I have to say that I knew a Jordanian, a couple Lebanese, a Pakistani, a Palestinian, a couple Iraqis and a Turk who were all muslims.

They almost all smoked, they drank a lot of tea, and they were universally much more courteous than my American peers. This was at a major University in Texas.

That sounds like the bar scene from Space Wars. No wonder you were enthralled!
