in their mouths ( taking a shower blah, blah) and thusly, since they're going to be stuck in a hotel anyways to be close to proper plumbing, why not be "forward thinking" and book into a 5 star right from the start. I've never visited Mexico - I have no desire whatsoever - I have Mexico all around me in California, thank you very much. But I have traveled to Spain and that was a lovely holiday.

Where did you learn your Spanish you use to get around inside Mexico? Not at all. I'm Scotch - Irish, Sue is 100% French Cajun. We scream gringo. We attended a Spanish school in Antigua, Guatemala for three months 23 years ago.

WHAT!!!!! No "Stainmaster" carpet. O crap man, I ain't going back. ;) Mexico has got a lot of very real problems - something like 25,000 killed in the last few years in the damn near civil war ongoing. It is somewhat a war between the Spanish/Mex elites, who,scrapper I think, noted that a few families control much of the resources of the country. So, most of the violence is concentrated in a few places and usually involves known actors. Innocents are killed in the gunfire. Both the government and the cartels do not, usually, want to panic or hurt tourists or US nationals. Why? They remember, and we do not, the invasion of Mexico by Pershing, (1872?)and neither the government or the cartels want to irritate the US much. Possibly, the cartels fear this more than the MEXGOV because they know who the US would be shooting.

Thanks for the links. I know that the feds have issued warnings, i read all of them before going down there. They also warn of arab boogeymen with boxcutters who 'hate us fer our freedoms', lol. obviously there's more truth to the mexican danger than to the lattter i referred to. I don't blame you at all for not going down there after an experience like that. Glad you were OK. did they rob everyone too, or what? Most recently when i was there the cops were stopping large vehicles such as buses and trucks which could block the road. reports state that the drug cartels use those large vehicles to block roads. That is purportedly why they check them. My passenger car did not get stopped at the checkpoint. they waved us through.

I brush my teeth with faucet water when i am there. i don't drink it unless boiled, but use it as one ordinarily would. i have never been sick from the water. usually people boil it for use in drinking and ice.

don't blame em. I used to, not many years ago, be reluctant and scared of what might happen even going to tijuana. since then i have done things and gone places i would have never dreamed of. china, europe, mexico, . on the fly, no tour guides or planning. canadians were jackboots and detained me,.although that was more amusing than anything. the rest was all great. So, I say to each their own. everyone is free to do whatever they want to do in life, hopefully. just thought i'd share my real experience given the fact that so many posters here feel like i used to, & even moreso. I have this credo that one should be cautious, But if it's your time to go, it's your time to go. which is why one should be right with God at all times. (I won't jump out of an airplane like my wife did though. i am extremely accident prone and see no reason to directly invite death. those who know me know i am not being facetious.

Perhaps, but the couple of times that I was there, always on the West Coast, everyone warned me/us not to drink it lest we get sick. They even continued to warn us that even drinking beverages not from bottles that we could see being opened was unwise.
I'm sure you're right, but I'll never forget standing up against the tour bus in the middle of the night, way out in West-bumfuck, with uniformed troops standing there pointing automatic weapons at us after shouting at all of us to line up against the buses.
I didn't enjoy Mexico back then. Again, in Mazatlan, you literally wander three blocks behind the hotels and it's third-world squalor. You could see sewage running in little streams, 10+ people living in a 300 sq. ft. house with two rooms, etc.
