Lieberman to Push for Iran War Resolution?

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

By: Jamal Abdi - Opinion

Senator Joe Lieberman on Tuesday signaled that the incoming Congress may consider endorsing war with Iran.

Senator Joe Lieberman on Tuesday signaled that the incoming Congress may consider endorsing war with Iran.

Speaking before the Foreign Policy Initiative, a neoconservative think tank formed by many of the chief architects of the Iraq war, Lieberman was questioned by accomplished war advocate Bill Kristol about how the new Congress will factor into Iran policy.

Lieberman said that Congress would focus on pressing the Administration on sanctions, but also suggested Congress may decide to formally endorse military options against Iran. According to Lieberman, Congress’ role should include “that we express what I believe is actually there in the Congress and I think it's there in the American people. Nobody wants to use military force against Iran, but there is a base, a broad bipartisan base of support if the Commander in Chief comes to a point where he thinks that’s necessary.”

MR. KRISTOL: And so Congress could --

SENATOR LIEBERMAN: Could express that in some way, but I think that's not tomorrow, but it may be down the road depending on -- I mean, when you think about it, by January it will have been six months since the sanctions began to be applied to Iran, and it's fair to say that there's been no voluntary limitation of their nuclear weapons program.

While Lieberman was careful to say that such a Congressional action endorsing war would be in “support” of the President if he decides force is necessary, the pro-war crowd is clearly trying to turn up the pressure on Obama and is unlikely to be satisfied with compromise. Republicans have already demonstrated a willingness to undermine the President on foreign policy, with incoming Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s suggestion to Benjamin Netanyahu that Republicans would be a “check” on Obama as just the latest example. Earlier this year, House Republicans introduced a resolution endorsing Israeli strikes against Iran, undercutting the authority of the President and his civilian and military leadership to prevent such an attack by sending a signal that Congress would stand with Israel instead of the President.

Lieberman, who recently joined his Senate colleague Lindsey Graham to “up the rhetorical ante” on Iran by endorsing the military option against Iran, buys into the argument offered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week that escalating war rhetoric against Iran should be part of US policy. This is the next step in paving the path to war—whether under Obama or, as was the case with Iraq in the 90’s, to tee up war for the next President. Once the war threat is out there, it doesn’t go away.

Such advice defies pushback from Defense Secretary Robert Gates and dire warnings about the consequences of strikes from US military leaders. It ignores a recent USIP-Stimson report that states, “Even veiled allusions to the ‘military option’ reinforce those Iranian hardliners who argue that Iran requires nuclear weapons to deter the US, and protect Tehran’s security and freedom of action.” And it flies in the face of Iranian democracy activists and human rights defenders who say that war can only undercut their cause.

Lieberman argued yesterday in the Wall Street Journal that Obama can seize an opportunity to forge a “bipartisan foreign policy” by teaming up with new Republican leadership in Congress to thwart “anti-war Democrats and isolationist Republicans.” But it is unclear how long Lieberman and the pro-war crowd will be willing to wait before pushing to further undercut the President by signaling that Congress is ready for war with Iran.

Poster Comment:

what an insanity that has gripped our national leaders in that they openly talk about creating war against Iran - knowing full well that other nations have told us that this could lead to global war. Iran hasn't attacked other nations without first being attacked for hundreds of years. In the 1980's they endured a horrible war that cost the lives of 600,000 Iranians (plus 400,000 Iraqis). and that war was started because the US asked Saddam Hussein to start the war. We did that in revenge for them taking some of our citizens hostages, later they were all released. They had a radical group among them take those hostages because we overthrew their government in 1953 and they deeply resented it. After the war with Iraq in the 1980's was over we sunk some of their small naval vessels plus shot down a commercial passenger jet airliner. They said it was an accident, but the US Navy does not make such mistakes.

shot down a commercial passenger jet airliner.

The USS Vincennes, was the ship I believe. I was debating an extreme right-wing bush fan about the reasons that NORAD did not stop the Pentagon plane,he said that the USA does not shoot down civilian aircraft, never had and never would. When I assured him that the US did,in fact, shoot down an Iranian airliner, pandemonium ensued... I was a liar,a traitor, and an unpatriotic puke, swore he had my IP address and would see me arrested for shaking babies till they rattled. I told him to hop a plane

that was quite a debate you were in. You did a good job in participating.

It was right on the news that we shot their passenger jet down and they showed photos of some of the bodies of the civilians who were mostly recovered. I'm pretty sure it was a large jet with 200-300 passengers. they were all killed.

The captain of the Vicennes was inteviewed and he insisted they thought they were being attacked and had to respond. They saw on the radar what was the passenger jet and thought it was a military attack, that was his story and he stuck to it even under questioning before Congress.

I guess the US Navy needs to practice with its radar to distinguish those passenger jets from military attack aircraft.

whoever believes the Navy story is an idiot. They know what the passenger jets look like on radar. They know what the jet fighters look like. This shoot-down of the jetliner occurred right after the US Navy sunk some small naval vessels of the Iranians. It was during a time when the Iraq-Iran war was being concluded. We had taken Iraq's side in that war as we asked them to do it, we funded them, we gave them chemical weapons to fight that war even. Perhaps as our side lost we were just getting in some licks of our own in warning to them.

Remember about 5 years ago there was a US Air Force jet flying near China and it accidentally knocked a Chinese military jet out of the sky? The 2 jets were flying very close to one another as in a game of chicken, and somehow the US jet knocked into the Chinese jet and the Chinese jet did not recover from that, it went down. an accident.

Remember when in the 1999 war on Serbia? The US accidentally bombed the Chinese embassy? We had been bombing targets in their capital and we had an asset on the ground putting a laser's red dot onto targets. Our government said the type of weapon used required the person on the ground to guide the weapon in. So somebody actually pointed the laser at the Chinese embassy to accomplish the task. and then we said we accidentally targeted the chinese embassy. It turns out that we only destroyed one section of the embassy, but that was destroyed very effectively. There was a chinese married couple killed in that event. Those 2 people were technicians brought in to operate equipment that the Chinese were using to aid the Serb military effort against us. We knocked out that equipment. But it was an accident.

Our people in Washington actually said at one point that the chinese embassy was not on the map we used and so we didn't know it was there. But our government revealed that the attack required a person on the ground pointing at the embassy. A person who evidently was so stupid they didn't know a major embassy building when they looked at it.

These people deserve what's coming. The rest of us will get it in the neck right along with them.

This is one of two mainstream documentaries on the downing of IR 655. This one is by National Geographic. It follows, by and large, the US story on this. Anyway, it shows that the US does shoot down airliners. You can mail the link to your Lameblow listening friend.

You must remember... the evil Ashkenazim want to spread the power/control of Israel from the River of Egypt (Nile) to the Euphrates as quickly as they can. They believe by doing this before Jesus returns that they have proven the New Testament to be fiction.

That would be kind of screwy, wouldn't it?

How they can apprehend his return and believe him to be boiling in a vat of semen forever is beyond me.
