Good and Bad in the 112th Congress

The 112th Congress is beginning to take shape, and, well, we have good news and bad news.

Good news first: Ron Paul has been slated to chair the Domestic Monetary Policy Subcommittee.

The Texas congressman has been toiling away at the margins of power on Capitol Hill for years. A proponent of a gold standard and a free-marketer of the “Austrian” School, he has been a voice crying in the wilderness. One of the few people in Congress who did not treat Alan Greenspan as a divine oracle, he is now one of Ben Bernanke’s harshest critics.

Of course, after recent events and bailouts and all, Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke has lots of critics.

As chair of the subcommittee that watches over the Fed, Ron Paul has finally attained a position to accomplish something. This is a major reversal in the power structure. We can’t expect miracles (Ron Paul being but one man), but do expect fireworks.

Now, the bad news.

It’s been less than a month since Republicans in the House voted on a moratorium on earmarks. And already they are, reportedly, beginning to feel queasy. Perhaps as a sign of a general turncoatish nature, the next chair of the House Appropriations Committee is set to be Rep. Hal Rogers.

Sixteen-term congressman Rogers has earned a reputation for pushing pork. His hometown has received so much federal largesse it’s called “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

Still, he says he’ll enforce the pork moratorium. We’ll see.

Agree with this. The hard work begins now, and should they stray, the penalty is political exile.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

The hard work begins now

Change to what, two years of back to the future Bush-Cheney?

Obama redefined hope, McConnell-Boner will redefine change.

Keep your powder dry, 2012 will tell the tale.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. .... Happy New Year, Brother Icon, AND RIGHT YOU ARE. Since our actual options are slim and none, I've opted for the slim - but I hold no illusions. Been there & done all than in 1994 with the "Gingrich Revolution." If this Tea Party movement doesn't boot the infiltrators, and remain true to the cause of small government, I fully expect a very ugly ending to this Grand Experiment.

Best to all!

I just saw this post. Here's the lyrics. You're right, they are apropos.

Here we go --- vertigo
Video vertigo
Test for echo

Here we go --- in slo-mo
Video vertigo
Test for echo

Some kind of trouble on the sensory screen
Camera curves over caved-in cop cars
Bleacher-creatures, would-be desperados
Clutch at plausible deniability
Don't touch that dial ---
We're in denial
Until the showcase trial on TV

Some kind of pictures on the sense o'clock news
Miles of yellow tape --- silhouetted chalklines
Tough-talking hood boys in pro-team logo knock-offs
Conform to uniforms of some corporate entity
Don't change that station
It's Gangster Nation
Now crime's in syndication on TV

What a show --- vertigo
Video vertigo
Test for echo

Touch and go -- in slo-mo
Video vertigo
Test for echo

Some kind of drama live on satellite
Hidden camera coverage from the crime scene to the courtroom
Nail-biting hood boys in borrowed ties and jackets
Clutching at the straws of respectability
Can't do the time?
Don't do the crime
And wind up in the perp walk on TV

Well, one more pull on the ol' Pubbie chain.

The angular momentum of the particles of crap suspended in the political sludge increases in inverse relation to the distance from the drain trap. That's the giant sucking sound you hear.

Happy New Year, Jethro. Hope things work out well for you and yours.

Bahaaaaaaaaa.......

randge, that might be the best description of the knee deep crapola we're in that I've ever heard :)

Happy New Year to all of yours down in Southland!

Happy New Year, Brother Icon

Back at yuh, JT.

I also have a skeptical eye on Kasich and the newly elected Pubbies in Columbus. Reapportioning is on the horizon here and if our local congressional "Rep"s thread-thin district across the northern (mostly urban) portion of OH isn't redrawn then there's something really, really wrong.
