Indiana Guard unit may deploy to Iraq

Up to 3,000 Indiana National Guardsmen are preparing for a call to active duty in Iraq.

The 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team has received word it could be sent overseas in an "advise-and-assist" role that would start in January 2012.

Though the call to active duty remains tentative, the unit has begun training for that scenario, said Maj. Shawn D. Gardner, an Indiana National Guard spokesman, in a prepared statement.

The brigade's mission would be to support Operation New Dawn -- the successor to Operation Iraqi Freedom, which President Barack Obama concluded earlier this summer. The U.S. military has handed over leadership of combat operations against insurgents to the Iraqi army and is now transitioning to a support role to help Iraqi forces.

The Indiana National Guard has 15,600 soldiers and airmen in its units, Gardner noted. Up to 3,000 troops from the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team would be deployed to Iraq under the tentative plan, he said in a statement. The brigade, with about 3,400 member, last deployed to Iraq in 2008 for a yearlong mission. It was the largest ever call-up of Indiana troops.
