LOL at the morons that, living in Denver where it has been known to get snow and ice in winter occasionally, continue to think that 4 wheel drive and, when that fails, locking up the brakes, will help them climb what was probably a rather icy hill, or to control their descent.

When it's just below freezing the pressure of tires on the ice is just enough to liquefy a thin layer of water on the surface resulting in zero traction. Back when Krogers was closed on Sundays, I used to do physics experiments on the frozen lot in my 1300 cc Beetle until the cop cruisers would come by to wave me off the lot. No snow tires. Doughnut heaven. Those were the days.

I used to do something similar with my MG midget at night when the mall was closed. I'd get up to 30 mph or so, turn my wheel, slam on the breaks and spin wildly out of control across the parking lot. It was great fun and the midget was so small and low to the ground I never had to worry about hitting a dry patch and flipping.

Hell, if I tried that today the police would have me in Gitmo for sure.

MGs! My best bud in the old days had two MGAs. One for parts, and one for fun. Little steel eggs with a cocoon of an interior. Vent wings. A little panel in back of the seats the passenger could pop up and watch the u-joints spinning merrily around. Ignition points to fiddle with and twin carbs no one could tune just right. Zoom. They don't make 'em like that any more.

Yes, it was a great little car with a surprising amount of leg room for my 6'3" frame. It stuck to the road like the tires were glued to it.
