VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – God's mind was behind complex scientific theories such as the Big Bang, and Christians should reject the idea that the universe came into being by accident, Pope Benedict said on Thursday.

"The universe is not the result of chance, as some would want to make us believe," Benedict said on the day Christians mark the Epiphany, the day the Bible says the three kings reached the site where Jesus was born by following a star.

"Contemplating it (the universe) we are invited to read something profound into it: the wisdom of the creator, the inexhaustible creativity of God," he said in a sermon to some 10,000 people in St Peter's Basilica on the feast day.

While the pope has spoken before about evolution, he has rarely delved back in time to discuss specific concepts such as the Big Bang, which scientists believe led to the formation of the universe some 13.7 billion years ago.

Researchers at CERN, the nuclear research center in Geneva, have been smashing protons together at near the speed of light to simulate conditions that they believe brought into existence the primordial universe from which stars, planets and life on earth -- and perhaps elsewhere -- eventually emerged.

Some atheists say science can prove that God does not exist, but Benedict said that some scientific theories were "mind limiting" because "they only arrive at a certain point ... and do not manage to explain the ultimate sense of reality ..."

He said scientific theories on the origin and development of the universe and humans, while not in conflict with faith, left many questions unanswered.

"In the beauty of the world, in its mystery, in its greatness and in its rationality ... we can only let ourselves be guided toward God, creator of heaven and earth," he said.

Benedict and his predecessor John Paul have been trying to shed the Church's image of being anti-science, a label that stuck when it condemned Galileo for teaching that the earth revolves around the sun, challenging the words of the Bible.

Galileo was rehabilitated and the Church now also accepts evolution as a scientific theory and sees no reason why God could not have used a natural evolutionary process in the forming of the human species.

The Catholic Church no longer teaches creationism -- the belief that God created the world in six days as described in the Bible -- and says that the account in the book of Genesis is an allegory for the way God created the world.

But it objects to using evolution to back an atheist philosophy that denies God's existence or any divine role in creation. It also objects to using Genesis as a scientific text.

That's a great way to place the blame on others, the ones that are not the "true believers". You can then blame the "infiltrators", those wascally "Satanists", the "illuminati" etc . That way you can claim to be above it all, because you're a True Believer, whatever that means.

Agreed. But some sure do seem to understand it. They are so very sure of what happened, and they are just as sure of what will happen in the future.

They don't seem to have the ability to say "I don't know", as if their ego demands that they must claim to know it all, and it's somehow shameful to say "I don't know".

Maybe that's how I busted out of that mess. I asked too many questions.

rand and objectivism would say that matter has always existed, it only changes form.

you cannot 'un make' a rock, or whatever....you cannot cause anything to stop existing, only change forms, etc.

so all that exists has always existed. basically, its law of the conservation of energy.

as for me, i have no idea about these things. I have no idea what is in the town a few miles away....I don't need to pretend I somehow know the secrets of creation and the universe but fail to know the easy stuff.

The current physical universe came into being a little less than 14 billion years ago. It had a beginning.

However, for it to have been created, SOMETHING had to have existed before it.

If you can lump all of the universe's life force, energy, and mass into one little pin head, think of how much room there is beyond the physical universe for OTHER "pin heads" to exist.

I'd say, that which exists BEYOND that, where those "pin heads" are infinite in number, could only be termed "God" for lack of a better word.

It IS mind blowing, and beyond human comprehension.

That is why man has relied on various fables to explain it, since he will never be able to understand it for what it truly is.

In the inevitable progression of the stopped clock you have had one of your days.

Rand appears to have been strongly influenced by Nietzsche and Freud. Nietzsche was a dead end because despite the eloquent ramblings his philosophy was monodimensional i.e., it revolved around the amoral concept that what was "good" for a given individual was the only thing that mattered, and that the strong have the prerogative of making the "weak" submit. That is the basic philosophy of what we call the NWO i.e., that the mere acquisition of power confers rightness on the actions of the one who wields power. This, of course, is in total disregard for all others, and all other forms of life and existence. It is materialism taken to its logical extreme. In the end it is destructive even of the individual as no man is an Island, and no man exists in splendid isolation absent congress with his fellows. In fact such an existence would be not only a total bore, but likely drive the individual (more) insane. Witness what happens when you put someone in an isolation tank: Disorientation, followed by eventual insanity.

Following Jesus' ministry, reincarnation and the path of personal Christhood was taught for several hundred years by Christian gnostics, until their ministry was shut down by church hierarchy for human power and political gain.

In the second century AD, Origen taught on the preexistence of the soul and explained that earth was a place for man to experience free will. Those who pursue the path of personal Christhood understand that the only begotten son of God refers to the Christ consciousness, not to Jesus as a flesh and blood idol. Scriptures about other "sons of God" and about becoming a son of God can be found in both the old and new testaments regarding King David, Melchisedec and others, as well as in Jewish texts like the Book of Levi. In Galatians 4:5, Saint Paul teaches that Jesus came as the "firstborn" to "enable us to be adopted as sons." Hebrews 7:28 states "the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated forevermore." And Revelation 21:7 declares, "He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son."

In the New Testament, Jesus commends us to address God as "our Father" and tells us that those who do the will of God are his brothers and sisters. When Jesus said, "I AM the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh to the Father but by me (John 14:6), he was speaking of the Christ consciousness also referred to by Paul when he said, "Let the mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 2:5) and "we have the mind of Christ (1Cor. 2:16).

The Christ consciousness is the way, the truth and the life that saves us from our human ignorance and separation from God. Souls become immortal when they fulfill this consciousness and reunite with the presence of the I AM THAT I AM revealed to Moses in the burning bush. This is what Jesus was referring to when he said, "whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die (John 11:26) and when he told the parable of the vine and the branches.

Verily, verily I say to you, he that believeth in me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. —John 14:12

Today, with the rediscovery of these ancient teachings and the freedom of religion secured for us by our founding fathers, we have an unparalelled opportunity to right all wrongs, to follow in the footsteps of our elder brother, master, savior and teacher, to become Christ in our own right and to ascend back to God.

the bible thumpers have no idea how the thing came to be, who put it together, what was left out, and how the whole package deal came to be.

still can't find the passage where it instructs building churches and asking self appointed god brokers to tell them what to do, believe, say, pray, act, etc.

LOL, You can look in the babble until your eyes bleed, but you won't find any instructions like that. Must have been an oversight by the authors...er, ahem, perhaps God overlooked that issue, considering that He was in charge.
