PARIS (Reuters) - French President Jacques Chirac has joined the country's push to boost biofuel use -- converting his own luxury Citroen C6 saloon and many of his officials' cars to run on cleaner-burning biodiesel.

Fuel pumps at his Elysee palace in central Paris have been modified to provide the alternative fuel.

"The president's car runs with biodiesel made from rapeseed, as do half the Elysee cars," a spokeswoman said on Friday.

France, Europe's biggest agricultural producer, has announced plans to become Europe's leading biofuel maker by 2010, when it wants green fuels to fill seven percent of total consumption.

France produces both biodiesel, made from mostly rapeseed, and ethanol derived from sugar beet or cereals.

France's powerful farm lobby is pushing the new technology, and Chirac is a former agriculture minister and champion of farmers' causes.

They have that really cool train too.

One if by land, two if by sea...how many if they are already here?

High speed trains are possible in France for a variety of reasons, none of which I understand. Japan can build high speed trains because of cronyism and sheer necessity, I think the French just thought it would be cool.

Those Frenchies are not done either.

Massive investment for expansion continues to be approved for the French high speed network, which is rivalled only by Japan for its quality and intensity of service. New schemes will ensure construction continues at least 2010, extending further into neighbouring countries.

France has been in the vanguard of high-speed passenger rail travel since the 1950s, and covers long distances at speeds of up to 300km/h (186mph). Since the first high speed line was built between the hub capital of Paris and Lyon in 1981, the TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse) has pushed into Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, the UK and Italy.

I understand, that they've used nuclear power in a more efficient and safer way, by building many small ones, instead of a few huge ones like we do.

And, they are building a fusion plant.
