(1) Mark Madoff was unaware of his father's scam until he confronted his father about some questionable business decisions, at which point he learned about - and caused to be revealed - his father's Ponzi swindle. So Mark is actually something of a hero in this story. (2) He leaves behind a small son, also a grown brother. (3) He was recently hit with enormous lawsuits from victims of his father's swindle. He may well have felt a great deal of personal guilt and shame over this affair, and over his inability to make up everyone's losses.

That's too bad.

Well at least there's one innocent person in the story.

Yeah, Shoonra omitted the fact that Daddy hung himself while junior was cruising around the apartment....some hero.

I suspect that somebody may have "helped" Daddy hang himself and figured the kid was too little to be a witness and so spared him.

Why do you suspect that?

This is speculation, and clearly labeled as such.

Mr. Madoff was a "loose end", and it appears from some of the evidence, indirect and speculatative, that his father, Bernard Madoff, was working for Israel. His sons may, or may not, have known that.

He was under increasing pressure from lawsuits stemming from the criminality his father went to prison for.

As such he was a "lightning rod" bringing constant attention to the case and keeping it in the news. As such he was creating negative Public Relations, and continued interest in the case, just by continuing to breathe.

His wife had already filed in court for a name change for her and the kids because of the adverse publicity.

The manner of his suicide is just a bit odd. While he could well have gotten despondent and taken his own life generally when somebody like this commits suicide it is at least somewhat planned out and they don't use a "dog leash" to hang themselves. In fact men, statistically, are much more likely to use a gun, just as women are more likely to use poison.

So, the speculation runs something like this: He had become inconvenient to the people his father answered to and they decided to eliminate the inconvenience and the publicity, speculation, and continued investigation that went with it.

With his death the lawsuits against him personally become moot, and go away. After a little flurry of news coverage about his unfortunate "suicide" the case disappears from the news. Much like the late Deborah Jean Palfrey, a.k.a. "The D.C. Madam", who committed suicide in her mother's garage with an electrical cord - hanging herself of course. Clean up on aisle 3 complete.

He could have been facing forclosure too.........

An article from 2009 states: Mark Madoff, who earned as much as $5 million annually, married Stephanie, his second wife, in a million-dollar-plus wedding on Nantucket in 2003. The couple later paid $6.5 million for a 3.3-acre spread and McMansion on the island.

He paid top dollar at the top end of the market. Plus, he no longer makes $5 million annually........what he does make the courts wanted to take.

And all of what you say is true. However, that does not nail it down. Yes, it provides possible motivation. I am not denying that. However, his death is a great convenience for people other than his family - people with things to hide.

So, all I am speculating is that while it could have been suicide it might not have been either. I know Bing Crosby's son drank his way through millions left him by his mother and then when he faced the prospect of actually having to work, because Bing tied his money up until the boys hit 65 so that they WOULD have to earn a living, he blew his brains out at 42.

No, the problem I have with it is that there are too many hints and suggestions that ol' Bernie Madoff was laundering and funneling money to Israel, and that has been lingering in the background. With Junior out of the way then he no longer acts as a lightening rod. I don't have the data to say it was either way - suicide or "suicided". However, the question remains open in my mind.

There is another son, Andrew, who worked for Bernie.

Andrew is in the news just as much, if not more, than Mark was. He went through a public divorce, was attacked physically by his dad's ponzi victims, faces criminal charges for investment fraud as well as a slew of lawsuits to take his assets.

Well, we'll see if Andrew has an "accident". Data is still insufficient. I stand by my speculation and that is what it is and clearly labeled - a speculation with not even enough evidence to call it a suspicion. Like I said it is entirely possible that he really did commit suicide, but I simply, in a convoluted case such as this, will not rule out "assisted suicide". I don't have the inside info so I don't know. I can see how someone seeing their life crashing in ruins could become despondent enough to take the coward's way out. I can also see that it is possible that he was in possession of information someone else might have been concerned he would disclose. I draw no firm and final conclusion.
