Title: Corn syrup producers to change name to 'corn sugar' as awareness over health concerns grow

Bad press over health concerns has affected sales for the corn syrup industry and as a result the Associated Press reported today that corn syrup producers want to "sweeten up its image with a new name: corn sugar." The article explained:

The bid to rename the sweetener by the Corn Refiners Association comes as Americans' concerns about health and obesity have sent consumption of high fructose corn syrup, used in soft drinks but also in bread, cereal and other foods, to a 20-year low.

The group plans to apply Tuesday to the Food and Drug Administration to get "corn sugar" approved as an alternative name for food labels.

The article goes out of its way to include statements of the safety of high fructose corn syrup, claiming the only known negative health effect is obesity.

"But sugar and high fructose corn syrup are nutritionally the same, and there's no evidence that the sweetener is any worse for the body than sugar, said Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The bottom line is people should consume less of all sugars", Jacobson said.

"Soda pop sweetened with sugar is every bit as conducive to obesity as soda pop sweetened with high fructose corn syrup," he said.

The American Medical Association says there's not enough evidence yet to restrict the use of high fructose corn syrup, although it wants more research."
(My note - Translation: The AMA was paid off as usual.)

This claim about obesity has already been disproved by a recent Princeton University study:

"Some people have claimed that high-fructose corn syrup is no different than other sweeteners when it comes to weight gain and obesity, but our results make it clear that this just isn't true, " researcher Bart Hoebel said.

Hoebel and colleagues fed two groups of rats an identical diet, supplemented with one of two sweetened beverages. One beverage consisted of a sucrose solution in concentrations similar to those found in many sweetened beverages. The other consisted of a high-fructose corn syrup solution at roughly half the concentration of a typical soda. The researchers found that the rats consuming the corn syrup solution gained significantly more weight than the rats consuming the sucrose solution.

Additionally, a study reported by Reuters just last month exposed that cancer cells "slurp" up high fructose corn syrup and use the syrup to "divide and proliferate."

Pancreatic tumor cells use fructose to divide and proliferate, U.S. researchers said on Monday in a study that challenges the common wisdom that all sugars are the same.

Tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the two sugars in two different ways, the team at the University of California Los Angeles found.

This study and others have led natural health professionals like Dr. Joseph Mercola to label high fructose corn syrup "cancer's favorite food." The message is getting so loud now that the AP article mentions that Michelle Obama refuses to allow her children to consume products with corn syrup.

Nearly every processed food now contains HFCS. However, many beverage companies have already started making and promoting "new" drinks made with real sugar, a move that has been driven by consumer demand based on growing awareness over the negative health effects. Perhaps the corn syrup industry believes the public is so dumbed down that simply changing the name will erase the health concerns.

Poster Comment: So, we can see that the Public Relations War has begun as the Corn Syrup industry tries to make a silk purse out of a Sow's ear. I have been aware of the growing concern over HFCS for at least 2 years and possibly 3 now. The reality is that a lot of the "pretty" food you see in the Supermarket contains a lot of borderline ingredients and some that are flat unhealthy in nearly any quantity. Nearly all Soy products are now GMO with unknown long term results (the last number I saw was that 85% of all Soy grown in the U.S. is now GMO) and even that labeled "Organic" cannot be trusted because of pollen contamination from wind and insect carried GMO pollen (another concern with Soy and Soy products is the naturally occurring MSG which is a nerve toxin which over-excites neurons and brain cells to the point of death of the cell - thus the name Excito-toxin). Yellow Corn is much the same. White Corn and Popcorn are still safe for the time being as there is enough genetic difference to preclude cross pollenization from GMO Yellow Corn.

The reality is that industrial food interests, and the Agenda 21 crowd, DO NOT CARE if their McFood has long term adverse health side effects as long as you keep buying it, don't read labels, and don't inform yourself. The way to fight back is to not buy it. Buy organic and local if at all possible. Farmer's Markets, and local growers that sell direct are options and they are good ones. Grow some of your own food. This year I grew 16 varieties of tomatoes (counting cherry tomatoes) and I guarandamntee ya' that what comes out of my garden is not only safe but a hell of a lot better tasting than the pink rocks and tasteless hybrids that the major supermarket chains want to sell you at obscene prices. If you can't grow your own buy from the local Farmer's Market. Can your own, buy a dehydrator (I've already dehydrated enough tomatoes to last me most of the winter) and by picking the green tomatoes and letting them ripen indoors, just ahead of first frost, I'll have fresh tomatoes until Thanksgiving. In all but the farthest north you can overwinter carrots and green onions and they require minimal attention. Salad lettuce prefers the cool weather of Spring and Fall and is a snap to grow - just learn to thin it a bit to give it about a foot between heads. Just get them started now while the weather is still good.

There are a lot of strategies to eat healthy and good. Become an INFORMED consumer not a Sheeple who dies early from food associated disease. Subscribe to *Escape From ElPee*

They could label it Butterfly Unicorn Dust if they were so inclined but the fact is that it's too late, the horse has already fled the barn on this subject. HFCS is teh eeebil and everybody knows it now. And every time they try to rename it, we'll know about it before the name change. :)

Yes and no. There are a good 25 different euphemistic names under which the food processors hide MSG in order to camouflage its presence in their product. "Hydrolyzed Soy Protein" is one and there are many others.

My rule of thumb is if I can't pronounce it I don't buy it. However, generally I buy organic, raise my own, or go local. I DO NOT buy ANY snack product unless it is labeled organic. Fortunately I'm a, all modesty aside, good cook so I can make my own. Hmmm? I feel the urge for some muffins coming on. ;-)

GM foods are bad period and should at least have to be labeled as containing GM food like Europe requires of all food labels.

No longer true thanks to Monsatan's introduction of GM Sugar Beets. Unless it says "Pure Cane Sugar" or "Organic", and was produced in the U.S., it likely has GM Sugar in it.

I do agree that GMO's are bad juju. There have been no long term studies, and the FDA/USDA are in Monsatan's hip pocket. The revolving door in the FDA and USDA is notorious and true. Industry people will get hired to go in and get the goodies passed through the approval process and then exit to return to a high paying job with the company that they continued to work for all along.

There is only one time of person who regards an FDA or USDA stamp with anything other than contempt. There is a common colloquial name for them even - Suckers.

Believe it or not, you can buy Coke in some countries made with real sugar. And they taste better too. I don't know what the difference in cost would be but I doubt it would cost the Coca-Cola company more than a penny or two more per bottle to use real sugar than that HFCS $#it.

Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end.

I no longer drink soda of any kind. My husband still drinks it though so I have started buying the Pepsi made with real sugar. I've purchased the Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper ones as well. Throw backs they call them.

Interesting. I started buying white corn a few years back. When the season starts you can get corn 4 or 5 for $1. A few years back though that corn was no longer yellow but white. I think it has a better flavor.

Judge Blocks GM Sugar Beet September 5th, 2010 by Tony

Judge Jeffrey White, of the Federal District Court in San Francisco has ruled that genetically modified (GM) sugar beets should not be planted or processed until the US Department of Agriculture has carried out a thorough assessment of their impact on other crops. According to the Judge “Monsanto’s Roundup Ready sugar beets had not been properly assessed and require an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and that the USDA should have assessed the impact the sugar beets could have on closely related crops such as red table beets and Swiss chard. Now the court has ruled in favor of the plaintiffs – a coalition represented by Earthjustice and the Center for Food Safety – to block the further cultivation of GM sugar beets while an EIS is prepared. The plaintiffs had expressed concern that GM beet pollen could contaminate non-GM and organic crops because sugar beets are wind pollinated. The court is allowing 2010’s crop to be harvested and processed as normal. But the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement can take up to 36 months which could pose supply problems later on. GM sugar beets account for 95 percent of those being grown in the US, according to the USDA figures. The court denied a permanent injunction against the planting of GM sugar beets. Sugar Industry Biotech Council said in a statement: “The sugar beet industry will provide its full support to USDA to allow full consideration of appropriate interim measures that allow continued production of Roundup Ready sugar beets.” The first crop of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready sugar beets was harvested in 2008 following.

God is always good!

That would be nice but you can expect Monsatan will appeal this to higher court.

Monsatan is trying to corner the market with their patented GMO trash on as many major crops as they can. The FDA and USDA are both in their hip pocket. So, you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be stopped only if it can be stopped by a court injunction.

I no longer drink soda of any kind. My husband still drinks it though so I have started buying the Pepsi made with real sugar. I've purchased the Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper ones as well. Throw backs they call them.

I've more or less kicked the soda habit. I stopped buying sodas with HFCS a couple of months ago - I was a Pepsi drinker. I have not seen any of the "new" ones that has real sugar. Although I'll bet it is GMO Sugar Beet sugar.

Ah, Dildoheads. That explains much. "Pills" Limbaugh doesn't get paid more than his program makes in advertising revenue for nothing. That would be something that would fry their little gizzards - to confront them with the fact that he is paid more than his program makes. The question of course is why? Because he delivers and is the best disinformation PsyOperator on radio.
