PHOENIX – Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he is ramping up his fight against illegal immigration and is calling on armed volunteers to do the patrols. Sheriff Joe is always talking about his department’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration but now he wants to commission a posse whose only job will be to enforce illegal immigration and human smuggling laws. The sheriff explains, “We have 57 different posses. I want 58.” Arpaio says posse 58 will be devoted solely to illegal immigration. “I want a little specialized unit. I think it's time to do that.” Details are sparse but, like the sheriff's other posses, this one will be made up of armed volunteers who will patrol rural areas looking for border crossers and human smugglers. The sheriff explains, “I want to concentrate more in the desert, maybe that’s where our air posse helicopters can help out because a lot of smugglers are crossing the desert. I like to get to them before they get to Phoenix.” Latino activist and Arpaio-foe Salvador Reza says Arpaio's announcement is meaningless because the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office already does sweeps and patrols. “He does this to create havoc and also to create fear,” Reza says. He says volunteer posse members who do not have full police training will likely make mistakes. Reza says, “The posse are just a bunch of inept people that are running around in sheriff’s marked cars.” While others are likening Arpaio's latest posse to a vigilante patrol group much like the one lead by neo-Nazis that made headlines earlier this summer, Arpaio says his men are trained. According to MCSO documents, posse members are required to get at least 16 hours of training in addition to firearms training. The sheriff says, “We do give them training on law enforcement but not the same as a deputy sheriff, but they have authority to make arrest when they’re operating under our supervision.” The sheriff says the new posse will be mobilized within three weeks. He says the posse will be outfitted with appropriate hardware and gear but it is still not clear what exactly that will entail.

The Sheriff is the direct law enforcement arm of the people.

His job is to divide us up and to be ultimately disgraced and discredited thus embittering some people. He's already embittered many ethnic mexicans and others. Sheriff Joe has been chastised in the past for putting guns in the hands of civilians and calling them a posse. Its not a good idea. He builds these posses for political support. Yesterday, on a Fox News interview Sheriff Joe Arpaio had, he said he had up to THREE THOUSAND members in various posses under his command. And these posse members are armed. That is more than enough manpower and firepower to make most armies think twice about messing with him.
there's been controversy in the past about Sheriff Joe's posses. I thought that he was not allowed to give them guns. Because these are amateur police officers and there's been some bad incidents with them. Joe is just getting public attention now at a time when the investigations are closing in on him.

Sure he can. Sheriffs in this U.S. have a LOT of power. He also has the power to escort federal agents to the country border of his jurisdiction, to expel them from his county.

Would this be the same federal government that closed in on Randy Weaver? The Branch Davidians? The same federal government that refuses to investigate voter intimidation in Philadelphia by the new Black Panther Party? That considers returning vets who are pro-life, and carry pocket Constitutions home grown terrorists? What are the exact federal charges against Sheriff Joe, and why should we care what the federal government thinks about anyone who they dislike?

I live in Sheriff Joe's county. I'm not going to bother putting up the negative info on sheriff joe or recounting the stories I've heard of him. I did support him many years ago. He's been sheriff for about 18 years. as I said above, things are closing in on sheriff joe. www.azcentral.com/news/el...-supervisors-demands.html believe it or not the total number of illegal immigrants that sheriff joe catches each year is insignificant in the big picture in putting a dent in the local illegal immigrant population. He has succeeded mainly in inflaming anti-american and anti-blanco attitudes among an ethnic group that is rapidly becoming the majority. If we were to desire to keep the illegals out, then we would systematically audit employers' payrolls to seek the illegals. then we would strongly punish the employers. That is the way to keep the illegals out. Sheriff Joe is not doing that. Perhaps such actions would be outside his authority as sheriff. Perhaps President obama should take the lead here. SB1070 does nothing to deter employers from hiring illegals. They do it every day. I am 100% certain that they feel there is no penalty on them for doing this even today. I know illegal immigrants who have been recently hired by employers. I know employers who have hired them. I've listened to the top managers at firms talk about the risks. Per federal law, if an employer takes photo-copies of the illegal's documents prior to hiring them, the documents appear to be legit, and if the employer keeps these photo-copies in a file, then the federal government will not hold that employer responsible for hiring illegals. Despite that it is widely known that illegal documents are sold inexpensively on the black market. I know illegal aliens who use such documents, I've seen these documents with my eyes. since you gave me your personal opinion, I'll give you mine. You're an idiot.

Since you live in Arizona then you should know that it is a very strong second amendment state complete with open carry laws. I doubt very seriously if Sheriff Joe has to arm his posses as its members likely own their own.

sheriff joe used county funds and county resources without county approval to set up a face recognition system for the Honduran government. that is only one of the half dozen things he's currently being investigated for by county, state and federal governments that are now starting to work together. there's been several lawsuits that each cost tens of millions of dollars over sheriff joe's antics. the prisons he builds are extraordinarily expensive. and there are other ways he's been extravagant with spending that is actually not even approved.

Sheriff Joe's office was using its personnel resources and its money too to install face recognition software in the nation of Honduras to assist the military leaders who overthrew the elected leader through a coup. This activity was not approved by the county board of supervisors. Therefore, it is a serious misallocation of funds. this is not the first time sheriff joe has been caught spending money in a manner that he is not authorized to spend money. Once the county board of supervisors told him specifically not to buy an expensive bus to transpor prisoners that he wanted. He bought it anyway. This is how Sheriff Joe is, he operates outside the law. That is why county, state and federal governments all 3 are currently investigating him on different issues. We are a county that suffers school shut-downs because of a lack of funds. and this sheriff spends money like it was nothing in foreign countries doing things we disapprove of. all of the people who support sheriff joe are dupes.

yes, you're correct. Sheriff Joe has also gotten into petty spats with multiple local politicians. The county sheriff's office under sheriff Joe carries on a feud with the county board of supervisors who must approve the spending. Sheriff Joe witholds information on a large scale from the board of supervisors. Sheriff Joe has instructed that the sheriff's department's computer system be separated from the rest of the county government. This resulted in chaos and has required millions of dollars to be spent by the county to correct it. Sheriff Joe has instigated lawsuits with other officials. and he requires that the taxpayers fund the lawyers he hires to engage in lawsuits. At one point he had 3 Washington DC law firms hired and was paying huge hourly fees to them rather than use sheriff's office lawyers to fight the lawsuits. Just in 2 years his expenses on his lawsuits have been about $6 million. We have shut down schools because of a lack of money. Sheriff joe didn't even pay time and a half to his detention officers/deputies as required by law. He's a law enforcement official who breaks the law. like I say, sheriff joe is really a psy-op. he causes great division. and he accomplishes nothing.
