On Tuesday, 5-year-old Edwin Villarreal was allowed to leave Maplelawn Elementary School with Robert Paniagua, 40, though the man was not related to the child, nor, as it turned out, had he ever even met the little boy. When Villarreals mother arrived to pick up her son, panic set in and police began looking for the boy.
A few hours later, Dallas police found the child unharmed with Paniagua in a neighborhood close to the school.
Paniagua was apparently doing a favor for a friend and picked up the wrong boy whom he had never met. Villareal has the same first name as the other boy. No charges related to taking the child have been filed against him.
However, police arrested Paniagua on outstanding warrants, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a hold on him, as he is in the country illegally.
Maplelawn Elementary School has now changed their dismissal policy and will require identification checks for anyone picking up a child, unless teachers recognize them.
