Marijuana Cuts Tumor Growth by 50%

The active ingredient in marijuana cuts tumor growth in common lung cancer in half and significantly reduces the ability of the cancer to spread, say researchers at Harvard University who tested the chemical in both lab and mouse studies.

They say this is the first set of experiments to show that the compound, Delta- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), inhibits EGF-induced growth and migration in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expressing non-small cell lung cancer cell lines. Lung cancers that over-express EGFR are usually highly aggressive and resistant to chemotherapy.

THC that targets cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 is similar in function to endocannabinoids, which are cannabinoids that are naturally produced in the body and activate these receptors. The researchers suggest that THC or other designer agents that activate these receptors might be used in a targeted fashion to treat lung cancer.

"The beauty of this study is that we are showing that a substance of abuse, if used prudently, may offer a new road to therapy against lung cancer," said Anju Preet, Ph.D., a researcher in the Division of Experimental Medicine. Acting through cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, endocannabinoids (as well as THC) are thought to play a role in variety of biological functions, including pain and anxiety control, and inflammation. Although a medical derivative of THC, known as Marinol, has been approved for use as an appetite stimulant for cancer patients, and a small number of U.S. states allow use of medical marijuana to treat the same side effect, few studies have shown that THC might have anti-tumor activity, Preet says. The only clinical trial testing THC as a treatment against cancer growth was a recently completed British pilot study in human glioblastoma.

In the present study, the researchers first demonstrated that two different lung cancer cell lines as well as patient lung tumor samples express CB1 and CB2, and that non-toxic doses of THC inhibited growth and spread in the cell lines. "When the cells are pretreated with THC, they have less EGFR stimulated invasion as measured by various in-vitro assays," Preet said.

Then, for three weeks, researchers injected standard doses of THC into mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells, and found that tumors were reduced in size and weight by about 50 percent in treated animals compared to a control group. There was also about a 60 percent reduction in cancer lesions on the lungs in these mice as well as a significant reduction in protein markers associated with cancer progression, Preet says.

Although the researchers do not know why THC inhibits tumor growth, they say the substance could be activating molecules that arrest the cell cycle. They speculate that THC may also interfere with angiogenesis and vascularization, which promotes cancer growth.

Preet says much work is needed to clarify the pathway by which THC functions, and cautions that some animal studies have shown that THC can stimulate some cancers. "THC offers some promise, but we have a long way to go before we know what its potential is," she said.

UCLA medical school did a study that came out 2-3 years ago. It said that long-term heavy marijuana smokers were less likely to get lung cancer than even people who smoked no tobacco and no marijuana either. that came out several years ago and even after that studies are produced that say marijuana smoking will cause lung cancer.

here's the key - marijuana has in it many active ingredients. Test these active ingredients by themselves and you may get different results. There are many things in marijuana that are also in tobacco smoke and researchers feel these things cause lung cancer. But for some reason when it is actually smoked, something in the marijuana prevents lung cancer.

This does not stop medical experts from producing studies saying that marijuana causes lung cancer. the thing is, in those studies they did not actually test marijuana smoking. They tested ingredients and not the whole product.

I'm more of Lod's generation.

you should try it if you have the opportunity. You'd enjoy it. and it would not harm you.

but, regarding the study above, I bet there's a lot of pharmaceutical type treatments for cancer that don't have the track record of slowing down tumor growth by 50%.

I'm convinced that if as much research was put into finding medical uses for herbs and natural plants as there is into pharmaceutical drugs, then we'd be using a lot of cures from the natural world.

marijuana is a very peculiar plant. because the form of it that people smoke has over 100 active ingredients. 'Active' ingredient means it does something to people. and no other plant has anywhere near that number of active ingredients. and then when you consider the industrial hemp version of this same plant it is evident that this is a super plant that does incredible things.

Do you realize that if farmers could grow hemp, then we'd likely solve a lot of economic problems. There are just that many uses for it to industry. and it would be a lot cheaper than the current alternatives used.

I frequently complain about how the government subsidizes ethanol production from corn. If they used hemp, then I don't think they'd need subsidies. and hemp unlike about every other crop you can grow, does not require crop rotation, it aerates the soil and it is good for the soil. and it requires very little effort by the farmer. its not vulnerable to weeds, because it is a weed and crowds other weeds out.

There is a verse in the bible where god says 'I will send you a plant to solve all your problems'. what other plant could it be?

In Canada they did a study with mice and large quantities of marijuana smoke they put into those mice. They expected to prove that marijuana smoking can cause brain damage. What they found was just the opposite. For the mice who were given heavy marijuana for a period of time and then taken completely off of it, for that group and that group only, their brains grew like crazy after they were taken off of it. They became smarter. and for all other groups it did nothing to the brain that the researchers considered brain damage.

The declaration was written on hemp paper. The constitution was written on sheepskin. think about it.

In the late 1700's and the early 1800's it was hemp that was our #1 crop in this country.

i remember a while back Dr. Katherine Albrecht, author of SPYCHIPS & GCN radio host, did a program covering a study which revealed pot use can cause paranoia & other mental maladies. she mentioned how she took a lot of flak from her audience, but it was a fascinating discussion with guests. she doesn't come from a prohibititionist or pro govt view at all. just examines the data. i should post the mp3 archive, later. or, its in the audio archive at spychips.com or katherinealbrecht.com. i knew potheads. i didnt like their lifestyle & saw how it harms initiative & motivation. i do think it should be legal though. i am against prohibitition & the 'drug war'.

Actually Neville Chamberlain was a failure as a hemp farmer in the 1920s, so he turned to politics.

Then someone decided to smoke it, new industry. In the 1940s, Robert Mitchum was the first Hollywood type I recall being arrested for smoking hemp.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal here, but I'm also sure that in small amounts out in the boonies, no cop would care. Or if one did, he'd care more about getting a $5 or $10 payout to look the other way.

The harder stuff in bigger amounts, especially near the Colombian border would be a different matter.

Then somebody WHITE decided to smoke it. Black musicians had been using the stuff way before the 40's. Gene Krupa was busted for it in '43.

Semantics. People don't smoke hemp as it doesn't have the active ingredients to get high on. That's the stuff for industrial use.

I guess you spent your teenage years playing a ukelele, wearing a racoon coat and pining afer flappers?
