More than 100 people looked on, many yelling, in the parking lot of a bowling alley on the city's north side, police said. Nobody was seriously injured, but 20-year-old Mohamoud Sharif of Fargo, N.D., was treated for a superficial stab wound to his buttock. An 18-year-old man refused treatment after police saw him get hit in the head with a shovel. Also refusing treatment was a man pistol-whipped with the replica handgun. It was the latest eruption in ethnic tension in the Fargo-Moorhead area between young men from the two war-torn African countries of Sudan and Liberia, authorities said. The hostilities worry cultural leaders in those communities, including Gibson Jerue, a 43-year-old Liberian immigrant from Fargo, N.D. He told of incidents dating to 2008, including one that sent a young Liberian man assaulted in Fargo to the hospital. In the past two months, there have been more incidents, including windows smashed or other damage to Liberian and Sudanese residences, Jerue said. Now the violence has spread across the Red River to nearby Moorhead. Most, if not all, of those involved Sunday were from Fargo and had immigrated within the past decade, Moorhead Police Lt. Jim Nielsen said. Jerue said he and other Liberian elders worry that innocent older African immigrants could be walking down the street and be attacked because of the feuding. "Our concern is what is happening is not in the interest of both communities," Jerue said. Police don't know yet what caused the violence Sunday. "It seems like any time there is a large group or even for one group, the other groups seems to gather all its members and try to break it up and cause problems," said Moorhead Police Sgt. Mike Detloff. He noted that tensions between the groups broke out about two years ago at the Fargo Dome, leading to arrests. Since then, Fargo police have been trying to help the two ethnic groups coexist peacefully. The 2008 Fargo incident began over a girl, with friends joining in the hostilities that grew out of a fight between a Sudanese and a Liberian youth, said Pierre Atilio-Ekwa. He's a 40-year-old Sudanese immigrant who directs the Multicultural Parents Teachers Association in Fargo. Clashes died down after elders from both sides met with Liberian and Sudanese youths. There was peace for some time, but the hostilities resurged in the past two months, Atilio-Ekwa and Jerue said. "Maybe we need to go to Moorhead and see who those individuals are who are fighting and talk with them one-on-one and find out exactly what happened," Atilio-Ekwa said. "We need to find out the root cause why they are fighting and what are the problems." He said he hopes elders from both Sudanese and Liberian communities can meet with the young people to resolve the renewed fighting.
