Ukrainian Firm Hires Out Drinking Buddies

It's cheap at the price -- for 14 euros, a Ukrainian firm hires out drinking buddies to help while away the evenings in the industrial town of Dniprodzerzhynsk. The service is proving very popular.

A firm in eastern Ukraine has come up with a promising business idea -- hiring out drinking buddies with whom clients can shoot the breeze on long evenings out in the industrial town of Dniprodzerzhynsk, presumably over a bottle or two of vodka.

For a fee of around €14 ($18), a company called "Kind Fairy" provides "a pleasant companion who can enliven a boring evening," manager Yulia Peyeva told AFP.

Dniprodzerzhynsk on the river Dnieper is known for its heavy industry and named after the founder of the Bolshevik secret police, Felix Dzerzhynsky.

"Virtually all of our people are talented. They can play guitar, sing or recite poetry. Today you may want to talk about art and tomorrow to read Faust," said Peyeva, adding that the firm does not encourage binge drinking.

She said the service is enjoying strong demand, and that the firm employs a number of psychologists among its staff of boozing partners.

so people pay $18 to have a drinking buddy come to the house for an evening. This may not seem like much money to us. Somebody gets paid maybe $12 to spend an evening drinking with somebody else.

But it was only 20 years ago when many workers in Ukraine were working for the equivalent of $25/month and that is if they could get work. They were very poor, but this is due to the exchange rate. Their money is not hardly worth anything outside their country, that is why their wages were so cheap compared to the outside world.

When a country has the opportunity to trade and at the same time has a currency that is very inexpensive, then it will experience rapid economic growth. This is what has happened in Ukraine. and now people can work part-time jobs there just hanging out and drinking at somebody's house. and that $12 they get is not such a small amount of money to them because in their country their currency is cheap and it goes a long way.

Constantly keeping your currency over-valued will ruin your economy. That is what we've done here in our country.

"The ground of liberty is to be gained by inches, and we must be contented to secure what we can get from time to time and eternally press forward for what is yet to get. It takes time to persuade men to do even what is for their own good." -- Thomas Jefferson
