A paraprosdokian (from Greek "À±Á±-", meaning "beyond" and "ÀÁ¿Ã´¿º¯±", meaning "expectation") is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part. It is frequently used for humorous or dramatic effect, sometimes producing an anticlimax. For this reason, it is extremely popular among comedians and satirists.

Some paraprosdokians not only change the meaning of an early phrase, but also play on the double meaning of a particular word, creating a syllepsis.

Ø The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Ø Evening news is where they begin with 'Good evening', and then proceed to tell you why it isn't.

Ø To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

Ø A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

Ø How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Ø Some people are like Slinkies ... not really good for anything, but you can't help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs.

Ø Dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish.

Ø I thought I wanted a career, turns out I just wanted pay checks.

Ø A bank is a place that will lend you money, if you can prove that you don't need it.

Ø Whenever I fill out an application, in the part that says "If an emergency, notify:" I put "DOCTOR".

Ø I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Ø I saw a woman wearing a sweat shirt with "Guess" on it...so I said "Implants?"

Ø Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

Ø Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.

Ø Why do Americans choose from just two people to run for president and 50 for Miss America ?

Ø Behind every successful man is his woman. Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman.

Ø A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

Ø You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Here's a few more good ones:

•Where there's a will, I want to be in it.

•"I belong to no organized party. I am a Democrat." — Will Rogers

•"I've had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn't it." — Groucho Marx

•"Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana." — Groucho Marx

•"You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else." Winston Churchill

Another good one attributed to Churchill was the one where some woman made mention of him being drunk (which he usually was) and he admitted he was and said something like, But tomorrow I will be sober and you will still be ugly. Another one told him that if he were her husband she would give him cyanide and he said that if she was his wife he would take it.

Thanks. My favorite Winston anecdotes were the exchanges between Winston and Lady Astor (they mutually despised each other).

Lady Astor: Winston if you were my husband I would put poison in your Tea.

Winston Churchill: Madam if I were your husband I would drink it.

Lady Astor: Winston I do believe you are drunk.

Winston Churchill: Madam, I do believe you are ugly. I shall be sober in the morning.

If you can find a copy a fun book to read is "The Fine Art of Literary Mayhem" which is about famous writer's feuds. Another good one is "The Complete Curmudgeon".

Dorothy Parker was well known for having a pen dipped in acid. She began one book review with the following:

"This is not a book that should be tossed aside lightly, it should be flung with great force. ..."

"That woman speaks eighteen languages, and she can’t say 'No' in any of them" and "If all the girls who attended the Harvard-Yale game were laid end to end, I wouldn't be surprised." Dorothy Parker

Dorothy was quite a character. She even out did Truman Capote once on the Jack Paar show. I can't remember it verbatim so I won't relay it. I have around here in a book. If can find it I'll copy it over.
