Flush with optimism after major victories in yesterday’s Congressional elections, House Republicans have promised one of their first orders of business is to attack President Obama’s July 2011 drawdown date in Afghanistan, despite the comparative handicap that the president already disavowed that date months ago.

Rep. Buck McKeon (R – CA), seen as a virtual lock to head the House Armed Services Committee, says that the committee’s top priority will be to continue the war in Afghanistan. McKeon pledged to work directly with commander Gen. David Petraeus to commit more equipment and resources to the war effort.

Upon taking office in 2009, President Obama quickly established Afghanistan as his war, dramatically and repeatedly escalating the US presence despite ever worsening conditions. It seems now that he will face challenges from Republicans looking to make it their war instead, and the race may be on to out-hawk one another on the war, despite poll data showing the war is increasingly unpopular among voters.

"Be sure to vote, now. Voting changes things!" Yes. Slightly. And always for the worse.

Once upon a time when I was in my youth

I found myself wandering into a voting booth

I had to make a choice between a liar and a thief

To lend my name and integrity

in support of a commander in chief

I did my citizen's duty but had to hold my nose

a communist or a fascist, eventually I chose

Not long after that I was headed for Vietnam

The son of a bitch I voted for wanted to drop the bomb

I made it home in one piece while others are still there

POWs and dead men, and the terrible fates they shared

That was last time for me to choose a lying thief

my fellow soldiers families have suffered so much grief

Some say that they feel better and others say they're free

that voting is the medicine that maintains liberty

of course I think that's bullshit some politicians jive

another way of using kids to help corporations thrive

So I think I'll stay home and reject the phoney crap

ignoring all things FEDERAL, it's just a bullshit trap

I'll do it for myself and all my dead comrades

that died for lying bastards when they were only lads.

P.S. I have to say, though, noone, that surrendering our system to interlopers and vandals and enimical forces is not the proper way, imo, to honor those who were taken from us, suffered, and endured in war. Quite the opposite. Our system is being misued. That's no reason to give it over to the abusers. At least give them some busywork to bog them down by continuing to exercise your right to vote, even if all you do is write-in Mickey Mouse as a candidate or something like that -- or, better yet, someone you'd like to see win, however likely it is that they can't under the hijacked circumstances. Let's have our own transitional elections -- right now. I'm going to vote for Ron Paul to be President, maybe everybody from the Tenth Amendment Center and Nullify Now for the House and Senate, Judge Andrew Napolitano and Edwin Viera, Jr. for Supreme Court nominees. Your turn. We have to stop wasting time on being down in the dumps and start setting things aright. Some might laugh us off or decline to take those positions as substitutes for the rogues who have wreaked havoc from our D.C. offices, but hey, some might accept and that would be so great, wouldn't it? It could happen but probably not if everyone who might want to try gets talked into doing nothing instead.

Not long after that I was headed for Vietnam

During that disgraceful debacle , I worked for the FAA at a regional airport. Nearly all of us were WW2 and Korean veterans. Hardly a week passed by but what some young kid made his last flight home. We watched, week after week, year after year. There was never any discussion, just stone cold silence as we watched the unloadings.

Tears yes, profane under the breath language, yes. All of us had been there before.

It became so common place that they would hide the hearse and honor guard until the last moment.
