Afghan group's treasurer admits receiving money from Iran, newspaper says

Iran is paying Taliban fighters $1,000 for each U.S. soldier they kill in Afghanistan, according to a report in a British newspaper.

The Sunday Times described how a man it said was a "Taliban treasurer" had gone to collect $18,000 from an Iranian firm in Kabul, a reward it said was for an attack in July which killed several Afghan government troops and destroyed an American armored vehicle.

The treasurer left with the cash hidden in a sack of flour, the newspaper said, and then gave it to Taliban fighters in the province of Wardak. In the past six months, the treasurer claimed to have collected more than $77,000 from the company.

The Sunday Times said its investigation had found that at least five Kabul-based Iranian companies were secretly passing funds to the Taliban.

The newspaper's correspondent, Miles Amoore, said he met and interviewed the treasurer, who he said had been an illiterate farmer who was taught to read and write, plus basic accountancy, by the Taliban last winter.

"We don’t care who we get money from," the treasurer was quoted as saying. He described the relationship with Iran as a "marriage of convenience." Iran is a predominantly Shiite country, while the Taliban is dominated by Sunni Muslims.

'For jihad' "Iran will never stop funding us because Americans are dangerous for them as well. I think the hatred is the same from both us and Iran. The money we get is not dirty. It is for jihad," the treasurer told Amoore.

Yes, I too have found that to be a bit contradictory and rather obvious propaganda.

US Does Not Consider Taliban Terrorists

--Even as the Taliban attacks US, Canadian, and British forces, organization is left off terror list in 'political' decision--

Courtesy Of: The Christian Science Monitor
By Tom Regan
May 2, 2006

When the US State Department issued its annual Country Reports on Terrorism [1] last Friday, it listed numerous state-sponsors terrorism, like Iran, and groups it considers Foreign Terrorist Organizations [2], like Hamas, Al Qaeda, and Hizbullah. Conspicously absent from the lists, however, was the Taliban.

In an article entitled "Terrorism's Dubious 'A' List," the non-partisan Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) reports that the religious extremist organization has never been listed [3] as a terrorist groups by the US, Britain, the EU, Canada, Australia, or any coalition partners, despite the fact that during its six year rule in Afghanistan, it provided safe haven for Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda, and currently is staging terrorist attacks against coalition forces and waging a national campaign of intimidation and fear.

The new report did designate the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region as a terrorist "haven," however.

In a CFR Q&A on the Taliban, Christopher Langdon, a defense expert at the Institute for International Strategic Studies, describes the group as "An Insurgency Organization" that will periodically "Use terrorism to carry out its operations."[4]

According to Kathy Gannon, the former Associated Press bureau chief for Pakistan and Afghanistan, these [Taliban] have at times aligned themselves with Al Qaeda fighters and with Mujahedeen (holy warriors) led by the anti-government warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

During the Soviet Occupation, Hekmatyar received more support from US and Pakistan agents than any other fighter.

"The Afghan Taliban is better organized today than it was in 2001," says Gannon, "They have more recruits [and they] have been able to take advantage of the lawlessness, the criminal gangs, and the corruption in the government."

Langton says Taliban forces "Have largely recovered from their initial defeat," and are proving a savvy enemy for coalition forces. Taliban fighters have become encouraged by the domestic opposition some NATO nations face as they deploy in former Taliban strongholds previously patrolled by US forces, he say. "They are very adept at reading these signals and seeing where the weaknesses lie."

...The steadily worsening situation in Southern Afghanistan is not the work of some ineffable Al Qaeda nebula. It is the result of the real depredations of the corrupt and predatory government officials whom the United States ushered into power in 2001, supposedly to help fight Al Qaeda.

another zio-hasbara

Iran is the strongest local enemy of taliban, iran helped us against talaban in 2003

Israel: ‘Tehran pays Taliban to kill US soldiers’ Posted on September 6, 2010 by rehmat1| Leave a comment

The British daily ‘The Sunday Times’ (owned by Zionist Rupert Murdoch) has come- up with another Israeli hasbara cocky ‘smoking gun’. It claims that Tehran is paying US$1,000 to Taliban for every American soldier they kill. Last year, The Telegraph, another newspaper owned by Murdoch had claimed that Iranian President Dr. Ahmadinejad has Jewish roots.

“Iran will never stop funding us because Americans are dangerous for them as well. I think the hatred is the same from both us and Iran. The money we get is not dirty. It is for jihad,” The daily quoted its reliable source. Is it any different than the tens of millions of dollars the US paid to Afghan Mujahideen to kill Russian soldiers in the 1980s?

Furthermore, US has been paying Jewish Army $3 billion annually to kill Palestinian and Lebanese youth and American soldiers in Iraq. The Pentagon had paid US$800-1,000 per week to the US mercenaries in Iraq.

Since now, Gen. David Petraeus (aka ‘mlitary poodle of Zionism’) is commanding the US-NATO occupation forces in Afghanistan – we will be hearing a lot of such Israeli jokes.

During a Senate hearing (April 8-9, 2008), Petraeus blamed Tehran for his military set-backs:

General Petraeus: “President Ahmadinejad and other Iranian leaders promised to end their support for the special groups but the nefarious activities of the Quds Force have continued.”

Senator Joseph Lieberman: “Is it fair to say that the Iranian-backed special groups are responsible for the murder of hundreds of American soldiers and thousands of Iraqi soldiers and civilians?”

General Petraeus: “It certainly is…That is correct.”

There is no denying the fact that Tehran has maintained good relations with the US-appointed governments in both Kabul and Baghdad. It has donated billions of dollars for the reconstruction work through NGOs. Karzai and Maliki has visited Tehran more frequently than they have visted the White House.

US Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, who is currently visiting Turkey to seek the extension of 1,700 Turkish troops in Afghanistan – has urged Ankara to help the US to make sure that Islamic Republic doesn’t gain the capability to make nuclear weapons: “The mutual goal of Iran not achieving a nuclear-weapons capability, that we completely agree on, we just need to reinforce. Both countries need to do all we can to make sure that doesn’t happen.” Mullen avoided to discuss the issue of Israeli commandos killing nine Turkish aid workers on May 31, 2010 on board Free Gaza flotilla, calling it a ‘political issue’. However, he did pray for renewal of Turkish-Israeli friendship.
