When Voting Means “Nothing”
Paul Jacob

[working links at source]

Last week, nearly a million Missourians tramped off to the polls to choose candidates in the primary as well as decide ballot issues. One issue, Proposition C, the Healthcare Freedom Act, made history, if not the news.

Missouri became the first state to vote on a specific repudiation of a key element of the healthcare legislation, namely the federal government’s mandate forcing individuals to purchase medical insurance. Prop C passed with a whopping 71 percent of the vote. It wasn’t close — even though opponents of the measure, Missouri’s Hospital Association, outspent supporters by better than three to one.

At The Missouri Record blog, Patrick Tuohey argues that “the vote in Missouri will have powerful repercussions.” Obviously, when Missourians voted they wanted their votes to count, to matter, to mean something. But according to White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, the Missouri vote meant “nothing.”

Funny, you probably didn’t hear about Gibbs’s dismissive comments. You might not have even heard about the Missouri healthcare vote. For some reason, the three dinosaur television networks, ABC, CBS and NBC, didn’t even mention the vote on the following evening’s broadcast.

The Missouri vote suggests the Democrats’ healthcare legislation is none too popular. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid offered, “It’s very obvious that people have a lack of understanding of our health care reform bill.”

While the people are speaking up loudly and clearly, the response of government officials in Washington is to cover up their ears.

How strange, I honestly hadn't heard that they took a vote. The silence is ominous and telling isn't it?

Good for MO. Sounds like the Fed is now officially being notified that they can go to hell. Good.

That doesn't matter, because the networks don't matter. Thank God for the internet. The internet has cost them their influence.

They can ignore it and bury their heads in the sand all they want to. All that does is stick their asses up in the air for a good swift kick.

And I personally don't give a tinkers damn what I am "mandated" to buy or do. They can all go to "hell".

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, the Missouri vote meant “nothing.”

I can't believe that they're talking about fining poor people for not having insurance. but health insurance is too expensive to buy.

I've felt for a long time that our voting system is compromised by many things, but also by the fact that the politicians normally lie.

Many democrats hate Obama because Obama supports war and torture. And I've read that a poll showed that 40% of the loyal democrats may not vote in 2010. and you know that people who supported the republicans were equally frustrated.

1988 - George HW Bush stood before the people at the RNC Convention and said 'read my lips - no new taxes'. Then in 1990 we were told that democrats forced GHW Bush to sign tax increase legislation.

1992 - Bill Clinton in a debate ridiculed GHW Bush for his failure to 'get tough' with china. Then in 1994 Bill Clinton agreed with the chinese on the currency fix which has greatly disadvantaged American producers.

2000 - GW Bush in debates told us his highest priority in foreign policy was for him to be 'humble' and always consult foreign leaders before taking any action. GW Bush also said he'd provide 'choice' in education.

2008 - Obama did project the image of 'change', he used it in his slogan actually and yet he's provided no change. On every significant issue he has continued Republican policies.

Since Democrats took over congress following the 2006 election they have tended to strongly support the war funding. 90% of democrats in congress routinely vote for war funding. the rank and file democrats are extremely pissed over this.

Our so-called democracy has been rendered completely dysfunctional by the propensity of politicians to simply lie.

Repeatedly I've read news articles about the war funding. Over and over the democrats vote to fund the wars. And they do it with 90% of them voting for that. and one time the democrats who were the majority issued a statement and said that they were forced to vote for the war by the republicans who were the minority. They actually issued a statement saying that.

In today's congress the Democrats are more likely to vote for war funding than the republicans. that's not a joke, it is simple fact.

the liberals put so much faith in Obama that a lot of liberals have learned to support war and torture simply so they can keep opposing republicans by supporting their leaders. their leaders who have gone over to the republican side by supporting war and torture. There's a lot of psychotic liberals who fall into this type of thing.

The sad fact is that Democrats have always traditionally been pro-war. Many isolationist anti-war movements prior to WW1 and WW2 were dominated by Republicans. In fact, the Republicans prior to the 1980's used to run on campaigns that stressed that Republicans generally didn't want to start wars, and stood for "Peace and Prosperity".

That line, for what its worth, was pretty close to truth, until the 1980's.

Keep in mind, I'm not a Republican. Just noting a historical factoid.

So now of course Republicans are pro-war and sadly so. Democrats (at the leadership level) however, have been pro-war since at least the mid 19th century.

Many isolationist anti-war movements prior to WW1 and WW2 were dominated by Republicans.

you're right about that. and I liked those 'america first' republicans from the late 1940's & 1950's. all they wanted was our government to focus on our country and not build an empire. they were advocating what George Washington advocated in his Farewell Address. They were not hostile to the rest of the world. but in educational forums and in the mass media they are portrayed as being like NAZIs.

I think that it is so well demonstrated that nations are led by their leadership. The people will follow their leaders.

I think it drives them all nuts, not just the left.

I bet that if we (those that despise our government) were unarmed, the left and right would unite to kill us all, and they'd do in a heartbeat. And it would be the kikes that put them up to it.

It's that pesky damn 2A that's stopping them, as well as our total unwillingness to just hand them over whether there is a 2A or not. And they know it.
