LONDON (Reuters) – God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity.

Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics -- Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles.

His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.

He wrote in A Brief History ... "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Hawking, who is only able to speak through a computer-generated voice synthesizer, has a neuro muscular dystrophy that has progressed over the years and left him almost completely paralyzed.

He began suffering the disease in his early 20s but went on to establish himself as one of the world's leading scientific authorities, and has also made guest appearances in "Star Trek" and the cartoons "Futurama" and "The Simpsons."

Last year he announced he was stepping down as Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Newton and one he had held since 1979.

"The Grand Design" is due to go on sale next week.

God created the universe, but man does not care or pay any attention to God, so why does it matter.

His IQ is 160........perhaps you should refrain from betting.

His IQ is 160....

It doesn't matter how high his IQ is, he's a very foolish man.

Stephen Hawking is a remarkable guy, IMO. His physical condition is very destructive, and yet his mind is still more academically capable than most anyone else's. Normally, when the body degrades, the mind can soon follow.

I could certainly see room for some bias on Hawking's part, given that he's been basically cheated of a life of physical ability. That can certainly be a reason for him to personally not believe in God.

For me, "foolish" is not an appropriate description of Hawking.

I think it fits him perfectly.

Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Romans 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Romans 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Now this Hawkings guy would have you believe that he is brilliant and knows everything worth knowing. But you can take all his knowledge and add it to that of the rest of mankind and it would not equal that of the Creator. His thoughts are far above ours, even those of the man who said God wasn't necessary.

That doesn't seem to be his character as I gathered it. I read his "A Brief History of Time" some years ago and it's already well outdated. He wrote that book before it was discovered (if it's true) that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. I remember distinctly his mentioning that if the big bang expanded at a rate the smallest fraction of speed less than what it was, gravity would have caused a recontraction. That is not accepted by any cosmosogist since it was discovered (?) that the universe expansion is accelerating in defiance of gravity, not slowing down.

So he was wrong before and it's well documented. I've no reason to think him dishonest. Wrong is always possible, but that's not a crime.

But you can take all his knowledge and add it to that of the rest of mankind and it would not equal that of the Creator. His thoughts are far above ours, even those of the man who said God wasn't necessary.

Agreed. But I don't think he's saying God is "not necessary" in the sense that we would be here today whether or not God is real. I think he's saying that God is not the only possible explanation for the creation of the universe which is different.

he's saying that God is not the only possible explanation for the creation of the universe which is different.

And that is why he not only looks like a retard but his mind is that of one.

Also, his book was out of date when it came out. It was always lacking.
