Tests show that arming bacteria with minute studs of silver endows them with the ability to combat viruses. Norovirus, the winter vomiting bug, is unable to cause infections after coming into contact with the silver-impregnated bacteria. Silver lining: The common cold could become a thing of the past Silver lining: The common cold could become a thing of the past Researchers believe the same technique could be used to ward off other viruses, including those which cause flu and the common cold. Belgian professor Willy Verstraete discovered a way of studding harmless bacteria often found in probiotic yoghurts with nanoparticles of silver, each thinner than a human hair. Sprayed up the nose or rubbed into the hands, the silver-studded bacteria stop any viruses that cross their path from infecting cells. As viruses need to hijack a cells internal machinery to live and breed, barring them entry leads to their death. The common cold wreaks havoc among all age groups but the huge number of different viruses behind the symptoms means that a cure has, so far, eluded scientists. Comments: Ionic Colloidal Silver works and it don't build up in tissue.- Martin Schumann, Placerville, Ca It is irresponsible to make such unfounded assertions, especially where people's health is concerned. Colloidal silver CAN build up in tissue, and there are documented cases of it having done so. The scientific evidence is clear - it isn't effective, and it can be dangerous. Read the scientific literature on it, here's one paper - Fung MC, Bowen DL. "Silver products for medical indications: risk-benefit assessment". Journal of Toxicology and Clinical Toxicology 34:119-26, 1996 Silver really does have useful medical properties when properly used, but ingesting colloidal silver is dangerous. I It isn't just "big Pharma" that is a business - people are making big money from "supplements" like colloidal silver (selling the stuff itself, or machines to make it). - Burt, Plymouth, 20/10/2010 16:19 Ionic Colloidal Silver works and it don't build up in tissue. I have been using it for 12 years and have been without a cold or any other problems since 1998. Every year I would end up with two to three bad colds and the silver took care of the problem. I use about one ounce a week every week. I feel that it is time that they started using silver for it is the best antibiotic available and should be made so that it can legally be marketed as an antibiotic. - Martin Schumann, Placerville, Ca., Rating 21 Colloidal silver ... was in regular use by doctors up until 1938 when the Pharmaceutical companies discovered they could make more profit by selling antibiotics, so they stopped manufacturing colloidal silver. Now that antibiotics are no longer working against bacteria such as MRSA and VRSA colloidal silver is our last hope to kill these bacteria. Which is why I am concerned about what this professor is doing. It would seem he has found a way to make bacteria immune to colloidal silver. If this immunity was passed on to MRSA and VRSA then we are in big trouble. - Michael Haymar, Oxford 17:18 Some of the recent developments in nano-particles are genuinely worrying, i.e. particles in beauty products that permeate the brain barrier. The science is galloping forward so fast it makes your head spin and much though I would like to trust all medical science, the previous safety record is sketchy. Anything involving grants, profits and status via the quickest route is questionable. - Anna, Maidenhead, UK, Rating 16 This article doesnt discuss colloidal silver but below is a quote from the National Center for Complementary and Alternatives Medicines website - Side Effects and Risks Animal studies have shown that silver builds up in the tissues of the body. In humans, buildup of silver from colloidal silver can lead to a side effect called argyria, which causes a bluish-gray discoloration of the skin, other organs, deep tissues, nails, and gums. Argyria is permanent and cannot be treated or reversed. Other side effects from using colloidal silver products may include neurologic problems (such as seizures), kidney damage, stomach distress, headaches, fatigue, and skin irritation. Colloidal silver may interfere with the body's absorption of some drugs, such as penacillamine, quinolones, tetracyclines, and thyroxine. -
