War, War, War See other War, War, War Articles Title: End war, eliminate nukes - Ted Turner Turner Calls For End Of War And Elimination Of Nuclear Weapons (RTTNews) - Ted Turner, the founder of CNN and numerous other cable networks, said Tuesday that his goal is to end war and rid the nation of nuclear weapons. Turner, speaking at a conference broadly centered on improving mobile heath technology, said that the increasing interconnectedness of the world makes war increasingly undesirable. "War is so destructive and so ugly," he said. "The world is so interconnected [today].
We can't afford war." Turner said that increases in mobile technology and the broadcasting of new information and images through mobile technology is making it increasingly difficult for nations to conduct military campaigns. The Israeli campaign against Hezbollah, Turner said, was a prime example, in that Israel had to stop bombing because it "looked too ugly on television." The hope, Turner said, is that the world will turn to negotiation and institutions like the United Nations to "negotiate our way out" of potential conflicts. "That's going to be our way out of the problems we have today," he said. "That's the hope, that we abandon using violence and negotiate our way out." Turner almost seemed personally offended by the inefficiency involved in armed conflicts, noting that, despite large amounts of U.S. military spending, the country is unable to win a victory over the Taliban in Afghanistan. "The most pernicious part about war is the amount of money that goes into it," he said. Turner jokingly suggested that the U.S. sell aircraft carriers to China in lieu of the U.S. debt. "What good are aircraft carriers in Afghanistan, or Iraq for that matter," he said. Turner said that he hoped to expand the role of the United Nations in conflict resolution, adding that he founded the United Nations Foundation as a way to involve non-governmental organizations and the business community in supporting the goals of the UN. Turner said the idea behind the foundation had originally come when the U.S. fell about two years and $1 billion behind in its U.N. dues. "The original idea was that I would pick up the tab for the U.S.," he said. "The first idea was to be like a repo man" and buy the debt at some fraction on the dollar and then sue the government for collections. However, Turner said, his lawyers informed him that an individual couldn't sue the government for those purposes. But the charitable work that he has set up through the foundation, Turner said, is beginning to show results. "The private sector and the NGO community
everyone was somewhat skeptical about what we were doing but they were skeptical about CNN and the Cartoon network," he said. "It took several years to do, just like it took several years for people to accept that CNN was there to stay."
