Three reasons Christine O’Donnell might actually win

John Feehery - 09/16/10 11:33 AM ET

I got caught up in the moment Tuesday night and expressed my disgust with the primary victory in Delaware of Christine O’Donnell.

I didn’t (and don’t) think she is qualified to be a United States senator. I bought into the notion that Delaware is a traditionally blue state and that it required a moderate like Mike Castle to win. And I expressed, in fairly tough terms, how frustrated I was with conservative activists who seemingly would rather lose elections on purpose than have candidates they agree with 60 percent of the time win.

My principal frustration has to do, though, with Christine O’Donnell. I might agree with her position on all of the big issues (I am pro-life, anti-tax increase, pro-spending cuts), but I still don’t think she has exhibited the character necessary to occupy a Senate office. I think you have to pay your bills, pay your taxes, pay your tuition and generally be a good citizen who keeps your financial commitments to be qualified to be a United States senator. O’Donnell has a spotty track record on all counts, from what I hear.

I disagree with Mike Castle on many of his positions and votes, but I think he is a good person and a great public servant. I think he voted wrong on cap-and-trade, and his efforts on the Disclose Act were wrong-headed and anti-Republican. So I can see why conservatives wanted to vote against him. Believe me, I get it.

All that being said, the primary is over, and now we have to look at the election ahead of us. Here are four reasons O’Donnell, despite all her flaws, might very well win.

Her opponent: Chris Coons is terrible. He has been terrible when it comes to protecting the taxpayers and the fiscal integrity of the county he currently runs. According to a National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) analysis: “As New Castle County’s spending skyrocketed by 10 percent under Coons’s leadership, he shifted the burden for his irresponsibility to taxpayers with three massive property tax hikes of 5 percent, 17.5 percent and 25 percent respectively. In 2008, Fitch Ratings downgraded the county’s ‘rating outlook’ from stable to negative because the county’s cash balances were decreasing under Coons’s reckless stewardship.”

Her supporters: O’Donnell has become the newest media superstar, and that has helped her get the money necessary to run a decent campaign. The NRSC changed course and gave her the maximum donation allowed under law, and most Republican senators and presidential candidates will follow suit. In fact, she reportedly raised more than $500,000 the day after her primary win, with some reports saying she raised close to a million. That is a pretty impressive take for a woman who has no chance of winning.

Her state: Yes, Delaware has been a blue state, but it is not clear if that is because of the politicians or because of the voters themselves. Tom Carper, for example, is one of the most moderate Democrats out there. He is not from the Bernie Sanders school of Democrats, because he knows he can’t be. And while Mike Castle has been a very moderate Republican, his moderation came not because he had to vote that way, but because, as a former governor, he wanted to vote that way. Sure, Joe Biden had been unchallenged for a generation, but that doesn’t mean the state is deep-blue. It just means that Biden had been around for a long time. Delaware has one big city (Wilmington) and the rest is as rural as Alabama. The rural voters, given the choice, will vote like Alabamans. And as they showed in this election, they are motivated to vote, more so than the moderates.

The times: This is one of those elections where no incumbent is safe, and nobody with a record of raising taxes and raising spending is the favorite. This midterm election is a referendum on President Obama, and those who dislike him are much more likely to come out to vote. As Dick Morris points out in The Hill today, because fiscal issues are front and center in this election, conservatives are much more likely to do better, because people trust conservatives not to raise their taxes.

O’Donnell has a real shot at winning this thing. I don’t know if she will, given her flaws as a candidate, but I do know that my instant analysis that this seat was a goner was hasty and premature. This ain’t over till it’s over. And this year, who knows what will happen?

that's definitely a positive.

Look at that! And he entered office with a surplus, promising to keep balanced budgets. He increased county spending by 10% and all these tax increases, he tries to blame on his predecessor. Let's see, raises spending through the roof, raises taxes through the roof after promising not to, runs the county to the brink of bankruptcy, now wants to go do the same in DC. As Harry Reid's "pet".

Coons did take a veiled shot at O'Donnell when he said he wasn't waiting on out-of-state endorsements, but he demurred on the influence of the Tea Party Express when asked after Thursday's forum. "What I've said for the last six months is what matters to me most is listening to the concerns of real Delawareans," Coons said. "If there are Delawareans who are active in the Tea Party Express or for whom that's an important source of information, great. God bless them. But what matters to me is presenting my ideas and qualifications to the people of Delaware."

Just look at that. He thinks it's "great" that there's a Tea Party in DE, that people get their political info from it primarily. And then he solemnly invokes God's blessing on their little tea party thing. Isn't that sweet?

He's crapping his pants is what's really going on. He thought this would be a safe sacrifice candidacy, taking one for the team against the coronation of worthless RINO Castle who had never lost an election in DE in forty years. This is why Beau Biden refused to run; he didn't want to be the sacrifice for Castle.

Then that crude woman, O'Donnell, sneaks up and steals the RINO crown from Castle and the NRSC and the bitch runs off with it, leaving them all looking like fools and tools. Which is exactly what they are.

It's just too too funny, this upstart O'Donnell upsetting this little RINO coronation. Both parties left standing with egg on their faces, both with candidates that are lousy from the perspective of the political pros.

But win? Hell, yes, she can win.

this incendiary video clip where Christine O'Donnel says she dabbled in satanic worship finds its way into the public eye right AFTER the primary is over.

perhaps we are being encouraged to think that we should be tolerant on satanic worship. after all, the alternative is a democrat and we all know how bad that is.

the people who rule our country are satanic. I guess we should be tolerant. value judgments are bad.

In the Maher interview, he asked about her public stance on Halloween. Her reply was that she was taken in by these Wiccans unaware and that Christians shouldn't be too Halloween-cozy because it might lead to some young people going Wiccan.

The interview in context isn't that damaging.

Not nearly as much as Coons' record of huge tax increases and county insolvency.

Not at all.

And as for supposedly unqualified candidates, why aren't we hearing all about Alvin Greene in SC? The black veteran living in his dad's basement, hides from the media, won't leave the house to campaign, was just indicted for sexual harassment for showing porn on his cellphone to some coed?

Maybe he should be getting equal coverage. He's far worse than O'Donnell.

He's far worse than O'Donnell

you're probably right about that too.

as for me, I think there's something wrong with a young woman that dabbles in witchcraft. should we raise such a person to be a US Senator? I say 'no'.

people will say that the alternatives are worse. She's failed to differentiate herself from the alternatives is my response. People here have told me that a candidate should not be expected to differentiate themselves. But she should.

We're still left with a situation where she has dabbled in satanic worship. Many believe the people who rule us are satanic.

Christine O'Donnell Practiced Witchcraft

Fast forward to 0:40 if you want to avoid Maher.

"On one of my dates as a witch was on a satanic alter, and I didn't know it. And there was a little blood there and stuff like that . . ."

I believe that you could make some decent part time change uploading laugh tracks for the upcoming November election shenanigans.

In sooth, it is no longer possible to take the country we live in very seriously.

In sooth, it is no longer possible to take the country we live in very seriously

in truth? or in the south?

I understand. We've seen prominent leaders who worship at Bohemian grove. the god named Molech at bohemian Grove, the owl idol they have, the druid type priests they have there, the words they speak, all of this indicates religion. and it is a non-christian religion. The owl is used by satanic type people as a symbol. the god Molech has been worshiped for thousands of years. When jewish people did it 2500 yeas ago the prophet Jeremiah spoke about how it was a rebellion against god and said that the Old Covenenant promises were broken over this type of thing and failure to follow 'the law'. The god Molech is mentioned 10-15 times in the bible. we are warned strongly not to worship it. Yet some of our leaders do or at least they attend a religious ceremony at bohemian grove where Molech is worshiped. The Skull & Bones cult has religious overtones and it is not christian. have you ever read the transcripts of their ceremony? When a priest dressed in druid robes requires you to lay in a coffin and tell him privately about your sex life until the prist is satisfied and thus lets you get up and continue the ceremony, after which you fondle human bones. sorry, that is religious and it is distinctly non-christian. Our people don't support this stuff. and yet our leaders engage in it. Now this person Christine O'Donnel is being raised up. and she says she's dabbled in satanic worship. a huge warning to us all.

perhaps the satanic religious views are just being prepared for mainstream acceptance?

Who knows what O'Donnell did as a teen? True, she may have been compromised. There's a lot of really scary stuff going on among those that aspire to our high offices. It's going to be interesting to watch this contest as people learn more about both her and Coon.

In the meantime, we have a number of interesting and credible non-establishment primary winners to watch.

Mike Lee of Utah

Mike acquired his love for the Constitution early on while discussing everything from the Due Process Clause to the Second Amendment around the dinner table. Mike's father, Rex Lee, served as Solicitor General under President Ronald Reagan and later as President of Brigham Young University. Mike attended most of his father's arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court, giving him a unique understanding of the government from an early age. As an attorney, he has acquired a more complete, practical understanding of why the Constitution is essential to the protection of life, liberty, and property.

Joe Miller of Alaska

Joe Miller is an Alaskan by choice. He grew up in a working class family in Kansas, and headed to the Last Frontier sixteen years ago because of his love for the outdoors. After graduating from law school, Miller accepted a position at a prestigious law firm in Anchorage. Just three years later, at the age of 30, he was appointed as a State Magistrate (the youngest then serving in Alaska) as well as a Superior Court Master for the Fourth Judicial District. Further honors followed four years later when Miller was appointed an Acting State District Court Judge and, shortly thereafter, U.S. Magistrate Judge in Fairbanks. Again, he had the distinction of being the youngest then serving in that federal position, not only in the state, but also in the entire nation. He was also the only judge in the United States, at that time, serving at both the federal and state levels simultaneously.

Ken Bucks of Colorado

With Ken Bucks grandfather first starting a shoe repair shop in Greeley in the 1930's, his family has a long history in the state. The youngest of three boys, Ken moved around a lot as a child but his love for the West never changed which is why he chose Colorado as his family's home.

Over the course of his career, he has worked as a truck driver, high school football coach, ranch hand, school janitor, paper boy, furniture mover, adjunct law professor, prosecutor, and businessman. Ken knows what Colorado families face everyday and is well prepared to serve as their voice in the United States Senate.

In 2004, Ken was elected as the Weld County District Attorney. Since that time, he has led a staff of more than sixty employees and built an impressive record of prosecuting criminals, supporting victims, and promoting crime prevention.

Sharron Angle of Nevada

Sharron was first elected in 1992 to the Nye County School Board of Trustees. The family moved back to Reno in 1995 and in 1998 she was elected to the Nevada State Assembly where she faithfully served until 2006 fighting for smaller government, lower taxes, and a better Nevada for future generations. She is proud of her past chairwomanship of We the People Nevada PAC that sponsored the Property Tax Restraint Initiative.

A true protector of the Nevada Constitution, Sharron has fought and won judicial battles to protect Nevadan's constitutional rights. In 2003 while serving as the Minority Whip in the Nevada State Assembly, Sharron challenged the Governor's proposed massive $800 million tax hike. Supported by Nevada's constitutional requirement that all tax increases be approved by a two-thirds super majority, battle lines were drawn between the Republicans in the Assembly and the Governor. Sharron and fourteen other courageous Republicans consistently voted against the tax measure through the end of the regular session of the legislature and on through two special sessions. The Governor then sued the legislature in Angle v Guinn to force a decision by the Nevada Supreme Court. The Court over-ruled the two-thirds requirement which meant the taxes were to be imposed through a simple majority rather than by two-thirds vote. Using her own funds, Sharron hired Dr. John Eastman of the Claremont Institute to defend the Nevada's Constitution against this injury. Angle and Eastman took this case to Federal District Court in Nevada, which ended up referring the case to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, then finally to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Rand Paul of Kentucky

Dr. Paul is the third of five children born to Carol and Ron Paul. He grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas and attended Baylor University. He graduated from Duke Medical School in 1988. Dr. Paul completed a general surgery internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center. Upon completion of his training in 1993, Rand and Kelley moved to Bowling Green to start their family and begin his ophthalmology practice.

Kelley-Bunning-Rand

In 1995, Rand founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, an organization that provides eye exams and surgery to needy families and individuals. Rand is a former president and 17 year member of Lions Clubs International, which is dedicated to preserving sight by providing eyeglasses and surgery to the less fortunate around the world. In recognition of his outstanding and sustained efforts to provide vision care to Kentuckians in need, Lions Clubs International has awarded Rand many of its highest commendations, including:

* Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services, Lions Club International Foundation * Lion of the Year Award, Bowling Green Lions * President’s Award, Bowling Green Lions * Fines E. Davis Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Service, Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation * Governors Appreciation Award for Sight Conservation, Lions Club International

In addition to his work with the Lions Clubs, Dr. Paul has provided free eye surgery to children from around the world through his participation in the Children of the Americas Program.

Ron Johnson of Wisconsin

At the age of 15, Ron started paying taxes when he began working at Walgreen’s Grill. He only started as a dishwasher, but he quickly rose through the ranks to become a night manager before reaching the age of 16.

Ron and his wife of 32 years, Jane, met during his senior year of high school. While in college, Ron lived at home and worked full time in order to pay for all of his college expenses. Because of his work ethic, Ron was able to graduate college debt-free and with $7,000 in the bank. On August 20th of the same year he graduated college, Ron and Jane married.

Ron then went to work as an accountant at a company called Josten’s and attended night school to earn an MBA. He completed all of the course work for his MBA except for his final thesis when another opportunity called.

In 1979, Ron and Jane moved to Wisconsin, where Ron started a business called PACUR with his brother-in-law. Ron was the accountant and a machine operator, and for most of the company’s first year, Ron traded 12 hour shifts with his brother-in-law until they could train other operators.

With the help and dedication of the fine people Ron had the privilege of working with, PACUR has grown from a company supplying a single customer to the largest producer in the world of a specialty plastic used in medical device packaging and high tech printing applications. PACUR sells its products all around the world, with one of its largest export markets being China. PACUR is still proud to say: “We don’t export jobs, we export plastic.”

You're welcome.

There was so much hand-wringing over O'Donnell here today, I thought it might be good to remind folks that her win wasn't the only event of significance in the primaries.

We should all pray for the dawn of an era that brings some "real people" to the fore in our country.

The old order is sick. It is going to die. We must be sure that we do not go down with it.

After all the O'Donnell garbage that came out yesterday and today, I had to bail and be very glad that I didn't send her any funds to pay for her apartment or groceries.

A long time ago, I learned that if someone will lie to you, they will steal from you.

A lie is just stealing the truth.

How classic would it be for a near-homeless person to go to the senate?
