More soldiers than ever are on drugs that have been linked to suicide and violent behavior. In 2009 there were 160 active duty suicides, 239 suicides within the total Army including the Reserves, 146 active duty deaths from drug overdoses and high risk behavior and 1,713 suicide attempts. In addition to suicide, other out-of-character behavior like domestic violence is known to erupt from the drugs. More troops are dying by their own hand than in combat, according to an Army report titled "Health Promotion, Risk Reduction, Suicide Prevention." Not only that, but 36 percent of the suicides were troops who were never deployed. The unprecedented suicide rates are accompanied by an unprecedented rise in psychoactive drug rate among active duty-aged troops, 18 to 34, which is up 85 percent since 2003, according to the military health plan Tricare. Since 2001, 73,103 prescriptions for Zoloft have been dispensed, 38,199 for Prozac, 17,830 for Paxil and 12,047 for Cymbalta says Tricare 2009 data, which includes family prescriptions. All of the drugs carry a suicide warning label. In addition to the leap in SSRI antidepressants, prescriptions for the anticonvulsants Topamax and Neurontin rose 56 percent in the same group since 2005, says Navy Times -- drugs the FDA warned last year double suicidal thinking in patients. In fact, 4,994 troops at Fort Bragg are on antidepressants right now, says the Fayetteville Observer. Six-hundred-sixty-four are on an antipsychotics and "many soldiers take more than one type of medication." Of course, depression itself is a risk factor for suicide, so it is not always possible to tell if the disease or the drug is at fault. But many believe the dramatic and tandem rises in suicide rates and psychoactive drug rates are correlated. "Intuitively, it just tells you that there's a connection," Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md. told the National Journal this month. Troops may also be taking Chantix, an antismoking drug so linked to violence and self-harm that Secretary of the VA James Peake was forced to defend its use, even in drug trials, before the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs in 2008. "If you know the drug induces suicidal thoughts," an unappeased Committee chair Bob Filner D-Ca. asked Rep. Filner, "Why don't you just stop?" Even widely prescribed asthma drugs like Singulair and Advair are linked to suicide, says the FDA, and have been cited in young people's deaths. And who knows what happens when the drugs are mixed with mood stabilizers, insomnia and pain pills and antianxiety and antipsychotic pills -- combinations that have never been tested for safety? In June Marine Times reported 32 deaths on prescription drugs in Warrior Transition Units (WTUs) since 2007 and said an internal review "found the biggest risk factor may be putting a soldier on numerous drugs simultaneously, a practice known as polypharmacy." Links between suicide and even murder-suicide and SSRI and SNRI antidepressants have been long recognized. Of course, not everyone on SSRIs will be a suicide risk; but the danger is serious enough that the automatic and “knee-jerk” military prescribing of the drugs should be investigated. Traci Johnson, a healthy 19-year-old with no mental problems, hanged herself during Lilly trials of Cymbalta in the drugmaker's own clinic in 2004. Red Lake shooter Jeff Weise, who killed 10 on a Minnesota Indian reservation in 2005, had just upped his Prozac. And the Virginia Tech shooter, Cho Seung-Hui, was also on psychoactive medications, according to news reports. Americans have doubled their antidepressants since 1999 so that 10 percent of the population, or 27 million, now take them. Suicides have climbed by 5 percent since 1999 and 16 percent in middle-aged adults. (The suicide rate actually doubled in Japan since SSRIs were introduced.) In fact, the high percentage of civilian suicides on psychoactive drugs is probably the clearest indication that military life is not the only cause of the shocking troop suicides: In September alone, there were 18 civilian suicides, 11 murders, two murder suicides and other violence linked to people who were using or had used antidepressants, according to published reports. A 54-year-old respiratory patient with a breathing tube and an oxygen tank and no previous criminal record held up a bank in Mobile. She had gone off her antidepressants. An enraged man in Australia, also off his antidepressants, chased his mailman and threatened to cut his throat...for bringing him junk mail. And a 58-year-old Amarillo man with no criminal history tried to abduct three people, killing an Oklahoma grandmother in the process. He had "an antidepressant in his blood," said police. Also in the 30-day period, a 60-year-old grandmother in Seattle killed three family members and herself; a disc jockey in Bristol, UK set himself on fire; and an Exeter, UK man was determined to have stabbed himself in the heart. All were on antidepressants. Finally, in the month of September, legal proceedings began against two mothers and a father charged with killing their own children. Over 4,000 published reports of violent and bizarre behavior of people affected by antidepressants on the web archive ssristories.com reveal the same out-of-character violence and self harm in civilians that is currently seen in the military. Twenty people set themselves on fire. Ten bit their victims (including a biter who was sleepwalking and a woman, on Prozac, who bit her 87-year-old mother into critical condition). Three men in their 70s and 80s attacked their wives with hammers. Many stab their victims obsessively — one even stabbed furniture after killing his wife — and 14 parents drowned their children, a crime seldom heard of before the 2001 Andrea Yates case. (Yates drowned her five children while she was taking the antidepressant Effexor, which manufacturer Wyeth (now Pfizer) "issued no public warning" about, says the Associated Press.) Then there's the North Carolina pilot on Zoloft who sang, "I'm going down for the last time," into the cockpit voice recorder before he crashed his plane in June. And the mayor of Coppell, Texas, Jayne Peters, who killed herself and her daughter in July over the grief of losing her husband. Police found antidepressants at the home. Why don't doctors and media outlets publicize the names of these volatile drugs? It's a good question, said Gary Kohls, a Minnesota family practitioner, in an oped written after Iraq veteran Matthew Magdzas killed his pregnant wife, their 13-month-old daughter, their dogs and himself in Wisconsin in August. "Nobody in the media has, to my knowledge, had the courage to report what the drugs were, nor have they interviewed the physician or his clinic to find out the rationale for prescribing drugs that have common violence-inducing effects (with black box warnings stating that in the prescribing information)," he writes. "Therefore nothing has been learned from this important teachable moment, probably because revealing the common reality of prescription drug-induced violence would be economically harmful for the sacred cows of Big Pharma and Big Medicine." David Healy, a psychiatrist and professor at Cardiff University School of Medicine in Wales, has authored several books about the connections. "Prozac and other SSRIs can lead to suicide," he said in a lecture at the University of Toronto. "These drugs may have been responsible for one death for every day that Prozac has been on the market in North America." And psychiatrist and expert witness Dr. Peter Breggin specifically called on the military to “curtail the use of these drugs and rely instead on psychotherapeutic and educational processes that have already proved effective,” in a recent oped. “There is “profound danger of prescribing drugs that cause impulsivity, hostility and suicidality to heavily armed young men and women under stress on active military duty." He also called for “additional research in the military and the VA concerning suicide and violence caused by antidepressants.” Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va. has also zeroed in on medicated troops in Senate hearings this year, calling the fact that one of every six troops are on psychoactive drugs "pretty astounding and also very troubling." And Retired Col. Bart Billings, a former Army psychologist who has also testified before Congress, said, "I feel flat out that psychiatrists are directly responsible for deaths in our military, for some of these suicides," in a March Marine Timesarticle. "I think it's criminal, what they are doing." Still, the remarks of Katie Bagosy, the wife of Marine Sgt. Tom Bagosy who took his own life in May after being prescribed the medication Neurontin, might be the most persuasive of all. In an article called "A Prescription For Tragedy" in the current National Journal, she says that her husband told her before his death that "'It all started to get worse when I got on this medication.’ Looking back, that was the beginning of the end.” Martha Rosenberg frequently writes about the impact of the pharmaceutical, food and gun industries on public health. At this point the FDA is so corrupt that nothing they say should be accepted without independent corroboration. Certainly FDA approval of any drug is not a reccomendation. It simply means that it won't kill you immediately - generally speaking of course.

They made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Since I had a specialty in short supply I qualified for the max re-enlistment bonus, duty where I wanted, and another stripe. That was too sweet to pass on. Although looking back on it with the clarity of 20-20 hindsight I wish I had because I would have been 4 years further along into a new career.

those are 2 excellent quotes from your comment. my nephew is in the US Marines currently. He told me that they have a drug to give you when you go into combat and it makes up stay up and alert without needing sleep for 72 hours. with all the abuse these guys take from their mission and how society uses them for that mission it is a very difficult path for them I think. But they joined because alternatives were difficult also. a fellow who was trying to become a psychiatrist told me once that he switched his major to avoid that profession precisely because he detected that it was mandatory for young psychiatrists to participate in drugging up children and others. There are some psychiatrists who know it is wrong to drug people up and resist it, but these are the minority and they are being pressured by the others to go along, or else not be considered a psychiatrist.

Organized Psychiatry is dominated by some very sick and psychotic individuals. People have known there was something wrong with it for some time thus the stigma associated with going to a "shrink". However, most people are not even aware of some of the sick depravity that exists within that "profession". Some interesting observations are that Psychiatrists have the highest rates for Medicare Fraud (my personal favorite is the Shrink that was playing Golf in the Bahamas but according to his Billing Records he saw 200 patients that day), Insurance Fraud, Sexual abuse of patients, and the highest rate of suicide for any M.D. specialty. The last one is at least a hopeful sign.

pretty funny. I can't condone drugging people up. I find it incredible that psychiatrists and others go along with it. I've read that for children with ADD symptoms if you improve their diet dramatically to take them away from sugar and processed foods, towards fresh vegetables, fruits, real foods, then the ADD symptoms can be greatly improved. and get the kids off of tv as well. These alternative therapies should be pursued. also, I heard on the radio that raw unpasturized milk greatly helps these kids. When a kid is diagnosed with ADD he may be on drugs the rest of his life as a result of that diagnosis. and a 4-1/2 year old is twice as likely to be diagnosed that way than a 5-1/2 year old in the same classroom. I do not believe that the younger children have a genetic defect that causes ADD. They have a little bit different behavior, they are difficult to handle, and so they are diagnosed. and then once diagnosed it is a pharmaceutical drug in their brains for over 10 years. That is insanity. Do people in America realize that around 20% or 25% of all the boys in our nation are on these drugs. I know of a free clinic that treats the children of poor families for mental health issues. A large portion of their patients are children of mexican immigrants. and that free clinic was a fashionable charity we were encouraged to support financially. all they do is drug up children.

Here I have to start with the premise as ADD/ADHD are mythical ailments invented to provide a label to a variety of behaviors which may or may not be any real detriment. For starters there is no formal medical testing done nor does any exist to justify the drugging of children merely, in most cases, simply being rambunctious and energetic. Let me repeat that as it is key in understanding that ADHD is a fraud there is NO medical test which exists to either support the existence of ADHD and NONE which confirms or even justifies the need to load a kid up on speed which is exactly what Ritalin and Adderol are. Chemically and biologically their effects are no different than Methamphetamines which are highly illegal. ADD/ADHD as a diagnosis is purely a matter not of science but of subjective opinion. It is done off of a list of "symptoms" which can be found in virtually any child to some degree. It is a list based not on science but on a vote by the committee which writes the DSM (Diagnostical and Statistical Manual) which is the Billing Bible of the Psychiatric Industry. In fact that holds true for EVERY listing in the DSM i.e., it is based purely upon a vote of the committee assembling the codes. Oh, and as you point out indirectly the vast majority of those diagnosed with this made up disease for which there is no science to support are boys. The last number I was aware of was that about 85% of ALL ADD/ADHD diagnoses were on boys. What is being diagnosed and treated as ADD/ADHD is, as a friend of mine's Pediatrician put it "normal boyhood behavior". His standard treatment is "cut off the sugar, and take him to the park to let him play off some of that excess energy" - instead of setting in front of the Idiot Toob. It would take a fairly lengthy article to go into even basic detail but all of the things you mention have been found to be factors in one child or another in causing the behavior commonly misdiagnosed as "ADHD". It can be traced to diet, allegies, and even insufficient vocabulary to understand the child's school materials. A change in diet and a focus on basic vocabulary and understanding of the words which a child needs to understand to understand their reading is a miracle worker, and it does not require a single tab of speed.

it is an amazing indictment that you make. and I agree. I know there are some people who say that these drugs helped them or their children. I can believe that. But they are also quick to give dosages that are high compared to what was used 30-40 years ago. If one drug isn't working they switch to another and add 2 to see what combination of drugs works and in what dosage. The psychiatrists use the term cocktail to describe it even. and so often if the child is merely subdued, then this is considered good. and the child can stay on those drugs until somebody makes a big effort to get them off. I've read medical doctors say that all these drugs really do is prepare kids for illegal drugs when they get older. and let's make no mistake that the actual kids taking these drugs do sometimes crush them up to powder and sell it to others who use it for a high. I've read that public schools in America must hire psychiatrists or else the DOE in Washington will cut their funding. and also that a minimum number of kids must be put on drugs at each school or else the DOE will cut their funding. In 2005 the Republicans passed a law in Washington called 'New Freedom Initiative'. That law created a situation where if the federal government appoints your child a psychiatrist and that psychiatrist prescribes drugs, then the parent is a criminal if the child doesn't take the drugs. This is a very evil agenda. and yet very few Americans even detect that it is so. Think of the money that goes into these drugs. If that same money went to get higher quality foods and better non-drug programs for these kids, then real progress could be made. School teachers have told me that the ADD problem with kids is very bad, much worse than 50 years ago I've been told. There are some kids who do have behavior problems. But for myself I am convinced that these are problems of their environment, their diet, etc. psychiatrist' drugs today are a bit like lobotomies of a previous time.

Yes, it kills the sparkle. It turns them into a drugged up and "manageable" little automaton. Not only are the poor kids often kept on it all through their formative years, depriving them of the joy of living, statistically they are, as you noted, more likely to become drug abusers - cocaine being very prevalent among children who have been on Ritalin etc., ... That stems from the "Family and Mental Health Act" which was passed the year after Kennedy was murdered. It was signed into law by that criminal Lyndon Bane Johnson. It is from that a lot of these mandates flow. Prior to the passage of that act there was no such thing, except here and there, as a "School Psychologist". It helped change the emphasis in public schools from academics to "personalities" and eventually "Outcome Based Education" - which is basically Soviet Indoctrination given a fancy name. A more Orwellian name I cannot think of. The so-called "New Freedom" is the freedom to be forced to take drugs based on subjective criteria masquerading as science. There is a test online that is part of it which any perfectly normal child can take and then come out rated as in need of Psychiatric evaluation and of course drugging. The problem of course is that what we perceive as ill effects are the intended objectives of the program. The elite does not want intelligent functional adults among the proletariat. They want docile minions who do not think, and do not question. In short Drones to fulfill THEIR needs and wants. That is exactly what they are. Drugs like Ritalin and Adderol are serving the function of intellectually gelding bright, mostly, young boys and preventing them from becoming a problem to their "betters".

I think I still have my dress uniform around here somewhere. The one hat I wanted to keep for fishing was the one I lost. Damn. Although only my Blues had my last stripe on them. The one thing that was strange was that after I turned in my I.D. I felt naked. It was the first time I had been without a formal piece of paper to prove who I was for quite some time.

I was in the brown shoe Air Force at its dying gasp before it turned all blue. At the very beginning I was told, "you are not a good sojer"... That was true by intent, I never gave in. I sold my dress uniforms for beer money in the second year (60 bucks) got along wearing flight uniform when flying and civilian clothes otherwise In fact at discharge I had to borrow a uniform. hehehehehehehehehe I was NOT a good sojer.
Modern medicine tends to treat people like machines made of meat. Psychiatry is no different. I once had a snotty young Butterbar tell me I was the most annoying man on the ship. I couldn't get my hat to fit right for 3 days. ;-)

Oh, don't get me wrong I was so happy I could have soared without wings. It just felt strange not having an I.D.. I was one of only 2 E-6's that was processing out. Since I had done over 8 years there was no IRR and so no I.D.. Once I turned in that green card that was it. I was lucky in that I had a Recruiter who was retiring and he pretty much gave me the straight dope. So, I had some idea of what I was getting into. The one thing that really didn't hit until I was in was the degrading way most officers treat enlisted men. I never got used to that and never accepted it - although I did learn to bite my tongue.

Psychiatrists have the highest rates for Medicare Fraud Psychiatrists are greed driven robots, like machines, they obey their superiors. Their bosses are the corporate directors at corporate hospitals, and in government positions. Those mad psychiatrists who drug our servicemen are directed to create soldiers who will obey, without questioning their orders. The drugs prescribed will do just that, make the soldier, or the private citizen stupid, with the brain altering chemicals, creating "indifference" to his or her circumstances. The mad psychiatrists job is to make soldiers and private citizens "obey", and comply whatever the ruling class elitists have decreed. Insurance fraud is common, the psychiatrist's staff is ordered to flagrantly lie about the patient's condition in order to treat their "victim", to create the desired effect on their "target", and to get the money into their hands. The favorite line, or most popular lie used by psychiatrists and therapists is: "You are much better, very good" after every session.. Because in the mad psychiatrists eyes, the more brain damage incurred by their mind altering drugs, the "better" the patient or "victim" is.

I've read medical doctors say that all these drugs really do is prepare kids for illegal drugs when they get older. and let's make no mistake that the actual kids taking these drugs do sometimes crush them up to powder and sell it to others who use it for a high.
I've read that public schools in America must hire psychiatrists or else the DOE in Washington will cut their funding. and also that a minimum number of kids must be put on drugs at each school or else the DOE will cut their funding.
In 2005 the Republicans passed a law in Washington called 'New Freedom Initiative'.
Think of the money that goes into these drugs. If that same money went to get higher quality foods and better non-drug programs for these kids, then real progress could be made.
psychiatrist' drugs today are a bit like lobotomies of a previous time.

I think I still have my dress uniform around here somewhere. The one hat I wanted to keep for fishing was the one I lost. Damn. Although only my Blues had my last stripe on them. The one thing that was strange was that after I turned in my I.D. I felt naked. It was the first time I had been without a formal piece of paper to prove who I was for quite some time.

Because in the mad psychiatrists eyes, the more brain damage incurred by their mind altering drugs, the "better" the patient or "victim" is.
"In the 14-year period between 1950 and 1964, more American deaths occurred in state and county mental institutions than in all of the nation's armed conflicts beginning with the Revolutionary War and ending with the Persian Gulf War. Between 1965 and 1990, the total number of mental-hospital inpatient deaths exceeded the number of battle deaths in the same wars by 70 percent. Inpatient deaths topped out at 1,103,000 during this 25-year period, compared with 650,563 recorded deaths in battles."
