FDNY Set To Institute 56;Crash Tax57;

New Yorkers Stunned At Notion Of Being Billed By Firefighters

NEW YORK (CBS 2) 52; The cost of driving in New York City is about to get more costly. That is, if you need medical attention after an accident.

In a time of tight budget times, the city is looking for new ways to recoup costs.

And drivers needing help from the FDNY will be the targets.

Getting hurt in a car accident is painful enough, but if firefighters have to respond, expect more pain 52; in your wallet.

Starting next summer, the city plans to bill drivers in accidents that require an emergency response.

The so-called “crash tax” works like this: A car fire or accident with injury would cost you $490. A car fire without injury, $415. And any vehicle accident without injury will run you $365.

60;Definitely a sign of the times and disappointing, both,” said Jack Bashkow of Midtown.

60;It57;s a new reality for New York. It57;s not the social contract,” said Larry Horowitz of the Upper West Side.

Drivers CBS 2’s Sean Hennessey spoke to on Thursday night were none too pleased.

60;I think it57;s kind of crude. It57;s basically inhumane to leave someone sitting there, laying there,” said Lisa Kohn of the Upper West Side.

Hennessey: 60;That57;s not to say they57;re not going to treat you, but they57;re going to charge you for it.61;

Kohn: 60;Well, the question is can they collect?61;

The FDNY says: 60;We want to relieve pressure on the taxpayer and place it on those at fault and their insurance. Right now if you57;re at fault at an accident or a vehicle fire, you get a free ride. And that should not be borne by the taxpayers.61;

But under the plan, you57;ll get charged even if the accident isn57;t your fault.

60;Why should I be charged for something that I didn57;t cause? Send a bill to the guy who caused it. That has nothing to do with me,” said the Upper West Side’s Ariel Schachter.

Few want this, especially those in their cars all the time.

60;That57;s not right to send a bill because the accident 70; nobody do it willingly,” taxi driver Mohammad Khan said.

The FDNY said it57;ll hold public hearings next month and that they57;ll take the public57;s concern into consideration. But because the idea doesn57;t need City Council approval, and already has the backing of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, most expect its implementation to be a given.

The proposal is set to take effect July 1 and is expected to raise $1 million in revenue.

Poster Comment:

This is hilarious!!! Nearly every accident I responded to in the ghetto was a Puerto Rican Mystery; no insurance, no licenses, no 'speeky Englesh'. The effing city will burn down before the fire fighters sort out who these "New Yorkers" really are, and who to charge. This money grab is just another sterling example of the political Left gone wild, thanks to years and years of unchecked social spending on useless turd world people. (2 images)

useless turd world people

You don't sound very happy this morning, JT. You don't seem to appreciate the rich cultural diversity social programs that the US government has bent over backwards to spend your hard earned dollars on.

Think of all the wonderful and beneficial changes you have helped to select within America: when using your telephone, calling many businesses, today you get to select #2 for English else the default is Spanish enunciations thereafter raising the costs of doing business; your voting pamphlet is in 15 different languages (and three dialects of Chinease) all the cost of the US taxpayer; your local educational institutions spend enormous time and resources bring foreign nations up to the current level of American students while those same American school kids doodle or lose precious time to learn anything useful; small socio-ethnic centrist enclaves are built everywhere so that you can take your family "around the world" just driving around town thus creating the cultural experience your children deserve; exposure to el carbon gato tacos (yummy with a little hot sauce) and don't forget that all-time favourite: duck-back hanging up-side-down outside collecting flies all day and skewered to your individual tast perfection.

Now, don't let me forget to tell you about all the inexpensive "immigrants" that have come to America to help you with your daily chores: mowing the yard, pulling weeds, washing the car, washing the dishes and cleaning your toilets! And don't let me forget to address the impact of rape, burglary, murder and illicit narcotics these same wonder people have provided for you.

Yes, JT, your personal hatred of the warmth and richness of governmental intrusion to acquaint you with social diversity is startling.

buckeroo, I'm tempted to turn your racist rant into the nearest National Diversity Bureau. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I predict that within a year the FDNY will be responding to all accidents no matter how small and whether they are needed or not.
