It must have also come as a shock to his Irish-born maternal grandfather, who was an Episcopalian minister. For that matter, it must have been a shock to all of his Scottish and Scots-Irish ancestors to know that they were all closet Jews.

The father and grandfather and great grandfather are completely irrevelant in regards to Jewishness. One needs only have a Jewish mother to be Jewish or a mother of Jewish ancestry. That Jewish gene must pass on through moms.

Try reading of Richard Holbrooke, who died today. His family tree is littered with false, fake and real names. He was Jew thru and thru, attended Quaker meetings, his parents were atheists.
When anyone is arrogant enough to declare any person in government as non Jew, they usually have not a clue about what they speak.
lol.......how quickly folks forget the Jewish is a race not a religion debate. I did read that Woodrow Wilson's mother was over protective, melodramatic, and somewhat of a hypochondriac, which could be argued are characteristic traits of the Jewish mother. : )
To make the situation more clear, I maintain the term Jew is determined by culture.
If you want to be one, so be it. Race, blood and religion are of no consequence.
I was shocked years ago to find Jews hiding in my family tree. The usual ruse, name changing. They were German Jews, emigrated to Ireland, changed name to closest Irish name, became protestant and emigrated to this country as good olde Irish boys.
