For years I have been picking up metal off of the ground when I walk my dog -- aluminum and tin cams.

The aluminum cans are almost always Bud Light and Pepsi which hoosiers through out of the pickup trucks.

I take the stuff to the recycling center every three months and get about $50, which fills up my van and also gets me a quart of oil.

Today, when I took my dog for a walk, I found three Bud Light bottle caps and a nusty nail, which goes into the steel/iron box.

Wire is the most profitable, since it's copper. I don't find much of that, but as for the Bud Light/Pepsi...the hicks must love that stuff. They throw the cans into the street, sidewalks, and people's front yards.

Why does your van use so much oil? Can't you personally fix the issue? My GOD, your garage and/or street or driveway must appear as a local slum.

Why does your van use so much oil?

It doesn't. I just save that quart when I get around to changing the oil.

The standard, long-standing oil change interval as recommended by most leading automotive maintenance organizations and mechanics is every 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. This particular oil change interval has been recommended for many decades, and is still widely adhered to today.

OK .. with the above in mind lets review your post:

It doesn't. I just save that quart when I get around to changing the oil.

And in light of your original article...

I take the stuff to the recycling center every three months and get about $50, which fills up my van and also gets me a quart of oil.

So either you don't properly maintain your van on a regular basis OR your van only uses 1 quart of oil during an oil change. Which is it?

I change the oil every three months. I get one quart free, along with a tank of gas.

Now, that I believe I understand your cryptic over-generalized income of $50 bucks AND the fact:

I get one quart free, along with a tank of gas.

After you add up all your time picking the trash up over a three month period and driving it to some reclamation centre for monetary redemption and then your own time getting a "fill-up" and the oil change ... don't you feel cheated about what is "free"?

I understand .... and you are a fantastick environmentalist ensuring a clean neighbourhood and surrounding countryside despite the irresponsibility taht is demonstrated by some "hicks". You need an ATTA_BOYZturtle right on the hardshell back.

Still, your hard work (no matter how you phrase it because you must carry a bag and method of picking up the cans so as to ensure your healthy life-style is unfettered with a hospital bill... at the very least, you use rubber gloves, 'eh?) and personal initiative is not commensurate to $50 bucks over a three month period of time, nor is it free, correct?

BTW, you pay taxes, correct? Where is the local government helping you out?

I pick them up off of the ground while walking my dog. Pickup-driving hicks throw beer cans all over the place.

On average that is 11 cans a day, assuming a nickel/can per day over a ninety day period of time.

After you haul this garbage to your house and accumulate this HUGE trash heap of 1000 cans, wire, other metals and so forth ... you must organize it in such a way as to efficiently redeem the same for cash. [Correct?]

Do you place all this "treasure" into bins with obvious recognizable indicators of methods for differentiation so as to simplify your time in organizing ... or is it all in one HUGE heap? Is the heap or heaps or bins in the backyard taking up room and precious viewing space of the world around you? How much time does it cost you to haul this treasure into van for redemption and a "fillup" for gas?

My GOD, 1000 cans accumulated over a three month period seems to me you are a pack-ratter. Do place this treasure close to your home so can watch it's value grow everyday? Or do you place upon your property in such a way to obscure your wealth so it can't be taken by local thieves and bandits?

Do you collect paper, too?

Damn good question.

Turtle wastes my time on his personal foolish and insipid threads. So, as opposed to ignoring the guy, I decided to ask him more than one question on this thread.

If you follow the thread up until right now, he hasn't returned as he is once again off looking for empty beer cans thrown out of pick-up trucks by his local "hick" neighbours; I wonder why he bothers limiting his attention to those fools as opposed to the spectrum of irresponsible people that also screw up and destroy the environment. Never-the-less, I don't think he cares about the fifty dollar reward he manifests over a three month period of time for all of his hard work and intrepid diligence. I think he is looking for a genie in one of those thousands of empty beer cans....

If you want to find bottle caps and nails, get a metal detector. You will dig up loads of them, and the occasional ring / coin. It's a good way to kill time too. If you're persistent, you can do very well, if you can research your hunting grounds.

Yep. course it only has 280,000 miles on it.

My registration is up this month and it will have to be smogged this year. Even if it passes on emissions it won't pass because the engine light is on. I don't plan on sinking any money into this car.

Turtle's threads are usually pure nonsense and completely unsubstantive, generally speaking.

They require a sense of humor. It's a serious defect of character not to have one. It saves one from Konspiracy Kookery, i.e., remote-controlled airplanes, explosives in the WTC, three shooters on Kennedy, the moon landings being shot on a stage, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

If you have maintained your truck since the beginning of time with recommended methods of tests, observations and maintenance intervals AND you still enjoy the vehicle AND there are no obvious problems why buy a replacement vehicle?

When you buy a new vehicle, typically you have HUGE changes in costs for vehicle registration and insurance while giving away your trade-in; dealers take your trade-in for resale unless they can make a profit and that means YOU take the hit on their appraisal value.

I think you said that you have already replaced the transmission which is a major job.

But my thinking is that w/ a new tranny, when the engine goes, why not simply buy a new/used engine and essentially a new lease on life re: the truck.

A good value is to consider a rebuilt engine (evaluate a new engine but that may not be possible since you have an 11 year old truck) with some of the earlier features you have (power steering pump replaced and all that other stuff).

I don't get all upset and defensive over such Internet idiocy.

That's very good .... you get an overall grade of FAILURE, however because you can't support or otherwise substantiate your earlier post as I already explained.
