Valparaiso - A recenty sworn-in Hebron reserve police officer shot himself in the leg Wednesday while unloading his gun before going inside a school to pick up his 5-year old son.

Daniel Glickauf, 29, of South Haven, was sworn in as a reserve officer on Monday. On Saturday, he completed the required 40-hour prebasic training with the Hebron Police Department, Chief Steve Sibbrell said.

That training, conducted in-house, includes firearms training, Sibbrell said, although reserve officers continue to get further training once they are working with the force.

"It's just an unfortunate accident," Sibbrell said, noting Glickauf had surgery on his leg on Wednesday and probably was still in the hospital.

Glickhauf, who shattered his femur into eight peices when the gun fired, will not physically be able to work with the police force for some time. And after he's healed, "He's going to have to go through a department review," Sibbrell said.

Porter hospital in Valparaiso, where Glickauf was taken following the shooting, did not release his condition or confirm if he is a patient there.

According to the police report, Glickauf went to First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso, 3401 Valparaiso St., to pick up his 5-year-old son from school. He was in his vehicle in the parking lot just before 2:30 p.m. when he decided not to alarm any other parents by walking in with his firearm on his hip. He also did not want to leave a loaded gun unattended in the vehicle.

He ejected the magazine from the gun, ejected the round from the chamber, and reinserted the ejected round back into the magazine, he told police. He then attempted to put the magazine back in the gun but it didn't fit right. Not being familiar with the Smith & Wesson Springfield .40-caliber handgun, although he said it was his personal gun that he also uses for work, "he thought if he pulled the trigger the magazine would seat prperly," Glickauf told police.

Instead, the gun fired and the bullet went into his upper left thigh.

That does not make sense to me.

That does not make sense to me.

For some reason those who shoot themselves tend to fib to minimize their feeling of stupidity.

I'm guessing that he either jacked the slide first then pulled the trigger or the slide was open when he inserted the mag. (Less likely because the mag would have probably gone in and locked in place easily) Or, he could have ejected the first round while the mag was still in the gun not thinking that he had just replaced the round with another, then ejected the mag without having locked the slide open and visually inspecting the chamber. (I teach students to visually check and then insert their pinky tip into the spout the way some vets were taught with govt .45s)

In any case the fact that the firearm wasn't pointed in a safe direction and there was a round in the tube is the best evidence that this was another *ND by an inexperienced shooter. The S&W .40 has a decocking lever so there was no reason to pull the trigger if in fact the hammer was cocked after he ejected the first round and the mag. (the article didn't say if his pistol was DAO)

It's quite possible that A) he jacked the slide then removed the mag and B) he pulled the trigger instead of using the decocking lever believing the gun was empty. He apparently didn't stop to think because if he had A) the gun would not have been loaded, and B) his leg bone wouldn't be in 8 pieces. If this was how the scenario went down then the deux deux about the mag not seating properly was just his way of trying to justify having pulled the trigger.

*ND-not an AD-a Negligent Discharge cannot be excused by labeling it "Accidental", according to **Jeff Cooper.

The "Chief Of Police For Life" of a nearby small town leg shot himself his first week out of the academy on a traffic stop. The motorist made a sudden threatening move and the chief slapped leather and discharged his firearm before ever clearing the holster.

Needless to say he blamed the firearm. It was sent to the appropriate testing labs and the weapon checked out fine. But to this day nearly 30 years later the lying ass cop is still in denial.

**The now deceased Lt. Col Jeff Cooper (Chairman Jeff, Dr. Death) is considered the father of combat handgunning. He claimed to have at least one leg shot trainee at each of his training sessions at GUNSITE ACADEMY, his elite training facilities for military and police, PI's, private security and citizens of sterling reputation and character with appropriate references. Those NDs are almost always the result of quick draws where the students don't keep clear of the triggers until the weapons are,.... well, you know.

For a newly minted reserve officer to shoot himself without any external stimuli to factor in or fault can be downright emasculating.....In fact if I was G_D I'd say, "Okay fella, you were issued that badge and them gonads by mistake so, hand 'em over...."

Exactly. If you don't have a clear bore, the slide is not locked, and you can't see light through it, it is NOT clear.

This guy was a friggin' idiot.
