Bill Gates stays No. 1 on list of America's wealthiest

September 22, 2010 |  6:29 pm

Bill Gates held his ground as the richest man in America in Forbes magazine’s annual listing of the  nation’s 400 wealthiest people.

The Microsoft Corp. founder’s wealth was estimated at $54 billion by Forbes -- $1 billion for every year of his life so far.

Gates’ good friend, Warren Buffett, remained No. 2 on the list, with a fortune estimated at $45 billion.

Gates1990 The rest of the Forbes Top Ten also comprised the same names as in 2009, though not all in the same order. Larry Ellison, CEO of software firm Oracle Corp., again ranked No. 3, with $27 billion. The No. 4, 7, 8 and 9 slots were held by members of the Walton (Wal-Mart Stores) family, worth a combined $84 billion.

Also keeping it in the family: The Koch brothers, Charles and David, tied for No. 5 with $21.5 billion each. They control Koch Industries, the second-largest private U.S. company. Their interests include forest products, chemicals, energy and ranching -- and funding libertarian causes.

Rounding out the Top Ten: New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, with $18 billion.

Californians account for one-fifth of the list, with 84 of the 400 slots. The richest Southern Californian is Orange County real estate legend Donald Bren of the Irvine Co., whose $12 billion ranks him No. 21 on the overall list.

The two youngest members of the Forbes 400 club, both just 26 years old: Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg, ranked No. 35 with a fortune estimated at $6.9 billion; and his former business partner, Dustin Moskovitz, tied for 290th place with $1.4 billion.

I don't care how much money he's got, I don't want to look like him.

My last girlfriend's sister knows Bill Gates, and he was obviously interested in her because he's pretty and six-foot-tall.

She was she was not the slightest bit interested in him.

Most people can see the picture: the bankers grease the politicians’ palms, the politicians bail out the bankers with public funds, the bankers pay themselves fat bonuses and loan the money back to the public with interest. It’s essentially a crime spree that benefits a social elite at the expense of many millions of victims.”

Of the elite oligarchy (list), how many would you say have the primary world view and personal philosophy of "America First?"

'none' is your answer.

I contend that these lists are garbage, mis-information.

I contend that the individuals who own the Federal Reserve are extremely wealthy and not on these lists. I contend that somebody made a fortune on derivatives trade which was $1.4 quadrillion over 10 years.

a quadrillion is a thousand trillions. a trillion is a thousand billion. A billion is a thousand million. A million is a thousand thousands. $1.4 quadrillion is a lot of money. More money than all of the property on all of the earth valued in US dollars. More money than exists or did exist prior to 1999 when derivatives trade was made legal.

These lists are lies.

If government taxed the $1.4 quadrillion in derivatives trade since 1999 at just 1%, then this would have raised $1.4 trillion in new tax revenue on average each year since 1999. This would have enabled not just balancing the budget every year since then, but paying down the federal debt dramatically. If we taxed it at 2%, then we wouldn't have to tax anyone else and we could still fund the wars. If we taxed at 3%, then we could make huge infrastructure investments and tax nobody at all but the derivatives trade people. and pay for social security, medicare, wars, war debt, etc.

I've got news for you. Derivatives trade does not create jobs. Yet in our country the people who rule refuse to even tax it. they made it legal, but they won't tax it. It is nothing but criminal activity made legal, this derivatives trade.

Why should poor people be taxed heavily through the payroll tax, but rich people not taxed hardly at all?

None that I can tell.
