A ten minute upgrade just isn't enough time to post any quips on your outage thread.
Well, truth be told, the upgrade was already started when I made the initial post, though only by a minute or two. That was during the download phase.
Just upgraded the server OS again. This will be the last for quite a while. Next I'm going to revisit the DB cleaning program which didn't go right last time and gave 4um an outage hour or two. Maybe this time I'll place the dynamite more carefully.
Does the DB cleaning program erase discussions or archive them?

Neither. It gets rid of all the obscenities and foul, over the top insults that sometimes gets posted here. Just kidding. But it is neither, actually. The DB can slowly accumulate defects as time goes by. These are defects that in small numbers don't cause any problem as the whole mysql setup is rather robust and can work around them. But in a large DB, the defects can reach a point where the server starts to struggle to keep up. That's happened a few times and the result is essentially a server crash. So a regular DB scan and fix can repair those defects and avoid those outages. It's interesting that mysql can work with these defects and still retain 100% data accuracy. Perhaps later versions of the server software will have this type of DB repair operations done constantly.

That's good to know and it's good to know that you are on the job. I hope that server software updates can make your repair chores easier. Yes, it is very interesting to me that mysql can work with defects here and still retain 100% data accurately. According to the Latter-Day LF staffers, it wouldn't work at all unless they mowed down vast swatches of threads and disintegrated them. I always suspected that was just their excuse to wreak havoc on the place, shut it down for long periods, and act as censors. Doubtful the software there was some decrepit old version that couldn't compare to 4um's. Keep on keepin' on. ;)
