John McCain tried to blackmail then-Congressman J.D. Hayworth in 2005 into supporting his illegal alien amnesty legislation, by threatening to raise unfounded allegations of a relationship between the Congressman and lobbyist Jack Abramoff, records show. FYI: Weve been inundated with press requests to comment on your bosss abrahamoff [sic], sky box, etc. situation. Weve refused them. I think you should be prepared for that to change, wrote McCains chief of staff and confidant Mark Salter to a Hayworth aide on May 12, 2005 at 6:19 p.m. Salters threat included these words: As you can guess, much consternation here over your bosss quick attack on a bill weve been working on for months, in the most arduous discussions, and, we think, managed to arrive at a very good product with a broad constituency behind it, not to mention three of your boss delegation members. Obviously the attack occurred before anyone has even seen the bill. At best, it was discourteous, and we took it quite personally. Following the threat, a committee chaired by McCain launched an investigation into Abramoff and his alleged connections to members of Congress. While McCain continues in the current campaign to try to tie Abramoff to Hayworth, there was no mention of Hayworth in the committee proceedings or the final report Chairman McCain issued on the matter. Now, in desperation, McCain is doing exactly what he said he would do lie to try to win, Hayworth said. His latest ad is demonstrably false, but this is what we have come to expect from McCain. He plays mean, under handed political games of blackmail behind the scenes while he tries to convince the voters of America and Arizona he is Mr.Clean. Hayworth said he was reluctant to bring up this ugly matter during this campaign. But I have no choice, he said. At almost every campaign stop, during every interview and now in the latest lying television ads, Sen. McCain tries again and again to misrepresent the facts. While he attacks me for something he knows is false, he refuses to return the $1.1 million he took from a convicted felon who is serving a 50-year prison sentence for running a ponzi scheme. Hayworth has called for John McCain to return the bundled contributions collected by Scott Rothstein for McCains failed presidential campaign. Salters original email is below. you know back in 1986 senator McCain was a republican congressman. I'd be very surprised if he did not vote for that original immigration reform bill that provided amnesty and also failed to provide for employers being penalized for hiring illegals. and you know both McCain and Hayworth spent a lot of years in washington. Did either of them propose legislation to penalize employers for hiring illegals? I think the answer is 'no'. They both favor guest workers. Hayworth's office used to be 3 blocks from my house before his district was re-drawn and he relocated. I can't stand either one of these guys.
