Actually, you couldn't pay me enough to live in the mid or southern part of California today.

Oh me either. I'm about as far south as I'll get. With the exception of 3.5 years in Santa Barbara, I've always lived in the north state.

I had a Pontiac Tempest with the slant six. I wish I still had it.

No you didn't. Slant 6 was a Chrysler motor never offered in Pontiacs. GM had an inline 6, but it was upright.

Yeah, that 442 was a real beast. When I realized it was really a 442 engine I thought it was even cooler at the time.

What the hell are you talking about, Eric?

4-4-2 meant 4-barrel, 4-speed, and dual exhaust.

Until '66, when it meant 400c.i., 4-barrel, and still the dual exhausts. :)

I know they had some huge engines in that era. I was never a car guy other than for looks.

Fair enough, I just feel compelled to interject factual stuff as it occurs to me.

I had to go to Arizona on business like 20 years ago, early 90's. I was entranced by all the Ford Mavericks left driving around without any rust. Almost wrote an opera!

got into an discussion about it with someone years ago who insisted that yes, it was a 442 engine. Didn't make sense to me, but again, same as now, I figured I didn't know, so he probably did.

4-4-2 was an option package on the Oldsmobile F-85/Cutlass. It was not a specific engine.

Mom & Dad had matching '66 Oldsmobiles. Mom's was a Vista Cruiser wagon with the windows in the roof, 330ci V8, 2 speed powerslide tranny, AM radio, maroon.

Dad's was a Cutlass sedan, 330ci ultra- high compression motor, crazy high, something like 16-to-1, can't remember exactly.

Neither car had A/C, Dad took 'em to the radiator shop and had that aftemarket A/C put in that hung under the dash.

Mom wrecked the wagon in '75 on the ice, Dad took his to the grave in April '76.

I forget which is which, but Olds had two Hi-Po code engines back then, W-30 and W-31. I think the W30 was the heavy-duty police package (anyone ever seen an Oldsmobile police car? Me either!) and the W-31 was almost a full-on racing engine.

Olds and Chevrolet were at a major disadvantage in '64 when DeLorean and Wangers at Pontiac sneaked the GTO onto the showrooms. 330 was supposed to be the maximum engine size allowed in that platform.

LOL that's what I should be taking. Doctor has me taking aspirin which is causing me to lose my hearing. Sigh. I guess that's better than blood clots.

sadly no. One week without taking it and I had blood clots again. I've had them twice this year. My ears were already ringing from taking generic excedrine for migraines.

All the engines seemed so simple back then.

I tuned them with a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench and a matchbook cover to set the points. I set the timing by ear.

Plenty of room to work in those bad boys too.

I could pull the engine in my 65 mustang in under an hour without ever having to get underneath the car.

I can't even imagine doing that on a new one.
