LONDON (Reuters) – God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity.

Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics -- Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles.

His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.

He wrote in A Brief History ... "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Hawking, who is only able to speak through a computer-generated voice synthesizer, has a neuro muscular dystrophy that has progressed over the years and left him almost completely paralyzed.

He began suffering the disease in his early 20s but went on to establish himself as one of the world's leading scientific authorities, and has also made guest appearances in "Star Trek" and the cartoons "Futurama" and "The Simpsons."

Last year he announced he was stepping down as Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Newton and one he had held since 1979.

"The Grand Design" is due to go on sale next week.

God did not create the universe, says Hawking

I recently saw a program with him discussing this issue, and I don't think he's actually proclaiming agnosticism. In the program I saw, he was simply arguing that a grand omnipotent creator isn't necessarily required to explain the existence of the universe and all that's in it.

In which case he's simply leaving the door open for spontaneous, non-divine creation.

I would add it was a bit of a depressing 1-hour program.

The condition of mental retardation is defined as "below average level of intellectual functioning, usually defined by an IQ of below 70 to 75, combined with limitations in the skills necessary for daily living."

He may be many things, but retarded isn't one of them.

Well, I don't think God's existence will ever be scientifically disproven. Most negatives are scientifically impossible to prove.

But what Hawking's does not attempt to explain in any of his programs or writings I've seen is why we each have a conscience. The old "I think, therefore I am" type philosophy has yet to be addressed by quantum mechanics or any other branch of science as far as I know. Granted that's likely not Hawking's area of expertise but any agnostic athiest needs to have a satisfied answer to that, I think.

But I think there are enough supernatural incidences that have occurred to support the notion that the universe is more than what we physically observe, including what Hawking's has so far delved into.

...edit fix...

According to who?

Any standard anlysis of the mean deviation amongst the humble masses and the intellectual capabilities noted by Hawkings. Nobody IS or EVER has been 300.

According to Hawkings, "People who boast their IQ scores are losers". However, he admits that his IQ is very high. Bill Gates and Bill Clinton are both supposedly 160, so that should tell you something about IQ scores. Einstein was also rated at 160.

Anything 140 or above is genius and 130-139 is gifted. Physicist / Engineer Kim Ung-yong has a verified IQ of 210, which is the highest ever recorded. In fact, he is the only one to pass 200.

It doesn't matter how his his IQ is, he's a very foolish man.

Stephen Hawking is a remarkable guy, IMO. His physical condition is very destructive, and yet his mind is still more academically capable than most anyone else's. Normally, when the body degrades, the mind can soon follow.

I could certainly see room for some bias on Hawking's part, given that he's been basically cheated of a life of physical ability. That can certainly be a reason for him to personally not believe in God.

For me, "foolish" is not an appropriate description of Hawking.

All highly intelligent creatures are "self aware". IMO it's a function of evolution, not divine "spark".

But I think there are enough supernatural incidences that have occurred to support the notion that the universe is more than what we physically observe, including what Hawking's has so far delved into.

I couldn't agree more. Even though we think we're highly advanced, (again IMHO) our comprehension of the universe is rudimentary. 100 years from now people will look upon us the same way we look at cavemen.

We haven't even scratched the surface, yet many think they have everything all figured out.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

Seems like Hawking's ego has overtaken his intelligence. NOBODY can say with any degree of certainty what existed prior to the creation of our universe, or the grand scheme of things beyond our understanding. Unless Hawking was around prior to the creation of THIS universe, he's just guessing, and has no logical or rational reason to claim he KNOWS that the universe can "create itself from nothing".

One question I'd have for him would be, what IS gravity? Is Hawking saying that just because there is such a thing as gravity, there can't be a superior intelligence that exists beyond his own human mind?

"The real deal is this: the ‘royalty’ controlling the court, the ones with the power, the ones with the ability to make a difference, with the ability to change our course, the ones who will live in infamy if we pass the tipping points, are the captains of industry, CEOs in fossil fuel companies such as EXXON/Mobil, automobile manufacturers, utilities, all of the leaders who have placed short-term profit above the fate of the planet and the well-being of our children." - James Hansen

But, despite your sympathy for Hawking's physical condition, you seem to agree with him about the Universe and methods of creation.

I think it fits him perfectly.

Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Romans 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Romans 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Now this Hawkings guy would have you believe that he is brilliant and knows everything worth knowing. But you can take all his knowledge and add it to that of the rest of mankind and it would not equal that of the Creator. His thoughts are far above ours, even those of the man who said God wasn't necessary.
