Doesn't he mean warlock? "Witch" is female.

It's amazing he knows all about bobbing for apples, but wasn't smart enough to pick a correct title for himself, though it does sound suitably impressive when he refers to himself as a "Master" at something.

"Witch" is a good illustration of the way that our English words have lost their gender and inflectional endings.

In Old English or Anglo-Saxon wicca (pron. witch-ah) was the male and wicce (pron. witch-eh)was the feminine form. We see the word "witch" used throughout our literature to refer to sorcerers, pagans and various unfortunate apostates.

"Warlock" seems to be be a usage from Scottish English. Interestingly, "he was a witch" gets 22,000,000 hits on google while "he was a witch" garner 18,000,000.
