Mexico City: A 20-year-old criminology student, the only candidate for the position, was designated as police chief in the violence-plagued town of Guadalupe Distrito Bravo, Mexican media reported Tuesday.

Marisol Valles Garcia took charge on Monday of security in the town, population 10,000, on the US border. The community is around 80 km east of Ciudad Juarez, itself regarded as the most violent city in Mexico.

Valles Garcia said she will not have to fight the drug gangs, which is the responsibility of other law enforcement agencies. Instead, she will pursue preventive programmes in neighbourhoods and schools, and she will be in charge of reclaiming public spaces for the community.

She will do very nicely as a pawn, now.

The government of Mexico needs to legalize all drugs and allow these cartels to open up drug stores along the border. Why should their people continue to die in the name of the American war on drugs?

Being only twenty years old isn't going to win her any sympathy and being a girl won't cut any ice with the drug mobs. I don't know who's brain child this stupid move was but I hope they didn't toss the 'help wanted' sign just yet.

Sounds like the Irish police force at the moment, light slips of girls now becoming Garda Officers. I saw a squad car one day with three girls like that in it.. and I thought to myself they wouldn't be out of place in a Citron Zara with the radio going bop bop bop.. lol
