(Whitney Shefte/TWP) The Cost of War: Traumatic Brain Injuries Number 180,000, Could Be As Many As 320,000 — Washington Post On Sunday the Post released a series on Iraq and Afghanistan veterans living with traumatic brain injuries — TBIs, for short — a hidden cost of the wars. Members of the military, family members and others have responded to the series with gratitude that this injury is being brought to light, with anger that the problem has not been reported more widely and with sorrow that the men and women have been injured in the war. My Comment : An astounding figure …. the medical costs alone (and the cost on families) will number in the mega billions, as well as suffering and hardships for the families that are impacted.

these IED explosions are very powerful. They can send an armored vehicle such as a Stryker way up in the air. Our fellow Americans have been dying from IED explosions every day for over 5 years. And each time a death occurs there are several who are badly wounded. These bad wounds frequently involve amputations of 1 leg or arm and sometimes even all 4 legs and arms. and it frequently involves amputation of genitals. a US Army hospital decided to run an experiment and see what proportion of these IED victims who survive have brain damage. They systematically tested all of them they could and found that 50% tested positive on the brain damage tests. Yet most of these people found to have brain damage had not complained of it and therefore, the army had not tested them per their normal procedures. It seems as though there are a lot of TBI people who have never even been diagnosed. and it is certain that the army wishes to keep it that way.

Think of the employers who may want to hire former military people. I wonder whether brain-damaged people make good employees.
