John Williams was gunned down by a psycho cop on a Seattle street last August
Under orders from a King County judge, police in Seattle, Wash., have released video footage of a police officer shooting a homeless man originally from Vancouver Island.

Wood carver John Williams was crossing a street when a police officer spotted him carrying a knife and a piece of wood.

Seattle police say Officer Ian Birk, 27, thought Williams was a threat.

Investigators say Williams had turned to face the officer but would not say if he had made any sort of move toward him.

Williams, 50, had been living in Seattle for 18 years, working as a carver at the Pike Place Market in the city's downtown tourist district, when he was shot Aug. 30.

He died after the officer shot him four times in the chest.

Audio recordings from the patrol car indicate Williams failed to comply with repeated orders to put down his knife, Seattle police said. A local art dealer said Williams was deaf in one ear and likely did not hear the officer.

Birk's lawyer did not agree with the release of the video, but King County District Court Judge Arthur Chapman ruled on Thursday that the footage should be released Friday.

Birk was recently asked to turn in his badge and his gun.

An inquest into the shooting is scheduled for January.

psycho cop

I'm just wondering?

How many of these "psycho cops" who get hired as cops have come from the Army or other branches of the military?

In an article posted here recently, that article spoke of the mind altering drugs forced on American soldiers which induce all sorts of bizarre behavior.

Were these cops trained in the military to be killing machines?

Are police departments currently drugging cops with mind altering drugs today?

Those are a couple of good questions.

How many of these "psycho cops" who get hired as cops have come from the Army or other branches of the military?

I would imagine a good percentage but I honestly don't have any solid numbers. I do know ex-military do get preference in hiring.

As far as the numbers on psychotropic drugs I have no idea. I do know a lot of cops take 'roids to bulk up and become beefier and I know those can cause bizarre behavior as well.

News report say that, when he was shot, Williams had closed the little folding knife he was carrying which so offended this lawman.

4 Seconds to Death! Charge Ian Birk in Shooting.

* overview
* petition

* Target: King County Prosecutor Dan Satterburg
* Sponsored by: John T. Williams Organizing Committee

On August 30, 2010 a Seattle police officer shot and killed John T. Williams, a Nitinaht member of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Williams was well known in the community as a wood carver. The in-car video camera from the officer's car shows Williams crossing the street in the crosswalk. He held a piece of wood and a 3-inch carving knife in his hand. The officer stopped his car, got out and according to his statement: called out multiple times. It is unclear if Williams heard the officer since he was deaf in one ear, partially deaf in the other and wearing a headset.

So far, no evidence has come to light of any aggressive or threatening act by Williams towards the officer or anyone else. According to the autopsy report Williams was not facing the officer when he was shot 4 times. It has been reported that the SPD Firearms Review Board made a preliminary finding that the shooting was not justified and the officer's badge and gun have been surrendered. An inquest is scheduled but the prosecutor may file charges now.

In an open letter from the ACLU to Mayor McGinn, Chief of Police John Diaz and the Seattle City Councilmembers, it is noted that "Too often, officers have overreacted or escalated incidents when the subject is an individual of color, disabled, homeless or, otherwise 'different'."

Stopping a citizen without cause and engaging in violence on our streets is unacceptable and unlawful. Action must be taken to ensure that the law applies to everyone including the Seattle Police.

The officer drew his firearm and within a few short seconds blasted the man in the back with four shots in rapid succession where there was no apparent threat to anyone nor any obvious crime in process.

That was cold blooded murder.

Just reading between the lines I think his Lordship was incensed that the lowly scumbag serf did not immediately respond to his commands. In other words he went into a rage when the guy didn't hear him and which he interpreted as disrespect for his exalted status of thug with badge and gun and so simply executed the serf for disrespect.

I certainly can't rule it out. One way or another it WAS murder. There was no justification for the shooting other than the thug wanted to shoot him for whatever reason. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that he is a veteran of Iraq, Afghanistan, or both.

Entirely possible - or a combination of that and what I suggested as a possibility above i.e., that he had done so much killing that he had become "Kill Happy".

A dash cam video from the officer who shot and killed Native American woodcarver John T. Williams was released Friday, showing Williams ambling slowly across the street in a crosswalk before the officer opens fire.

Although most of the action takes place off-screen, Williams is seen walking across the street in front of the patrol car in the video, dated Aug. 30.

The patrol car starts to pul More..l forward, then stops.

Officer Ian Burke can then be seen walking after Williams and shouting, "Hey, hey, hey! Put the knife down! Put the knife down!"

The officer walks off-screen and then five shots ring out in rapid succession, killing Williams.

Birk's badge was later pulled after a Seattle Police Department Review Board and Chief John Diaz reached a preliminary finding that Williams' shooting was not justified.

A judge ruled Thursday that the clip from officer Ian Birk's car could be released to the public after prosecutors had a chance to notify witnesses not to view the tape.

The tape's release comes after a public disclosure request from the Seattle Times.

An inquest into Williams' shooting death by Officer Ian Birk has been set to begin on Jan. 10. The facts of the case will be laid out in the open through the process.
