A toxic food-can lining ingredient which has been shown to cause a number of health ailments is the subject of at least four bills currently stalled in the U.S. House and Senate. John Kerry, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, and Al Franken are among the Senators who have signed on as cosponsors to ban the product from food containers. Absent entirely from any support for the bills are any 'Tea Party Caucus' representatives.

Bisphenol A, or BPA, has been shown in studies to cause birth defects of the male and female reproductive systems, 'permanent changes to genital tract', 'increased aggression at 8 weeks of life', 'increased prostate weight', and 'decrease antioxidant enzymes', among other problems.

In 2008, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) conducted a study which found that "BPA is at unsafe levels in one of every 10 servings of canned foods (11%) and one of every 3 cans of infant formula (33%)". Other dangerous levels were found in cans of soup (11%), pasta (33%) and vegetables (29%).

After a Chinese study, CNN ran a headline 'Study links BPA in plastics to erectile dysfunction', and noted the Food and Drug Administration's previous findings, which claimed that "the agency issued a draft assessment on the safety of BPA in food packaging, concluding that "an adequate margin of safety exists for BPA at current levels of exposure" from those sources."

Last November, Senator Bernie Sanders joined a handful of lawmakers in an attempt to ban a controversial chemical from children's food and beverage containers.

There are two bills (House and Senate versions) currently pending which would ban bisphenol A from children's food product containers, and two bills which would ban the product alltogether from food and beverage containers.

S. 753, The BPA-Free Kids Act of 2009, sponsored by Sen Schumer, Charles E. [NY], was introduced on 3/31/2009. The bill has eight cosponsors, including Senators Barbara Boxer, Russell Feingold, Al Franken, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tim Johnson, John Kerry, Jeff Merkley, and Bernard Sanders. Boxer, Kerry, Franken and Merkley joined as cosponsors in 2010. The Latest Major Action was on 3/31/2009: "Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation".

The companion House bill to S. 753 is H.R.4456, BPA-Free Kids Act of 2009, sponsored by Rep Weiner, Anthony D. [NY-9] and introduced 1/13/2010. The House version has no cosponsors. The Latest Major Action was on the day it was introduced: '1/13/2010 Referred to House committee. Status: Referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.'

An pair of unrelated bills in the House and Senate would go even further, banning bisphenol A in all food containers. . H.R.1523 : Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2009 begins "To ban the use of bisphenol A in food containers, and for other purposes". It is sponsored by Rep Markey, Edward J. [MA-7], and was introduced on 3/16/2009. It has 74 cosponsors. The Latest Major Action was on 3/17/2009: "Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Health."
The related Senate bill is S.593 Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2009. Sponsored by Diane Feinstein, Dianne, it was introduced 3/12/2009 and has 7 cosponsors, including Barbara Boxer, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tim Johnson, John Kerry, Robert Menendez, Charles Schumer, and Jeanne Shaheen. As with all the other bills, the last action took place the day it was introduced, not to be brought up again: "Latest Major Action: 3/12/2009 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions."

This makes no sense, at all. Bisphenol A is definitely hazardous.
