Kaufman urged voters to cast their ballots early to help the county cope with a possible shortage of equipment on election day. "Because I dont expect to have 10,000 pieces to work with, no matter what we do, Im sure that were going to be putting on a full court press urging people to vote early," Kaufman said. Kaufman said she expected that the fire in a county warehouse in the 600 block of Canino, in north Houston, has destroyed $30 million worth of equipment and caused $10 million more in damage to the building. Kaufman hopes to cobble together a collection of voting machines through loans from other counties and replacement equipment from its vendor, she said. All five members of Commissioners Court contacted her Friday morning to pledge their support in helping her with the resources needed to stage a successful election in which early voting begins in just 52 days, she said. Kaufman encouraged people to vote early in person or by mail. "There is no doubt in my mind that were going to have a timely election here and that were going to take care of the voters," Kaufman said. Houston Fire Department spokesman Patrick Trahan said arson investigators were at the scene of the fire, but no cause has been determined. The three-alarm blaze started about 4:15 a.m. at the football field-size warehouse the county uses to store its election equipment. Firefighters extinguished the flames about four hours later. No injuries were reported. The countys voting machines, including eSlate equipment, were stored at the nearly 27,000-square foot facility, county officials said. Early voting begins Oct. 18. Election Day is Nov. 2. Fire officials said a county animal control facility that houses animals is nearby, but that building was not involved in the fire and the animals were not in danger. The massive flames lit up the sky for miles and could be seen from the Hardy Toll Road near Little York. chris.moran@chron.com dale.lezon@chron.com COMMENTS: u67 wrote: Isn't it a coincidence that this warehouse holds Harris County voting machines and this fire happens a day after a story breaks about 18,000 out of 25,000 voter registrations are determined to be fraudulent????? Well let me help you out, this warehouse had the voting machines used by the Republican party, earlier reports say. Out of 25,000 they submitted applications, about 7,000 were accepted and 5,000 were deemed fraudulent. It's the Wild West down here, folks. Gonna be a helluva November. Don't vote, unless it's against, it only encourages the bastards. Voting has been a fraud for generations in this country.
Yeah, I'm sitting this one out. The entire warehouse was burnt to a crisp, by the way. There's nothing left. Total loss. God knows what data was on those machines. Houston, we have a problem.
There is no long form.
Too funny. Get some kenyan stimulus $$$ for new black box machines. Or print up some paper ballots if you want an honest election.
The results of the election is my guess.
Gubernatorial candidate Bill White's stomping grounds. Coincidence, no doubt.
he who wants bread is the servant of the man that will feed him, if a man thus feeds a whole people, they are under his control.
I wonder if Bev Harris (Black Box Voting) is happy that this occurred in "HARRIS COUNTY" ?
"To communicate anything to a goy about our religious relations would be equal to the killing of all the Jews, for if the goys knew what we teach about them, they would kill us openly". (Book of Libbre David, 37.)
I am starting to suspect that people (i.e., the party) that bought all these machines some years back might be behind this arson. With other people in charge now (or soon), someone might have bothered to open the machines and figure out how the previous elections were gamed.
