Yesterday I received a five dollar silver certificate in change from the store. It says I can redeem this in silver from the Treasury upon demand. If I give this to Tim Geithner will he give me dollars in silver quarters? Or will he five these copper post Kennedy quarters?

Do people buy old paper money? This is too well worn for collectors.

No

There was a cut-off date for redeeming silver a long time ago, you're SOL.

Do people buy old paper money?

Yes, but unless the bill is mint, it's numismatic value is low

Tim Geithner will give you some brass knuckles once he gets his goon squad up and running in Chicago.

No, he will not. People have tried to trade their silver certificates for actual money but all they ever got offered was more pieces of paper. Now if that silver certificate was in mint condition some collector would probably give you a good price for it. But being that it is very worn it wouldn't be worth much to a collector. And for you, it will buy you the same amount of groceries as five federal reserve notes euphemistically referred to as "dollars" (which they are not).

He (Gordon Duff) also implies that forcibly removing Obama, a Constitution-hating, on-the-down-low, crackhead Communist, is an attack on America, Mom, and apple pie. I swear these military people are worse than useless. Just look around at the condition of the country and tell me if they have fulfilled their oaths to protect the nation from all enemies foreign and domestic.

The govt stopped redeeming these bills with silver around 1968.

The only special value of this bill is to collectors and (depending on how beat up it was) a coin collector store may offer you $6 or $7 (in FRNs) for the $5 silver cert. Otherwise, for all other purposes, it's just five dollars.

My son-in-law tried to spend a 50 dollar silver certificate at a store and they called the police on him, who called in the Feds. They all thought it was counterfeit.

If the coin store or a private collector doesn't want it, it's yours.
