There’s an old Beatles song, “Taxman” from 1966. In it, George Harrison laments: Let me tell you how it will be; There’s one for you, nineteen for me. ‘Cause I’m the taxman, Yeah, I’m the taxman. Should five per cent appear too small, Be thankful I don’t take it all. ‘Cause I’m the taxman, Yeah, I’m the taxman. (if you drive a car, car;) - I’ll tax the street; (if you try to sit, sit;) - I’ll tax your seat; (if you get too cold, cold;) - I’ll tax the heat; (if you take a walk, walk;) - I’ll tax your feet. Now George wasn’t writing about some proposed tax rate of the future, he was accurately depicting the fact that when he wrote the song, 95% of every pound he earned went to taxes. The point here is that social programs cost money and someone has to pay for them. In the UK, in 1966, the solution was to rape and pillage the rich. In response, countless members of the upper class in the UK simply took themselves and their income off-shore, thus depriving the very funding this abominable tax rate was supposed to provide. Put in this historical context, the proposed new tax rates (post Bush tax cuts) are almost benign. However, politicians, no matter the party, have to provide benefits to their constituents in order to get (re-)elected which generally come in one of two forms: more social services provided by the government or lower taxes. Both are long-term guarantees for bankruptcy, social upheaval and the Greater Depression. And as we look at the state of affairs in the United States today, the long-term doesn’t seem all that far away. Our government’s current solution, regardless of party, is to print more money. This brings to mind a statement by Ethel Kennedy (wife of RFK) when notified by her accountant that her checking account was overdrawn: “That can’t be, I still have checks left.” In the not-too-distant future, the dollar won’t be worth the paper it’s printed on because as sure as the sun rises in the East, the day of financial reckoning is rapidly approaching. So why do we say in our opening that the United States may be the last place you want to live? First, there’s an old saying, “the bigger they are, the harder they fall” and when the U.S. does fall apart, it will be ugly and violent. Second, when 90% of our country’s money is held by the richest 5% of our citizens things are going to be horrible for the remaining 95% of us. So, how’s your Spanish? Actually, I’m being a bit facetious here: my two countries of choice to flee to would be Canada or New Zealand. Both practice fiscal restraint. Both have plenty of wide open spaces. Both have nice people. Both seem to be terror free. Do you know what country you would move to when the U.S. collapses? The point is, “Do you have an exit strategy?” Do you have 24/7 access to your assets — in this scenario they’d almost by default have to be in gold. Do you have skills that are marketable in a foreign nation? Do you have a business that you can operate remotely? Do you have an idea of where you’d go, and how you’d get there when the U.S. falls apart? Have you given this whole concept any thought at all? I think I'll stick around for the party. IMO leaving is pointless anyway. When the US crashes, it will take the rest of the world down with it. Having gold won't help anyone. .
