Local Man Accused Of Having Two Wives Suspect Could Be Charged With Four-Year Felony

POSTED: 6:30 pm EST March 2, 2005 UPDATED: 7:10 pm EST March 2, 2005

A local man faces charges after it was discovered that he apparently has two wives, Local 4 reported.

Devorah Brooks said she married Randy Brooks (pictured, left) in Ohio in 1995.

"(There was) a lot of lying, a lot of manipulating," Brooks said. "He was messing around when we got married and he just kept going. He never stopped."

But Brooks told Local 4 although she and her husband had problems, she never expected to hear that he was married to a second woman.

"I was shocked; she was shocked," Brooks said.

Randy Brooks apparently married his second wife at a Ferndale church in December, the station reported.

A man accused of having two wives sent teddy bears to his first wife each time he betrayed her, she said.

Local 4 learned that in addition to his two wives, Brooks has three four children with three different women. His second wife is also pregnant, according to the station's reports.

Devorah Brooks said her husband owes her several years of back child support payments. A mountain of stuffed teddy bears in her home represents the difficulties in their marriage, the station reported. Brooks said each time her husband betrayed her, she was given a teddy bear and an apology, the station reported.

"You can't keep doing wrong to people and expect nothing to happen to you," she said.

Randy Brooks is now facing a felony polygamy charge, which is punishable by up to four years in prison.

Local 4 attempted to contact Brooks and his attorney, but the phone calls were not returned. Brooks' second wife also did not want to discuss the possible charges against her husband.

Yeah, we are past the stage where men are supposed to look after women, aren't we?

I "look after" a lot of 'em, depending on the jeans or shorts they're wearin...

Yeah, we are past the stage where men are supposed to look after women, aren't we?

There's no reason for a man to be bound to provide support for a woman beyond that which they mutually agreed to at the start of the union. None whatsoever.

What about the children, if any?

That is a good, accurate comment. Women have become only sexual objects in our society.

What about the children, if any?

If children are going to be a byproduct of the marital union, then it would behoove both parties to spell out the details of custody and support in advance of entering into the union. After all, as has been thoroughly demonstrated, leaving it for the government to define is the worst for all parties.

To you maybe, but I find many of them completely worthless in that respect, even though they may be very good at other endeavors.

How about plain old justice and respect for individual rights?

If you expect to find those things, you need to go to another planet.

I may never achieve them, but so long as I hold them as the ideal, there exists the opportunity to move toward them. I shall not surrender to the mongrel hoardes.

Okay. Here's what you wrote:

Women have become only sexual objects in our society.
I contend that very few women have become nothing but sexual objects, and even then to only a very small segment of society. In other words, I am challenging your generalization.

Yeah, we are past the stage where men are supposed to look after women, aren't we?

We have been past it since the whole Wimmin's Lib thing started - women GOT what they were asking for and now they complain about it.

As I tell my friends, YOU CANNOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. You are either gonna be a Bra-burnin' feminist, or a loving and devoted wife.

Example - My one friend, works from home on the internet for an insurance company, making good money. He husband owns, runs and cleans his own business. But she expects him to come home, cook dinner and help with chores. I don't get that - If I were at home all day, I would get dinner cooked at least.

Me and Yadda "share the wealth", so to speak. We Both work and we both are responsible for household duties. I told him the day I quit working is the day that I will do everything in the house and vice versa.

Your attempt at analogy falls flat. The windmills represented a hallucinated threat that Don (go figure) Quixote felt the need to slay. I don't see individual rights as a threat. Quite the contrary. They are an ideal to work toward.

Keep trying, though.

Janet Reno has no value as a sexual object in my book. However, she might make an excellent source of garden fertilizer.

No, not really. Just one observation, though. It seems that the more regimented and conformist a society becomes, the more perverse the deviations that squeeze out of the seams.

i don't the state should have any say so in this. marriage is supposed to be a private contract.

Oh oh that is politically incorrect.

I like what Elizabeth Joseph wrote for the New York Times some years ago, the headline:
