State Dept Warning Students Not to Read, Share WikiLeaks Spokeswoman Says Commenting on WikiLeaks Not a Good Move for Any Citizen by Jason Ditz, December 03, 2010 Email This | Print This | Share This | Antiwar Forum

Columbia University’s Office of Career Service is said to have passed around an email warning students that if they read WikiLeaks or make comments related to the releases it would render them ineligible for any government jobs in the future, based on a warning sent by a former student working at the State Department.

State Department spokeswoman Nicole Thompson insisted the warning wasn’t an official Department directive but added that making public comments or posting links to WikiLeaks content wasn’t “a good move for any US citizen.”

Efforts across the US government to restrict access to the documents are having limited success, although Sen. Joe Lieberman (I – CT) did succeed in getting the WikiLeaks website removed for a few hours following a threatening phone call to Amazon.com.

Beyond the State Department, the US military is also said to be trying to curb access to the content among active duty personnel, with attempts to visit any media website from the military’s open network resulting in a warning message not to read anything related to the WikiLeaks release. The Social Security Administration has also sent an alert to all its employees warning them that reading anything related to the WikiLeaks release could subject them to “federal criminal statutes for unlawful access to or transmission of classified information.”

Even the Library of Congress is getting into the game, with attempts to visit the website at the Library resulting in a warning that the site is “malicious content” and has been blocked.

I think that this will make people angry, but not me. I think that this is hilarious!

They are scared to death of one man (plus his crew) and one website!

I love what wikileaks is doing, I support them 100%, and Nicky at the state dept can suck my balls.

Notice how Ms. Thompson has subtly undermined the concept of the first amendment; the power of the state is watching you.

I noticed.

I just don't give a damn.

And when other interested parties are told this, I bet they don't give a damn either. In fact, it might have the opposite effect and bring in more interest in wikileaks. When the entire .gov is against you, you just can't buy that kind of publicity.

I don't think the US government directly operates in a way that is against; now, that is not to say the government doesn't but I want to point out that most of the cables that are on the Wikileaks.ch server are benign, in of themselves.

To me, what is extraordinary are the lengths the US government goes to preventing the data, i.e it is largely classified. But more than even that point, I think the US government has over-reached it's inherent power of meddling in every sovereign nation's affairs when it should be directly looking out for the American People.

As you know, most of the wikileaks cables are about international affairs. Hey! What happened to domestic affairs? Where are the tax cuts to stimulate the economy? Where is the "jobs creation" bill? And so forth? Now, wikileaks may not have access to that data but the scope of wikileaks data reveals a decided absence about America's domestic issues which re-enforces the perspective of "America's position of world cop."

There is an apparent disconnect about America's governance with its own people. And that is why you see the political pendulum swing more wildly each and every election.

Fully understood still American domestic policy is hemorrhaging and these wikileaks documents underscore the abusive and expensive meddling of US international considerations forcing other nations policies as a function of US interests. You almost wonder what these politicians and bureaucrats are saying behind our own backs, 'eh? Something to the tune of the infamous Marie Antoinette cliche: Let them eat cake!

Isn't anyone aware of the forever playing and skipped record of and about politicians flashing bright smiles prior to the various and respective elections and then you rarely hear from them again .... they are essentially sucked into the same black_hole their predecessor was and as a result there can not be change in America.

I want to point out, that the idea of "change" is a political euphemism to me. The only "change" that happens in America is we are increasingly losing our individual rights, liberties and freedoms besides our own dignity. And as a result, when a new election approaches, I cringe knowing that we are in additional peril than we already know.

No, you see all we have to do is vote Democrat and/or Republican (depending on which partisan buttlicker you speak with) and things will get better.

Perhaps this is the greatest myth we ever fell for. WHO SAYS SO! Why can't we write in our own candidate of choice, and let the winner take all. Piss on the Party vote.
