Revolt: Republicans Angry About Omnibus Spending Bill Decry 'Total Mess'

Published December 14, 2010

| FoxNews.com

Republicans poring over a 1,924-page overarching spending bill proposed by Democrats to cover the rest of the fiscal year are threatening to grind the legislation to a halt, citing hidden earmarks and massive spending that would be enacted into law without a review process.

Two sources who spoke to Fox News are describing the legislation as "a total mess."

Devolving into pandemonium, a source said "all hell is breaking loose" ahead of a Republican policy lunch in which Sens. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Jim DeMint of South Carolina were expected to insist the omnibus bill be read in its entirety by the clerk on the Senate floor before a vote is held.

They also were expected to seek debate on all earmarks and any amendments. According to one source, Republican anger is aimed at the fact that earmarks are buried and word searches are so tough it's hard to dig out the details.

On top of that, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., also is revolting against the Democratic-sponsored bill, saying she will not support an omnibus spending bill unless it includes an amendment proposed by McCaskill and Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., that calls for a three-year cap in discretionary spending. Democratic leaders told McCaskill on Monday that they would meet a one-year gap, which she rejected, according to sources familiar with the conversations.

The fiscal year runs from Oct. 1-Sept. 30. Currently, a continuing resolution, the stopgap measure to keep government operational until a budget is passed, is set to expire on Saturday. If another CR or the bill itself isn't passed and signed into law by President Obama by then, the government will shut down.

A spokesman for Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said, "all hell is not breaking loose just yet" at the policy lunch that began at 12:30. "But I'm sure there will be a robust conversation."

On the House side, Republican leader John Boehner is apparently warning that if the Senate sends over the bill as it is, "We will work to kill it."

Opponents of the measure are finding support among conservative groups who describe the legislation as a Democratic attempt to lock in 2010's $3.5 trillion budget for the next year without allowing any spending cuts.

"Despite the dire fiscal crisis the nation faces, with a $13.8 trillion national debt that cannot be paid, and in spite of the American people who are demanding action to cut spending, Congress is busy voting to kick the can for yet another year. A vote for the continuing resolution is a vote for another trillion dollar-plus deficit, and that is simply unacceptable to all Americans. Any politician in Congress that has ever promised to reduce the deficit should vote 'no' on this continuing resolution," Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson said in a statement Tuesday.

Sounds good to me. Someone should have set a match to that place a long time ago.

My first publick prayer:

Dear Lord -

Please ensure pandamonium continues with these jerk-offs in Congress through the weekend. If everything works out by Saturday, I promise to only imbibe a bit of Redbreast on weekends in celebration thereof.

Amen.

About what I'd expect from a guy who considered Obama the best of the least. This is somewhat odd from a man who now identifies himself as a member of the tea party.

Well, I still maintain that John McCain and Palin would have been just as bad.

Palin wasn't running, and that isn't what you said back in '08. But now that you're a self proclaimed tea party advocate, it's all H2O under the bridge. Yes?

If you are seeking an admission that I was wrong about Obama, I freely admit it. He's much worse than I imagined he would be. I hereby apologize for ever saying anything positive about him.

I hope that is satisfactory to you, because this is the end of this conversation.

I think the spend-thrift republicans and their friend in the white house named Obama are going to usher in a $1.6 or $1.7 trillion budget deficit. all this talk of budget tightening, yet the result will be a higher deficit. a week ago they expanded the tax cuts and said those tax cuts were worth $450 billion a year. I think the spending cuts will be very small in comparison. and I think it will still cost $50 million to kill 1 taliban.

If the Rs in the House (the Senate is still a rubber stamp) allow this pork laden POS to pass, they know the consequences next go around. I have no better option on how to deal with them at this point.

cutting pork is OK. but if they want to reduce government & eliminate the spending deficit, then maybe they could just cut the department of defense spending by 60% or so, shut down 800 of the 1,000 bases we have outside of america, stop waging wars in Pakistan, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq & Yemen. We actually pay people to do war in Somalia. That is wasteful as well as bad. Our politicians should focus on that. Maybe rather than spend $50 million on killing each taliban we should fund medicare and social security which is something our people paid taxes for, our people need and will actually keep our domestic economy going. When we spend $50 million to kill a taliban we don't actually do anything for our domestic economy.

some of the politicians pretend that they want smaller government, no deficit spending, but they vote for it routinely.

Hell, if you gave him all that loot, you have more pull that I do.

Hell, I quit when one of his minions said they did not answer emails.

Rather enlightening that they not answer critical emails, answer others if you bugged them.

I will say this much for Robinson, they answered every email, every time.

Class shows.

Jethro, intentional or not, Paul became a spoiler in the last fiasco, nothing more. He shut off any honest run by any other person carrying the same anti government message. His effort threw it all back into the usual "two party" fraud. Many took note that the pubs and dems alike ran no one of value against him for his seat in Congress, last time or this time.

Odd? Coincidence???? Not in politics.

I just sent the following to the bums in both Houses of Congress:

"The Appropriations Bill is 1,924 pages long, proposes to spend 1.1 trillion dollars and was developed 'behind closed doors'. You politicians lack conscience, honor few 'promises' to your constituents, and have long exhibited despicable, appalling, shameful, disgraceful, dreadful, horrendous, inexcusable, atrocious, and abysmal behavior in your obligation to provide representation for those in your district.

Since you refuse to hear what your constituents tell you, there will now be an even larger and more active move to change things in Washington, D.C., by whatever means the Constitution allows. I might add, if those we elect would have the same respect for the Constitution as those who put you into office, we wouldn’t be where we are today."

I had previously called all their offices with a similar message, but I wanted to make sure there was something in black and white for them to refer to when they are "back home" licking their wounds after being shuttled out of their cushy job.

Forever the optomist here ... I refuse to give in until I take my last breath!

P.S. Those in D.C. WILL know when I take my last breath because they won't hear or see my name on messages any longer that describe who they are. MUHAHAHAHA

I can't argue with a thing you posted, just tell me how to get to a political place where war and killing doesn't exist. I'm all ears.

That is not the worst of it either. The Police State Food "Safety" Bill S.510 was tucked into this piece of shit.

And the unemployed are being held hostage to try and get this mess passed.
