it is now fashionable to say that the US government has financial problems because it spends money on poor people. but it spends by far much more money on rich people.

These 'no-bid' contracts that construction companies have with the government that result in huge amounts of money being spent on building projects, this is not for poor people. This over-the-top military spending, that is not for rich people. Truth is, 53% of all federal spending is military related including the DOD budget, the supplemental war funding, the intelligence agencies, the military retirement spending and the debt service expenses too as the debt was taken out to pay for military/intelligence spending.

If we eliminated social security and medicare all together it would save approximately as much as the annual federal debt. But people of our country paid taxes to support those programs years ago and the money was diverted to pay for military things.
