I just learned about a new readiness product tonight listening to the third hour of the Jeff Rense program. Ready Reserve Foods is now beginning to offer Ready Reserve Ammo packed in airtight nitrogen flushed cans. As long as the seal is maintained the Ammo can set on the shelf virtually indefinitely in reserve ready for an emergency. Either as part of a bug-out bag or part of the stores for a retreat this item makes a lot of sense. It is one thing to have reserve supplies and another to be able to hold onto it in a social collapse. At this point in time they are offering two calibers .22 LR and .223 FMJ. Here are the pdf downloads of the labels. It is so new I could not yet find it on their web site. The .22 LR comes in two size cans: The .223 comes in one size: This is about the closest I've seen for a no-brainer to add to your emergency supplies.

Dynamit .308 and SA surplus .308 come in airtight battlepacks as well. Just as effective as the Ready Reserve Stuff.
Which is a good round. However the .22 LR is a good survival round. It will take down a rabbit or a deer, if you are a good enough shot, and is cheap. However, the .308 chambers in my father's all time favorite rifle the Springfield Armory Model 1903. So, it works for me. The advantage of the .223 is that it chambers in the Mini-14 which is a good all purpose survival rifle. Also being a standard military round it is likely to be around even in hard times.

However, are they nitrogen flushed, and will they still be good after, say, 20 years on the shelf?

What is nitrogen flushing? The Dynamit ammo is already 25+ years old, and the even older SA surplus is the hottest surplus around, best quality. I have shot both varieties, and they function flawlessly.
It means forcing the oxygen out of the can and replacing it with nitrogen which is an inert gas. The technology has been around for a while and is used in packing some types of coffee as oxygen is the enemy of good tasting coffee as coffee oxidizes very fast. Over time some of the ingredients in gunpowder will oxidize which can result in uneven burning, loss of power, and rounds that while they appear to shoot fine are performing under spec. Given enough time they become unreliable. It depends upon how well they are packaged. What the nitrogen flushing, and both inner and outer enameling of the can, do is guarantee that when you open that can the ammo will perform to original specification. The guy from Ready Reserve suggested that a shelf life of 70 years or longer was not an unreasonable expectation. The point in purchasing Ammo packaged this way is that you have a reserve that has a verrrrrrrrrrry long shelf life, is protected from moisture, and if need arises will fire reliably 50 years from now if need be.

I've got .308, .223, and 30-06 with headstamps from the 50's and 60's that have been in reg. ammo cans since my Army days in the 60's. No misfires or low power. I shoot fairly often. Just keep it as dry as you can, like in Ammo Cans. BTW, the NRA, way back when .308 was new, tested it in 30-06 weapons, as have I. Other than Fire Forming the brass to where it doesn't reload there were no harmful results.
Over time even the best ammo will lose power and become less reliable due to oxidation of components of the powder. See my above note to Echo....

And that may well be so. Still I like the Ready Reserve idea as it is packaged in convenient units, and it gives an extra measure of protection which requires no additional care or thought as long as the can remains undamaged. I don't think this product is really aimed at avid gunners who routinely go through a lot of rounds but is aimed (pardon the pun) at people who are simply looking to build up a store of reliable emergency supplies. The packaging is kind of like "belt and suspenders" - for sure, for sure. So, for someone who wants to set aside a store of ammo that they don't have to worry about and store under the exact correct conditions it is a viable solution. Perhaps not the only one, but a good one. For the same reason, one might well consider packaging a weapon or two well greased, in oil cloth, and a sealed container. It is a reserve.

There were so many problems with gunpowder misfirings in the War of 1812, especdially on wet and windy days, that it's why the phrase "flash in the pan" became engrained in our lexicon.

While modern smokeless powder is a different formulation it is still a good analogy. "Keep your powder dry" is still good advice.

Okay, they create a modified atmosphere in the storage cans. The Russian spam cans work well to preserve the ammo. They are really cheap, fire reliably, and are wonderfully firm and heavy feeling. No actual spam, though.

I was wondering when you would ask that. While I don't know for sure I suspect that the usual 5 gallon bucket flushed with dry ice/CO2 (and dessicants) would work. However CO2 is not an inert gas as is nitrogen (has to do with having a full valence shell in the outermost shell of electrons - inert gases have a full shell so don't have an open spot to bond and thus react except under special circumstances of temperature and/or pressure) so I don't know how it would compare over very long periods of time. It would offer the advantage of storing more than one type of ammo in a tub. Oxygen is the main enemy as it reacts with other chemical compounds and metals, such as in smokeless powder, and so the CO2 should reduce that to negligible.

Whatever pleases you. There is generally more than one solution to a problem, and I am not saying yours is a bad solution. However, .308 is, as you note, heavier and is a good round if you are hunting deer, elk, bear, or men. However, as an all around survival round .22 LR is hard to beat (and is cheap), and the .223 is what it takes to feed a mini-14 which is probably my favorite all around survival rifle.

Why choose one when you can have both? I possess all three calibers.
My latest tool, from texasguntraders.com , is a Marlin 1895G 45-70, a really cool carbine that I'm dying to try out.
Should be, if stored in a closet or cabinet. I've got WWII surplus 8X57mm Mauser ammo that fires reliably in my Mauser 98k rifle and it probably traveled all over before I got it.

The chief advantage of the Ready Reserve back-up ammo is that it requires no special storage requirements and can just be put on the shelf like any other canned good. You could even change the label and hide it in plain site. As well it is packed in easily portable sizes. You can throw a couple of cans in your "bug-out" bag and just grab and go. I like the idea primarily for three reasons: 1. Convenient size. 2. Long term storage ability without having to worry about normal environmental conditions at all. 3. The calibers, .22 LR and .223 FMJ, are lightweight, effective, and are very common rounds for a lot of good survival weapons. No, it might not be the first choice for a lot of avid gunners with exotic weapons and the addition of .38 special, 9 mm, .357, and .45 would be nice for common side arms. However, this is also an initial offering to find out if it is a viable product.

Agreed. As long as outer surface corrosion doesn't cause a leak you can stash it just about anywhere with no worries about long-term survivability.
