In a recent column, Glenn Greenwald decries what he sees as a "merger" of journalists and the state, and I agree with his sentiments wholeheartedly.

The press would like to be God, and like God is on the side with the bigger guns.

If the press is supposed to be a watchdog over the state, then it has an inherent interest in the growth of the state.

Because it will have more to watch over. It has no guns of its own. Its power is derivative of state power.

A free people must be armed to keep the press in line, too.
