Three reasons Christine O’Donnell might actually win

John Feehery - 09/16/10 11:33 AM ET

I got caught up in the moment Tuesday night and expressed my disgust with the primary victory in Delaware of Christine O’Donnell.

I didn’t (and don’t) think she is qualified to be a United States senator. I bought into the notion that Delaware is a traditionally blue state and that it required a moderate like Mike Castle to win. And I expressed, in fairly tough terms, how frustrated I was with conservative activists who seemingly would rather lose elections on purpose than have candidates they agree with 60 percent of the time win.

My principal frustration has to do, though, with Christine O’Donnell. I might agree with her position on all of the big issues (I am pro-life, anti-tax increase, pro-spending cuts), but I still don’t think she has exhibited the character necessary to occupy a Senate office. I think you have to pay your bills, pay your taxes, pay your tuition and generally be a good citizen who keeps your financial commitments to be qualified to be a United States senator. O’Donnell has a spotty track record on all counts, from what I hear.

I disagree with Mike Castle on many of his positions and votes, but I think he is a good person and a great public servant. I think he voted wrong on cap-and-trade, and his efforts on the Disclose Act were wrong-headed and anti-Republican. So I can see why conservatives wanted to vote against him. Believe me, I get it.

All that being said, the primary is over, and now we have to look at the election ahead of us. Here are four reasons O’Donnell, despite all her flaws, might very well win.

Her opponent: Chris Coons is terrible. He has been terrible when it comes to protecting the taxpayers and the fiscal integrity of the county he currently runs. According to a National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) analysis: “As New Castle County’s spending skyrocketed by 10 percent under Coons’s leadership, he shifted the burden for his irresponsibility to taxpayers with three massive property tax hikes of 5 percent, 17.5 percent and 25 percent respectively. In 2008, Fitch Ratings downgraded the county’s ‘rating outlook’ from stable to negative because the county’s cash balances were decreasing under Coons’s reckless stewardship.”

Her supporters: O’Donnell has become the newest media superstar, and that has helped her get the money necessary to run a decent campaign. The NRSC changed course and gave her the maximum donation allowed under law, and most Republican senators and presidential candidates will follow suit. In fact, she reportedly raised more than $500,000 the day after her primary win, with some reports saying she raised close to a million. That is a pretty impressive take for a woman who has no chance of winning.

Her state: Yes, Delaware has been a blue state, but it is not clear if that is because of the politicians or because of the voters themselves. Tom Carper, for example, is one of the most moderate Democrats out there. He is not from the Bernie Sanders school of Democrats, because he knows he can’t be. And while Mike Castle has been a very moderate Republican, his moderation came not because he had to vote that way, but because, as a former governor, he wanted to vote that way. Sure, Joe Biden had been unchallenged for a generation, but that doesn’t mean the state is deep-blue. It just means that Biden had been around for a long time. Delaware has one big city (Wilmington) and the rest is as rural as Alabama. The rural voters, given the choice, will vote like Alabamans. And as they showed in this election, they are motivated to vote, more so than the moderates.

The times: This is one of those elections where no incumbent is safe, and nobody with a record of raising taxes and raising spending is the favorite. This midterm election is a referendum on President Obama, and those who dislike him are much more likely to come out to vote. As Dick Morris points out in The Hill today, because fiscal issues are front and center in this election, conservatives are much more likely to do better, because people trust conservatives not to raise their taxes.

O’Donnell has a real shot at winning this thing. I don’t know if she will, given her flaws as a candidate, but I do know that my instant analysis that this seat was a goner was hasty and premature. This ain’t over till it’s over. And this year, who knows what will happen?

The rest of your remarks are simple anti-partisan complaints. Maybe you should come up with a better system. Good luck with that.

Sheesh, a good start would be to NOT continue to do the same damn thing and expect something different TC. What you will get is more failure and corruption, as I stated before. Why is this so difficult for you to grasp? Looking for "change" or "hope" in the two party fraud is as naive as voting for Obama. It's a case of an inability to see the forest for the two party fraud trees.

O'Donnell isn't really going to make any difference at all......that's my point. But, getting her into office paves the way for more of the same, no difference candidates who take up space and suck of the taxpayers teat while driving another nail in the coffin of the USA--more war, more partisan bickery, more blame game and no real solutions to ANYTHING. Why cheer for that?

Of course, supporting worthless old RINOs like Castle as a way to help Israel slightly less isn't actually much fun.

The Israeli control of our government will not be cut without a lot more people becoming aware of the reality that through blackmail, murder, extortion, and bribery that Israel now controls the Feral Government of the United States.

The best place to begin the counter-attack is at the State and local level as their control does not extend that far - yet.

"One of the least understood strategies of the world revolution now moving rapidly toward its goal is the use of mind control as a major means of obtaining the consent of the people who will be subjects of the New World Order." K.M. Heaton, The National Educator

It's a little GOP Tea Party sideshow.

Her stealing the Castle crown and catching both parties so unprepared tickles me to no end. Women like that aren't supposed to be able to do that.

The Dims ran a sacrifice candidate against an unstoppable old RINO, Castle. Except Christine grabbed the RINO crown and ran off with it, cackling at them. You just don't have a sense of political irony if you don't find that humorous.

The fact that both she and Coons are such awful candidates just makes it all even funnier.

However, her primary demonstrated just how vulnerable both GOP and Dims are in a lot of states considered to be quite Blue. Delaware is nothing like Alaska with Miller or Kentucky with Rand Paul.

Delaware politics: In debate, Chris Coons and Christine O'Donnell stress issues, not character

. . . The candidates fielded several questions about the nation's role in peace talks in the Middle East and foreign aid to Israel.

Both said they support America's role as a strong ally for Israel and favored continued peace talks between that nation and the Palestinian Authority.

When asked about cutting assistance to Israel in the annual foreign-aid bill, Coons said America should continue to back its strongest ally in the Middle East.

"Our relationship with Israel is one of the longest and most important we have in the world," Coons said. "I would fight to sustain our foreign aid to Israel."

O'Donnell said the nation should remain a strong ally of Israel, deferring specifics about cuts to the foreign-aid bill.

"It would be irresponsible for me to say yes or no because I've been a little busy the last couple of days," O'Donnell said. "I haven't had time to do laundry." . . . .

Well, you make the status quo ante argument well enough.

However, there are a few things that a Senator O'Donnell won't do that a Senator Castle would do.

He is a long-time antigun legislator.

So you won't have the Feinstein-Castle "Ban Guns For The Children" Bill of 2011.

GOA was right to totally oppose Castle just for his awful record on the Second.

Well, there you have it.

Coons is totally in the pay of Israel.

O'Donnell has been too busy to do laundry, let alone plot how to steal money from Americans to send to Israel.

I think the real value in her getting in is that more people will demand a third party. Gallop is already reporting that this is what people want. This picking the lesser of two evils because they actually fall in some small area of agreement with voters is a tired and worn out outcome of our election process, resulting in a country riddled with failure and corruption.

I support GOA myself. Castle had worn out his usefulness after his first term and I'm happy to see him gone. I'd simply like to see him replaced with a candidate who isn't placing more concern on masterbation than continual warring while crapping on the Constitution. This is another dog and pony show.

Judging by the Dims, being a deadbeat like Turbotax Timmy Geithner or Rangell tax-dodging ways or Kerry hiding from $7M in yacht taxes is a qualification.

But only for Democrats apparently.

Let's look for a moment at what O'Donnell hasn't done.

  1. She hasn't left a young woman to die in a wrecked submerged car after driving drunk.
  2. She hasn't allowed a male brothel to be operated out of her DC townhouse.
  3. She hasn't taken an underage male page of Congress to Portugal and molested him while overseas.

Now, those are the sterling qualifications of just three pols from Massachusetts. Just one state.

And O'Donnell isn't "qualified"? What exactly is "qualified" then?

I didn't say she wasn't qualified. She appears to be a nut, which qualifies her to be President.

Especially this silly argument that it's been this way for a long time, so we are "helpless" to do anything other than get behind the same worthless parties election in and election out.

'Zactly. "Keep on doin' what you always done, keep on gettin' what you always got." The best definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting that somehow the next time the result will be better/different.

Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end.

He (Gordon Duff) also implies that forcibly removing Obama, a Constitution-hating, on-the-down-low, crackhead Communist, is an attack on America, Mom, and apple pie. I swear these military people are worse than useless. Just look around at the condition of the country and tell me if they have fulfilled their oaths to protect the nation from all enemies foreign and domestic.

I'm so sick of seeing a pack of degenerates fastening down on the public trough like a herd of hogs, handing out our dough to their servants, I can't tell you.

I'm fine with O'Donnell and any other contender who comes from among the unwashed. Anything that sticks in both Pelosi's and Gingrich's craw is OK with me.

Mebbe she'll turn out to be the Good Witch of the North.

well it seems that maybe the people of Delaware don't have any good choices. surprise surprise!! you know as well as I that we shouldn't really have to ask which candidate is least among bad.

a few weeks ago there was a video here put up by ItIsTooLate fellow where a christian preacher with knowledge of satanic symbols was saying in the video that the US dollar and the seal of the US have satanic symbols on them. Does a satanic cult have control over our national government & major institutions? it is a serious question IMHO.

In sooth, it is no longer possible to take the country we live in very seriously

in truth? or in the south?

I understand. We've seen prominent leaders who worship at Bohemian grove. the god named Molech at bohemian Grove, the owl idol they have, the druid type priests they have there, the words they speak, all of this indicates religion. and it is a non-christian religion. The owl is used by satanic type people as a symbol. the god Molech has been worshiped for thousands of years. When jewish people did it 2500 yeas ago the prophet Jeremiah spoke about how it was a rebellion against god and said that the Old Covenenant promises were broken over this type of thing and failure to follow 'the law'. The god Molech is mentioned 10-15 times in the bible. we are warned strongly not to worship it. Yet some of our leaders do or at least they attend a religious ceremony at bohemian grove where Molech is worshiped. The Skull & Bones cult has religious overtones and it is not christian. have you ever read the transcripts of their ceremony? When a priest dressed in druid robes requires you to lay in a coffin and tell him privately about your sex life until the prist is satisfied and thus lets you get up and continue the ceremony, after which you fondle human bones. sorry, that is religious and it is distinctly non-christian. Our people don't support this stuff. and yet our leaders engage in it. Now this person Christine O'Donnel is being raised up. and she says she's dabbled in satanic worship. a huge warning to us all.

perhaps the satanic religious views are just being prepared for mainstream acceptance?

well it seems that maybe the people of Delaware don't have any good choices. surprise surprise!!

If your reward for winning is some lousy old RINO like Mike Castle, you've already lost.

I can see why the Tea folk and conservatives in the state wanted anybody-but-Castle.

You've no doubt noticed how reticent the NRSC is about O'Donnell. But if it had been their planned coronation of Mike Castle, they would be lecturing us all about rallying about the people's choice, respecting the people of Delaware, the usual lets-hug-the-RINO speech.

When are these GOP elites finally going to rally round and hug-the-conservative?

When it's a lib Republican, it's all party unity. When it's a commoner like O'Donnell who beat the RINO, they act like you dumped a turd on their doorstep.

Who knows what O'Donnell did as a teen? True, she may have been compromised. There's a lot of really scary stuff going on among those that aspire to our high offices. It's going to be interesting to watch this contest as people learn more about both her and Coon.

In the meantime, we have a number of interesting and credible non-establishment primary winners to watch.

Mike Lee of Utah

Mike acquired his love for the Constitution early on while discussing everything from the Due Process Clause to the Second Amendment around the dinner table. Mike's father, Rex Lee, served as Solicitor General under President Ronald Reagan and later as President of Brigham Young University. Mike attended most of his father's arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court, giving him a unique understanding of the government from an early age. As an attorney, he has acquired a more complete, practical understanding of why the Constitution is essential to the protection of life, liberty, and property.

Joe Miller of Alaska

Joe Miller is an Alaskan by choice. He grew up in a working class family in Kansas, and headed to the Last Frontier sixteen years ago because of his love for the outdoors. After graduating from law school, Miller accepted a position at a prestigious law firm in Anchorage. Just three years later, at the age of 30, he was appointed as a State Magistrate (the youngest then serving in Alaska) as well as a Superior Court Master for the Fourth Judicial District. Further honors followed four years later when Miller was appointed an Acting State District Court Judge and, shortly thereafter, U.S. Magistrate Judge in Fairbanks. Again, he had the distinction of being the youngest then serving in that federal position, not only in the state, but also in the entire nation. He was also the only judge in the United States, at that time, serving at both the federal and state levels simultaneously.

Ken Bucks of Colorado

With Ken Bucks grandfather first starting a shoe repair shop in Greeley in the 1930's, his family has a long history in the state. The youngest of three boys, Ken moved around a lot as a child but his love for the West never changed which is why he chose Colorado as his family's home.

Over the course of his career, he has worked as a truck driver, high school football coach, ranch hand, school janitor, paper boy, furniture mover, adjunct law professor, prosecutor, and businessman. Ken knows what Colorado families face everyday and is well prepared to serve as their voice in the United States Senate.

In 2004, Ken was elected as the Weld County District Attorney. Since that time, he has led a staff of more than sixty employees and built an impressive record of prosecuting criminals, supporting victims, and promoting crime prevention.

Sharron Angle of Nevada

Sharron was first elected in 1992 to the Nye County School Board of Trustees. The family moved back to Reno in 1995 and in 1998 she was elected to the Nevada State Assembly where she faithfully served until 2006 fighting for smaller government, lower taxes, and a better Nevada for future generations. She is proud of her past chairwomanship of We the People Nevada PAC that sponsored the Property Tax Restraint Initiative.

A true protector of the Nevada Constitution, Sharron has fought and won judicial battles to protect Nevadan's constitutional rights. In 2003 while serving as the Minority Whip in the Nevada State Assembly, Sharron challenged the Governor's proposed massive $800 million tax hike. Supported by Nevada's constitutional requirement that all tax increases be approved by a two-thirds super majority, battle lines were drawn between the Republicans in the Assembly and the Governor. Sharron and fourteen other courageous Republicans consistently voted against the tax measure through the end of the regular session of the legislature and on through two special sessions. The Governor then sued the legislature in Angle v Guinn to force a decision by the Nevada Supreme Court. The Court over-ruled the two-thirds requirement which meant the taxes were to be imposed through a simple majority rather than by two-thirds vote. Using her own funds, Sharron hired Dr. John Eastman of the Claremont Institute to defend the Nevada's Constitution against this injury. Angle and Eastman took this case to Federal District Court in Nevada, which ended up referring the case to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, then finally to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Rand Paul of Kentucky

Dr. Paul is the third of five children born to Carol and Ron Paul. He grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas and attended Baylor University. He graduated from Duke Medical School in 1988. Dr. Paul completed a general surgery internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center. Upon completion of his training in 1993, Rand and Kelley moved to Bowling Green to start their family and begin his ophthalmology practice.

Kelley-Bunning-Rand

In 1995, Rand founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, an organization that provides eye exams and surgery to needy families and individuals. Rand is a former president and 17 year member of Lions Clubs International, which is dedicated to preserving sight by providing eyeglasses and surgery to the less fortunate around the world. In recognition of his outstanding and sustained efforts to provide vision care to Kentuckians in need, Lions Clubs International has awarded Rand many of its highest commendations, including:

* Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services, Lions Club International Foundation * Lion of the Year Award, Bowling Green Lions * President’s Award, Bowling Green Lions * Fines E. Davis Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Service, Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation * Governors Appreciation Award for Sight Conservation, Lions Club International

In addition to his work with the Lions Clubs, Dr. Paul has provided free eye surgery to children from around the world through his participation in the Children of the Americas Program.

Ron Johnson of Wisconsin

At the age of 15, Ron started paying taxes when he began working at Walgreen’s Grill. He only started as a dishwasher, but he quickly rose through the ranks to become a night manager before reaching the age of 16.

Ron and his wife of 32 years, Jane, met during his senior year of high school. While in college, Ron lived at home and worked full time in order to pay for all of his college expenses. Because of his work ethic, Ron was able to graduate college debt-free and with $7,000 in the bank. On August 20th of the same year he graduated college, Ron and Jane married.

Ron then went to work as an accountant at a company called Josten’s and attended night school to earn an MBA. He completed all of the course work for his MBA except for his final thesis when another opportunity called.

In 1979, Ron and Jane moved to Wisconsin, where Ron started a business called PACUR with his brother-in-law. Ron was the accountant and a machine operator, and for most of the company’s first year, Ron traded 12 hour shifts with his brother-in-law until they could train other operators.

With the help and dedication of the fine people Ron had the privilege of working with, PACUR has grown from a company supplying a single customer to the largest producer in the world of a specialty plastic used in medical device packaging and high tech printing applications. PACUR sells its products all around the world, with one of its largest export markets being China. PACUR is still proud to say: “We don’t export jobs, we export plastic.”

you've got some good points. I think I'm pretty pessimistic towards all of the candidates in all of the races. it is a very hard choice when you think that you have to vote.

she's pro-war. she won't come out against the federal reserve. she supports paying down impossible debts. she says she'll do this by budget cuts. Even if she eliminates social security and medicare both she still won't make a balanced budget. You can't balance the budget without huge changes in the military/intelligence areas.

she made $5800 last year and wants to be senator this year.

and she's 'dabbled' in satanic worship. a lot of warning flags.

but as you said, what choices are there? could it be that our choices are arranged by the cabal that rules our country. and that all of them are bad.

PACUR sells its products all around the world, with one of its largest export markets being China. PACUR is still proud to say: “We don’t export jobs, we export plastic.”

No wonder he jumped to a 7 point lead on Feingold.

This is the Tea candidate I hadn't heard much about yet.

she made $5800 last year and wants to be senator this year.

I read elsewhere that it was actually $5800 earned income tax credit (welfare). LOL.

Don't matter. She can take the Bearded Kenyan Marxist.

What wonderful bios of the people who are in the hunt.

They all sound like real people, and not career pols.

Thanks for this one.

the only way to stop the illegals is to penalize the employers who hire them. and as I understand it both of you are opposed to that. You want to just let these illegals come in and take jobs???!??

I don't claim to know what others think but I can tell you that your alleged understanding of what I am opposed to leaves a bit to be desired. I don't care if people are fined for hiring illegals. I think they probably should be, especially since so many Americans are out of work. And no, unless you are hopelessly retarded you could never find anything in any of my posts that would lead you to believe that I want the illegals to come at all, let alone take anyone's job. I want them to get in line behind people who have been in that line for years. The illegals need to go back to where they came from, go to the nearest US embassy and apply for a visa. I had to get a passport and visa to travel out of the US so why shouldn't they get one to come in, just like everyone else has to? Well, except maybe the Kenyan. And I think they should deport his @$$ back to Kenya and take all his assets and he should forfeit his pension (at least).

You're welcome.

There was so much hand-wringing over O'Donnell here today, I thought it might be good to remind folks that her win wasn't the only event of significance in the primaries.

We should all pray for the dawn of an era that brings some "real people" to the fore in our country.

The old order is sick. It is going to die. We must be sure that we do not go down with it.

After all the O'Donnell garbage that came out yesterday and today, I had to bail and be very glad that I didn't send her any funds to pay for her apartment or groceries.

A long time ago, I learned that if someone will lie to you, they will steal from you.

A lie is just stealing the truth.

sorry James. I was accusing you and I should have only accused PaulCJ. he's followed me and made accusations that I don't want to stop the illegals. but I would prefer to stop the illegals and I am not the one who made the laws to let them in. I would prefer for the employers to be fined for hiring them, and I would prefer that the employers be audited regularly. I would prefer that it all be stopped. I feel that auditing employers' payrolls and punishing them is the only way to stop the illegals from coming.

As long as deecee refuses to secure and protect our borders, that's probably the next best thing.

But I don't, realistically, see that happening, either.

I guess most of us probably attribute things to others sometimes that don't fit or have anything to do with what or who they are. We all make mistakes, no problem.

Lod, auditing the employers is very effective in that you find the illegals that way. it is very cost effective if you're interested in enforcing the law. It is what we should've done a long long time ago. The law was purposely arranged in 1986 so that employers would not be hurt for hiring illegals. This is the source of the whole problem.

This is one of the most obvious failings in our immigration system. Employers pay their taxes because the IRS plays for keeps.

The INS and ICE do not.

Washington insists on operating our economy as a job magnet for everyone who slips under the wire. We would instantly cut this problem down to size if those idiots in DC did their job.

But employer enforcement is not the whole job. There is a tremendous problem of cartel supported smuggling and crime on the border. We put up high tech steel fence and because there is no one to watch that fence, illegals have hours to cut through that tough new steel fencing with cutting torches.

We need to finish the fence and and build and man a border road that will keep the desperados out. They're killing our folks.

Maybe Alvin and Christine can both get elected. When they go to DC, they can date each other.

Just picture it: Alvin whipping out his cellphone to show her a quick porn clip, Christine scolding that he'll go blind if he keeps looking at that stuff...a searing Washington love story, set against the backdrop of our most beloved national monuments.
