FBI stopped Portland bomb suspect from taking job before sting

Though it's a controversial assertion, observers often point to a link between acts of terrorism and poverty.

In the case of Mohamed Osman Mohamud, the 19-year-old arrested Friday for allegedly trying to blow up an Oregon Christmas tree lighting ceremony, the FBI itself may have created that link.

According to the New York Times, the FBI placed Mohamud on a terror watch list, making it impossible for the young man to fly to Alaska to take a summer job. It was only after Mohamud was blocked from taking the job in June of this year that the FBI -- which had been monitoring him since 2009 -- made contact with the suspect.

The Times reports:

The FBI’s surveillance started in August 2009 after agents intercepted his e-mails with a man he had met in Oregon who had returned to the Middle East, according to a law enforcement official who described the man as a recruiter for terrorism. According to the affidavit, the man had moved to Yemen and then northwest Pakistan, a center of terrorism activity.

Mr. Mohamud was then placed on a watch list and stopped at the Portland airport in June 2010 when he tried to fly to Alaska for a summer job.

Later in June, aware of Mr. Mohamud’s frustrated attempts to receive training as a jihadist overseas, an undercover agent first made contact with him, posing as an associate of the man in Pakistan. On the morning of July 30, the F.B.I. first met with Mr. Mohamud in person to initiate the sting operation. The revelation adds fuel to the fire of critics who argue the FBI's sting operation manufactured -- rather than stopped -- a domestic terrorist.

"So, after blocking his domestic travel to accept work in Alaska, the FBI began their aggressive contacts with this ‘terrorist’ who’d seen his employment prospects dashed. Certainly, a newly unemployable youngster would be more amenable to their entreaties, right?" writes Teddy Partridge at FireDogLake, who first flagged the Times report.

Salon.com's Glenn Greenwald writes:

It may very well be that the FBI successfully and within legal limits arrested a dangerous criminal intent on carrying out a serious Terrorist plot that would have killed many innocent people, in which case they deserve praise. Court-approved surveillance and use of undercover agents to infiltrate terrorist plots are legitimate tactics when used in accordance with the law.

But it may also just as easily be the case that the FBI -- as they've done many times in the past -- found some very young, impressionable, disaffected, hapless, aimless, inept loner; created a plot it then persuaded/manipulated/entrapped him to join, essentially turning him into a Terrorist; and then patted itself on the back once it arrested him for having thwarted a "Terrorist plot" which, from start to finish, was entirely the FBI's own concoction.

Federal agents noticed Mohamud in December 2009, after he allegedly communicated with someone in northwest Pakistan, "an area known to harbor terrorists," according to the FBI affidavit.

Agents claimed that Mohamud revealed himself to be the author of a bizarre 2009 article for the English-language "Jihad Recollections" magazine. The story made headlines for its comical images of masked fighters helping each other exercise.

In the months following, agents ostensibly worked him up to the point where he was willing to flip the switch on a car bomb. Agents even took Mohamud to a secluded location to blow up a bomb they placed in a backpack, allegedly as a test run.

Mohamud was arrested by FBI agents and Portland police around 5:40 pm Friday, after he attempted to remotely detonate what he believed to be an explosives-laden van.

there are many other cases where the same pattern occurred. Undercover agents promoted terrorism, they try to talk people into doing terrorism.

the big case that is an example was the 1992 bombing of the World Trade Center's parking garage. In that case an undercover agent of the FBI testified in court that he himself had talked this group into the crime and that he himself was the person who made the bomb and set the bomb. He testified that his FBI handler preferred for him to make an actual bomb rather than a fake bomb. This was a terror event that did great property damage and the government says killed 6 people. And it was done by an undercover agent. then these other people who had not actually done it, but agreed to help in the crime, were put in jail for the rest of their lives.

Simple solution: Don't agree to follow along with criminal activity.

The thing is, intent is the key piece of everything. If someone is predisposed to criminal intent, someone is going to come along and encourage that so they can get another successful arrest and prosecution.

As Nancy Reagan would have put it, "Just Say No".

The problem is that the feds are putting the stupid and inept in prison. The smarter ones would never fall for such a simple-minded sting.

Several problems I see. First, there are very few if any terror events that are un-aided by the government. Second, the undercover agents spend a large amount of effort trying to persuade people to go along with terror plans. Third, the government may not be honest about these people's real participation. Take this fellow arrested in Oregon. He called a phone number. That was his crime. The government says he thought he was blowing up a bomb when he did this? Did he really? Did he make the bomb? Did he set the bomb? They say specifically that he only called a phone number. How can we trust the government that he thought he was killing people when he did that?

I've read about a lot of cases. There are also cases where the government goes to great lengths to find a muslim guilty of something. and when you look at the actual crime it is either extremely minor or non-existant and yet the person gets a long jail time.

One muslim doctor in New York got a very long prison sentence because he filled out some forms incorrectly and essentially billed for a nurse's wage at the rate for doctors. It was a mistake and yet he was charged with fraud. And this justified like over a 20 year sentence. and there's been other cases where huge prison sentences are handed out for nothing.

True, and we also know that LEOs absolutely LOVE the stupid criminals.

Didn't there used to be a TV show dedicated to them? The ones who use their ID at a bank robbery and leave it behind -- those kinds? Or the one who holds up a Stop And Rob and then drops a fiver with fingerprints on it to pay for a pack of smokes or tip the clerk?

Those types deserve to do some jail time. I don't think anyone could claim that armed robbery is excusable.

Likewise, a dumbass who runs around whining about how he wants to blow up a bunch of Americans as the Portland bomber did -- deserves a little attention from someone testing the waters to see if its just noise or not.

I don't think anyone would disagree that there are crimes deserving of a nice long prison sentence. Where people seem to disagree is how to get there and what constitutes a crime that deserves a long prison sentence.

With regards to this clown, he deserves what he is going to get for being dumb enough to play along with his delusion of grandeur.
